Johannes Vermeer was born in 1632 in Delft as the son of Dingenum Baltens and Reynier Jansz Vos (Jan Van der Meer or Vermeer). His father was a satin weaver and art dealer. After his death, Vermeer fell into oblivion, which is why little is known about him. Only in 1866 he was 'discovered' as an artist by the French critic Théophile Thoré-Bürger.
For example, it is not known to which painters Vermeer went into the study, but it is suspected that Leonaert Bramer and Carel Fabritius were his teachers and that he was inspired by the Utrecht caravaggists. In 1653 he became a member of the painter's guild, for which he was also the headman for several years.
