- Abe Laboriel Jr.'s signature stick is one of the biggest in our catalog, but it doesn't feel heavy around the drums. The length and diameter give Abe the durability and huge sound he demands while an extra long taper provides a quick response off the drums and cymbals.
The man is a genius. He uses a left sided double pedal so that he can fit those extra deep toms in nice and low without any sound interference from the giant kick drum. Gobsmackingly clever
interesting that he's got drums of several different finishes. a friend who recorded a project involving abe during his Berklee tenure in 1991 said he came to the studio with similar 'mismatched' drums. he said they were gifts from Jeff Porcaro who was his drum teacher at one time.
Fuck, 4-5 times a show? Man I didn't know you could be that much of a beast.
He awesome, very intellectual yet laid back. Not to mention an UNBELIEVABLE drummer obviously.
I have for years... played the Vic Firth... METAAA *Guitar Riff* AAAAAAL!!
...Stick…
You should post just the performance. I would love to see it.
Abe is one of my faves.
Also, I would love a thinner version of this stick.
17" length, long taper, 5B diameter
The Abe Jr. - Jr. That would be awesome.
I also used to play with a kick drum on the left and a reverse double bass pedal. It was nice. The slower foot (in my case the left) got the advantage of the main pedal, and the stronger foot (right) got to work off the slave. It felt very even. Plus it looked really cool, too!
@gmorton731 I agree with that statement, but I have always found Paiste cymbals lack a certain "give" in general. Don't get me wrong, they sound great and it's all down to taste (isn't everything?) but I know of a lot more broken Paiste 2002's than Sabian AA or Avedis Zildjian cymbals.
Interesting set-up. Of course, that's why he's one of my favorite drummers. I can't wait to get my hands on his stick
Peter Erskine Ride Stick is the way to go!!!
Un des meilleurs batteurs de notre temps ,quel groove .......
Simplesmente maravilhoso Abe! Parabéns, você é talentosíssimo.
Com certeza !!!
What's wrong with the audio? The drums are fine, but his voice is all over the stereo spectrum, panning left and right as if somebody used a gate and trigger system to make the voice pan from left to right as he speaks louder or something. Weird shit, and it drives me crazy with my headphones on here...
One of the best in the history of the instrument. And also, Yapple Dapple.
that is my next stick purchase, I used to use the Vic Firth metals too, for years...and had the same problem...breaking EVERYTHING!! great vid!
Hi, been using Vic Firth for many years now. American Classic Rock . I have Paiste Signature Cymbals and 2002's. I'd like to try these sticks out. I like the length , and yes, I like the taper on these sticks, and agree with Abe that it would more stick to hit the head. I have to wonder though... If he isnt breaking cymbals as often,, how do the sticks themselves hold up? Is he knee deep in wood shavings after he plays?? Love his playing tho. Thats what brought me here. Peace
@leeyatding No, he just felt like with the 28" bass drum, his posture was suffering. This setup puts his toms much lower in order to improve his posture.
He's got a really weird setup. It's interesting. He's playing his slave pedal as his main pedal.
When you use a huge bass and deep toms, it helps you to mount your toms lower, and the dw 5000 might be even enough to keep up
Victor Dorantes The whole concept of having a drummer like Abe in Paul McCartney's band has always been a trip!! He's such a solid, heavy hitter-but his style still works with Paul because he knows exactly which songs require a lighter touch, just like he knows exactly which songs need a thunderous attack! It's almost like imagining, " Instead of Ringo-what if John Bonham was the drummer for The Beatles?!" Amazing!!
Calm down, hot shot-it's only an observation and one person's opinion. Get over yourself! Even Paul himself in a couple of interviews I've seen said it was almost as if a John Bonham "style" drummer was drumming with The Beatles. Let it go.
+Drummer Man My, my, my-the great and powerful, all knowing "Drummer Man" has spoken. Sounds like someone needs to go back on his meds. I'll try this again-I'll speak s-l-o-w-l-y, and in English. It was only an "ob-ser-va-tion" and "one...per-son's...o-pin-ion." Does that work better for you? Of course Paul's voice is going to sound scratchy, now. He's in his early 70's-half wit!
+Drummer Man Dammn you're full of yourself! I'd love for you to tell me some of the mysterious techniques Bonzo used which Abe can't comprehend and/or play. I guess it was just a Coincidence, that Brian Tichy, arguably the biggest Bonham Nerd and Fan amongst known Drummers, invited Abe to play at his Bonzo Bash Events, where he killed. Ringo groovier and creative? You need to check up on your drumming knowledge Big Time. But i guess you're too busy playing the biggest Sessions in L.A. which is another thing Abe for his Life wouldn't be able to do, right? Oh wait....
He's such a beast!!!! Coolest rock'n roll drummer ever !!
I am old and thought I was over "rock worship"... But gawd I love this guy!
changing snare heads 4 times a show? I guess he WAS hitting pretty hard....holy drumsticks!
It looks like he's using Paiste two 15" 2oo2 Sound Edge bottoms, 22" and 24" 2oo2 Crashes, a 24" 2oo2 Ride, and a 24" Giant Beat.
@leeyatding He's playing the slave pedal on the right and the hi-hat on the left. He did this to help fix his posture.
Abe, Ronnie Tut says Hello. :) Nice LH motif you drop in on the snare. D. Day from Berklee. .
what type of setup of that kit/ leffty righy
I think it would be cool to try just because of the closer distance between the RT and the FT(s)
Four head changes in a show? Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieah, that'salittleouttacontrol. Glad the new sticks are improving that situation.
I think these sticks have been discontinued....no?
Gracias por su video Abe. No toca bataria pero estoy de acuerdo con todo que dices tu!
I love this guys feel *
Switching the double bass pedal was a smart idea.
definitely he's my inspiration!
I have been tried that sick out yet, but I hope soon I will
what cymbals does abe use
3 or 4 heads a show? thats fucking madness..
Was that Van Halen's "Eruption" 🤔
He's so cool.
Anybody else notice the weird stereo pan jumping thing on this video? When he is speaking it randomly jumps around from left to right.
He is Abe Laboriel. The 360 panning is a natural effect on the mics when he talks.
Nicolo Sommer False!
happens on a couple of these videos, the Thomas Lang video one is one example.
did abe just upgrade to 2 floor toms, i thought he had one in 2011
@handidrummed awesome! make so much sense! thx a lot!
Thats not h\is set up with paul mcaryney right
Anyone else find that black coating slippery? I tried Abe's sticks at a show once and it was like trying to play drums with bars of soap in a nightmare. Doesn't look like Abe uses tape on them or anything either! If I remember correctly, even stick tape doesn't stay put on them quite as well. On top of that, I'm assuming that coating's for looks, but as soon as you use them it starts to chip off and look gnarly anyway. I like the design, and it looks like it works for Abe, but what's the deal?
I hope Paul knows how lucky he is to have you drumming for him. I'm sure he does.
Im sure he does to however paul mccarthy can get any drummer in the world he wants as well i would think
How are they?
Thanks! :D
You know you use big tom sizes when you use a D12 on your rack tom.
there's a difference between a dude the size of an NFL linebacker hitting a drum and a skinny kid hitting a drum. that dude is about 270 lbs and hits like a mother. yeah, i could see how he might go through some heads playing in front of 50k people every night in stadiums all over the world. you might play with a little more intensity in that environment than in your practice room at home or in the local bar.
why? doesnt he like to have his hi hat closer?
@handidrummed he injuried?
What snare is he using
Az The Drummer DW 14" × 8" Collector's Stainless Steel
whats the advantage to have such a weird kit...i like it, but i seem kind of impratical
@spacitydrummer4JC Ha ha! I think few of us are in the position to tell Abe how to play.
Is he serious? 5 snare heads a show? He may be exaggerating just a little. He is a big guy but a pro should know how to adjust to the situation like letting up on the cymbals so you don't destroy them every time. Who played harder than Buddy Rich but he hardly ever broke a head or a cymbal. He had technique.
It's an ad of course he's gonna exaggerate things a little Lol
Buddy didn't play hard! Where did you get that impression?
bombcollective Do you ever watch his solos? Buddy Rich played pretty hard on his snare drum. He wasn't a rock drummer so he didn't pound the snare on 2&4 like this guy but he hit pretty hard.
***** I think this guy thinks it's cool to claim you can destroy heads, cymbals, sticks..He's not all that on the drumset. He's a big guy that plays big drums in a very basic way. I don't see what Paul see in his playing.
He also plays 38 songs in the setlist
Hey, don't blame Abe or the sticks, blame the guy who mic'd the drums on the tour. Abe has to play hard to get the sound pout to the last seat in the balcony, yo!
How big is that bass drum, anyone know?
DavidAoraha 28" × 20"
You know you are a big dude when a 28" bass drum looks like a 22 when you sit behind it...
4 times a show?Maybe 4 a year when I was younger
Changing his snare drum head 4-5 times a SHOW? What? WHAT?
In terms of maintaining heads? It seems I would, lol.
He misses the cymbal at 0:57
So What?
Everyone makes mistakes
It's weird how just moving the bass drum can mess with your head
what a bad ass kick drum ! 26" 12 lugs ?!
28
true, but i don't have the money to buy another double bass pedal
A. Wevoo que es hijo de Jhonny Laboriel el cantante de rock acá en México en lo 60 s
actually its a 28"
@teetomthomas Not necessarily--I played Paiste for 18 yrs before finally switching over 2 Sabian--they all lasted--if u have the right technique ANY cymbal will last
ahhhh hav wondered bout Abe's Styxxxxx~ :0
Dude, that cracked me up! Still Laughing!
2:22 - 2:32
His right cymbal lonley. :(
I bet Paiste hate him for saying he used to break SOOO many cymbals. Everybody breaks Paiste cymbals right?
his drum face >
Cymbals should and can last for years, you just have to hit them right.
@blackwash I had the same reaction, damn!
2 people aint meeeetaaaaal
Victor Dorantes Metal is the name of the stick he used to use.
@@VicFirthCompany Abes Style is definitely Somewhere between Rock N Roll, Jazz and METAAAAAAL!!!!!!!!!!!
and you where playing to 40,000 people with Paul McCartney
when your drum heads where last 6 months ?
It's a different world when the stage is "The Biggest It Will Ever Be "
Bea King the Kit? Funny Story...
You screen metal in a low voice
Justin Bieber's drummer disliked this. How sad...
Or before that, 4 or 5 times in a single show. What the fuck?
Well, i like his drumming so much. But when he is suffering from his ,,big huge gigantic'' Bassdrums, he should eventually start playing smaller drums. This Setup isn't ideal either. His back is contorted. Yeah, i know.....Imagine Abe with a 20'' or even a 18'' Bassdrum. It wouldn't be Abe. But hell, health comes first.
Sorry but if you're changing a snare head 4 or 5 times a show, you aren't playing right.
Wish he'd use that talent to praise God n not satan =(
just shut up
He doesnt play that hard....
If you are changing heads 4 or 5 times A SHOW, you need to learn how to play the drums!
Not that great. Waaaay over-rated.
