Back in the days where it was common for US aviators to fly with a WSO, it's said they grew bonds so close they could understand what the other wanted from a grunt. While Top Gun is high fiction, I think they did a wonderful job showing this bond between Maverick and Rooster. In a way, Maverick knew he needed to be there for his fallen partner's son, but also knew he wasn't the right guy for it, at least in the traditional sense. The whole story is about his failed attempts to protect Rooster by going the wrong direction, when in the end they just needed to be a team and trust the rest of their team. As corny as the story was, I think it has a great message hidden under everything.

@@Randall-ogmac I also appreciate that the Ice Man stand-in Hangman got his opportunity to be a hero. Yeah, he was an ass, but when you get to know enough well meaning heroic types, you get to know a good number of them fall into that category without meaning to. The type wants to be hot shit typically to protect their team, though there are a few bad eggs, but the bad ones seem to reveal themselves over BS. I could see the franchise continuing from Rooster and Hangman developing an unlikely friendship and living up to Maverick's legacy. We're talking fiction, but fiction is supposed to show flawed individuals coming together to be a solution greater than it's parts.
