- TalkTV’s Kevin O’Sullivan is joined by Mail On Sunday columnist Peter Hitchens to discuss King Charles' recent visit to France.
The king spoke to the French senate, describing how climate change had become an "existential threat" while pleading with the UK and France to team up on the issue.
It comes after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reversed his pledges on net zero, pushing back a ban on selling new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035, dramatically slowing down plans to phase out gas boilers, and rejecting calls to regulate efficiency for homeowners.
Hitchens comments: “He’s king now, he’s not Prince of Wales so he has to stop taking controversial positions, otherwise he can’t be king for very much longer.”
The pair also address the recent news that the Prime Minister is considering axing plans for the high-speed network railway, HS2.

I have no problem with Williams Earthshot as it’s all about new initiatives to improve lives while at the same time being gentle on the planet, I don’t think anyone would have a problem with that, but when they lecture about global warming it gets political!

Apparently Sunak is thinking of abolishing inheritance tax. The monarchy NEVER pay any inheritance tax. Why?
Abolishing inheritance tax benefits rich people.
Poor people pay that tax in theory, but they pay at the nil rate, ie an inheritance tax bill of £0.00, which most of them can afford to pay without undue hardship.
If the rich no longer pay inheritance tax, then all those things funded by taxation will now be funded by all the other taxes, which do not include a nil rate band for lower earners.

Why should he enjoy unparalleled ability to voice his beliefs, when no one else has the influence our king, or when he was prince of wales? Charles has caused great harm to the country with his “activism” over the past 45 years. I believe him to be the reason we have such choir like influence in particular. I DO wonder if he’s aware the green hysteria he promotes can only lead to feudalism and serfdom for the country. The poverty that is actively pursued with this cult can only end with utter and total poverty.
Extinction Rebellion were treated to a right royal welcome here in Joburg, when they appeared on the doorstep of a bank to spread their usual mayhem. The over-zealous security staff "accidentally" dropped one of them on his head, and "inadvertently" manhandled a climate-hysteric jornalist reporting on the scene. The security staff have been sent for "retraining", so Extinction Rebellion now have carte blanche, but they must remember to wear their "PRESS" armbands to throw the opposition into confusion.

When you are one of the richest men in the world it must be nice to support the green policies that you can afford to implement using tax payers money when those very policies are impoverishing the very tax payers who are paying for you. As a pensioner who has worked all my life and loved and respected his mother I for one will quickly run out of patience with her son if I have another winter of freezing in my own home because I can’t afford to pay to heat it because of green taxes.
His politics have made me turn away from the monarchy, I’d be happy to turn his land and wealth over to the State give him a pension and let them all go off to the sunset.

The more I see of Peter Hitchens, the more it becomes clear he’s just an angry old man.
Does his view on high speed rail sort of make sense, sure. But does his view on the king not being able to have any controversial views or share ideas of their own just shows he has no idea what people connect with when it comes to leaders.
People connect with leaders who they feel are being genuine and authentic, not those who have clearly been media trained.

Fifteen or so years ago there was a development project for a possibly fairly major government procurement and when I happened to run across one of those undertaking the work I mentioned that a lot of the basic physical measurements had actually been done in 1912-13 but that the arrival of the 1914-18 war had put a stop to it ....... Peter and Kevin are both wrong on HS2. The new railway has nothing to do with quicker journey times, that is not important, ... what is important is the need to increase rail capacity between north and south. The current system is at full capacity and if you want to increase capacity you MUST build a new line. If you try to just improve the existing line you have to drastically reduce existing capacity whilst the work is being done. That is not an option. The real scandal has nothing to do with journey times. The real scandal will be another betrayal of the north by the London based myopic establishment if the northern leg is cancelled. Both Kevin and Peter seem happy to be members of this betrayal!!!
Peter addressed the issue of capacity if you had bothered to listen.
I did bother to listen, Peter made some useful comments about reopening old lines. But I don't think the old Great Central would be feasible as a link to Manchester/Leeds and it would still be expensive... lots of bridges/tunnels would still need to be upgraded.

Peter Hitchens is hardly a media whore. And he never claimed she was innocent. He merely highlighted that there appears to be issues with evidence and court case, and that perhaps it should be looked at again.
