My late mum and I met Crossroads stars Jane Rossington, Tony Adams, Edward Clayton, Janet Hargreaves and David Garfield at Birmingham NEC Comicon in 2011. They were all really friendly and a pleasure to meet. Very down to earth. Mum had signed pics of all of them. She was a big fan of Crossroads. I wrote to Noele Gordon in 1983 and we got a signed letter pic and a lovely letter from her. The Crossroads them tune takes me back to my childhood in the late 60s and the 70s.
I’m 64+ and will always love that theme tune with its harp and piano sequences, so pleased to been able to watch some episodes on RUclips, and to hear this classic by Tony Hatch again 👌🇬🇧.
I used to hear this tune every evening when settling in after school. Although I never really liked the tune, these days it brings back happy memories when my mother was alive, as she was an avid watcher of the show. R.I.P. Mum. Oh, and the cast of the show who are no longer with us.
The Crossroads Bar was a crappy, tiny thing in the corner of the reception. It only had two chairs. It was like the bars our neighbours had in their front rooms, with a padded front and a glass shelf.
Crossroads brings back memories althoiugh we in new zealand never seen the earlier years as that never played only from 1985 and them the last in 1988 but we were two years behind so saw that in 1990 but we got the new version and was 6 months behind and had seen all those episodes.
I remember when Paul McCartney done it too, I thought it sounded really cool so It was one of the first songs I taught myself on my electric guitar. Everyone loves it.
In our house, as soon as you heard this them tune start it was cue a to turn the TV over, unfortunately in those days there was only another 2 channels to pick from. My kids laugh when I tell them we only had BBC1, BBC2 and ITV to watch, they laugh even more when I tell them it was my job to turn the telly over.
And now I don't watch telly, when I go see relatives and they've got that crap on... Adverts, freeview channels with some fat bloke buying cars bodging and flogging them, more adverts again, 'news'...... Utter crap!
Great stuff, great theme for a show, unfairly knocked as the DVD sales have proved.Shame no clips of Amy Turtle,Miss Luke or Benny.Love Miss Diane staggering into reception, half cut.lol
Nice to see the credits in full without being spoken over to advertise the next or some other upcoming programme or squeezing the screen into half-size to make the writing illegible.
Story goes that Tony Hatch was a member of the Coldstream Guards band when he composed this and many other great theme tunes. Soon, still a young musician he was driving a Rolls Royce to work. The director of Music was furious and banned him from parking in the barracks,Duke of York barracks on the Kings Road!!
There were at least two versions of the Crossroads Theme with the Tony Hatch Orchestra - this, I think, is the later one. The original (and perhaps better, that's a personal preference) dates from 1964 and is on the reverse side of 'Goodbye', the single made by the cast to mark the show's demise in 1988.
Richard Booth Richard, how can you say that...xroads is of its time....great interviews with the cast, man have you seen the story lines for Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale these days Richard, Crossroads, Theme & Style a perfect blend...
It's not quite the version used on TV which had much more "urgency". It sounds like it is being played on a clarinet or something here. The twangy guitar bits sound rougly the same, though.
@AngloAmalgamated one year later after ratings slipped they got her back for a one of episode, and tried to get her back full time, it is said that she died of a broken heart at being kicked out, as she passed away soon after this episode
I'm actually old enough to remember the original versions of this from the mid to late 70's and early 80's, and then that pants "Crossroads Motel" of the mid 80's, with the crap music.
Benny’s was the nickname we (Royal Marines) gave to Falkland Island sheep farmers in 1982 during the Falklands “war.” An official memo went out from the CO ordering everyone to stop using that epithet as it could offend the locals. So we changed the nickname to “Stills.” Still Benny’s. True story.
The chords of doom at the beginning warned You to get out before Your brain cells started dissolving.Reminds Me of hunger as My Mum would watch this crap instead of making My tea.
.. for That was then. When I was at junior school.Having completed My part of the bargain namely being incarcerated against My bwill by an oppressive regime with no respect for Human rights for over 7 hours I think I was entitled to some food. I 've been making My own tea for decades
hahaha...I'm sorry but I can just picture the scene now. I used to fight with my brother over the show (he wanted to watch Nationwide) , while our mother made supper. I too now cook on a daily basis. Best wishes to you. :))
superb theme..cant wait for the 342 blu ray disc release of the entire series, with deleted sex scenes and a really well organized 25 min fist fight between woolly bunnet wearing benny and hugh mortimer, its said the fight is up there with bruce lees fight choreography and will be in atv 3d for the fisrt time...im waiting for the limited editon boxset with free cardboard hotel lobby and crossroad winter mitts..
Which is a fantastic album, won't hear a word said against Wings... well, apart from the dodgy drug-fuelled lyrical ramblings of Jimmy McCulloch, who should've stuck to playin the guitar...
Yes, 1964. The original B&W version had more piano in thew tune. By my reckoning, this theme tune is the MK3. Good old Tony Hatch came up with some catchy tunes back then

R.I.P. Mum. Oh, and the cast of the show who are no longer with us.
same here....came home from school watched this then out to play for a couple of hrs....my mom was a fan also R.I.P. mom,
Just the same in every circumstance except I used to love the tune even then. Home from school with mum. RIP mum
Bless you and your mum, you will hold hands again, I promise xx
Oh yes me too, what happy memories, I never really liked the theme either but now I do.
That's exactly what I felt, listening to the theme tune.. missed my mum and dad and happy days when I heard it 😢
Such a memorable theme - and 15million viewers in the 70's!!
True, but we only had 3 channels. lol!!
Used to watch it at my grandmas my dad never allowed it on at home rewatching it at present on britbox oh love meg.
I’m 61 and although I never watched crossroads I remember the theme song as I think it was on most days in the week.
Same here! I look-back and enjoy the Old Music of many TV Programmes, despite me never really watching them.
5 15 Monday to Friday. Having dinner. Great memories
Nice to hear that theme again
The Crossroads Bar was a crappy, tiny thing in the corner of the reception. It only had two chairs. It was like the bars our neighbours had in their front rooms, with a padded front and a glass shelf.
i remember watching this every evening at dinner with family was a ritual part of TV life
0:14 been dying at this drum fill for so long
Paul O Grady had a Crossroads Reunion on his Sunday show, absolutely absolutely fan fantastic

I actually used to watch this, chuff me I do feel old remembering it and I'm only 34.
And now you're 48. Many catch-up Happy birthday's to you.
another old fav of mine miss diane and benny, etc
Birmingham 1970s unbelievable I lived through it.
Love this theme tune!
This was one of the first TV themes I learned to play on the keyboard years ago.
i loved crossroads great theme
Recall this after coming home from school , strangely my mum and dad's first names were Noel and Gordom.
You were lucky to have a telly.
@@1gerard47 you were lucky to have a room not to have a telly in. We lived on a brick in Yorkshire
And now I don't watch telly, when I go see relatives and they've got that crap on... Adverts, freeview channels with some fat bloke buying cars bodging and flogging them, more adverts again, 'news'...... Utter crap!
I love the music
Great stuff, great theme for a show, unfairly knocked as the DVD sales have proved.Shame no clips of Amy Turtle,Miss Luke or Benny.Love Miss Diane staggering into reception, half cut.lol
I agree it was brilliant at the time :)
Go to say though my favourite is still the old crossroads
I remember it was on the Venus & Mars Album
Nice to see the credits in full without being spoken over to advertise the next or some other upcoming programme or squeezing the screen into half-size to make the writing illegible.
Story goes that Tony Hatch was a member of the Coldstream Guards band when he composed this and many other great theme tunes. Soon, still a young musician he was driving a Rolls Royce to work. "Fwhat, Fwhere and Fwhy?
(Only makes sense if you remember Meg Mortimer)
This sounds so much like a product of its time.
💜😪💔

this was the true age of televison cowell couldnt release any that could last thirty years
Well said. Cowell's only talent is for making money. His musical credibility is zero!
Did Benny ever find his spanner?
bring back crossroads
good music without words vfor a change
Tony 'Hatchet' was the Simon Cowell of New Faces in the 1970s.
Top tune
@JacquesZupp yeah poles are amazing -how else are we supposed to keep our tents up ?
interesting the end credits did cross over no other tv prog can i remember that happening. very witty :-)
Johnny Briggs was in these credits, aka Mike Baldwin of Corrie.
oh yes, how wonderful to see and hear this. I remember how Amy Turtle used to fluff her lines regularly! And whatever happened to Benny?
Vic Flick Top session man of the 60`s played the 12 string Electric (VOX MODEL)on this recording
Should never have got rid of Meg never the same without her she was Crossroads
The sound of young Birmingham. xxx
One of those occasions when you think 'the theme tune was better than the programme'
It was the 70s, they didn't have the production values back then that they do now, hence the wooden sets and bad acting.
Richard Booth Richard, how can you say that...xroads is of its time....great interviews with the cast, man have you seen the story lines for Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale these days Richard, Crossroads, Theme & Style a perfect blend...
Richard Booth Indeed but in its heyday Crossroads was getting 17 million viewers an episode. That never happens today...
@@kevinlongman007 Cos they were hooked on the Theme Tune
I used to find this show depressing when I was a kid, same with Take The High Road.
It's not quite the version used on TV which had much more "urgency". It sounds like it is being played on a clarinet or something here. The twangy guitar bits sound rougly the same, though.
I miss ..miss Diane
Damn! The Crossroads Motel itself screams "class" and "glamour". I bet the residents eat prawn cocktails and drink Babychams *_every_* night! 😁
@AngloAmalgamated susan hanson (miss diane) recently said she`d like to do some comedy -was`nt crossroads comedy?
@AngloAmalgamated
one year later after ratings slipped they got her back for a one of episode, and tried to get her back full time, it is said that she died of a broken heart at being kicked out, as she passed away soon after this episode
So Johnny Briggs went from "Crossroads" to "Coronation Street" (where he played Mike Baldwin). Is that a step up or a step down on the career ladder?
wow....!
Totally agree bring Sue Hanson back as Miss Diane's twin!
Ah Crossroads.
Where the sets moved more than the actors.
I'd like this but it's presently at 666 likes and I love that more.
i always remember amy turtle always forgetting her lines lol
Crossroads was'nt the same when miss diane died it went downhill from 1987 onwards
Yes this is a re-recorded alternative arrangement
I'm actually old enough to remember the original versions of this from the mid to late 70's and early 80's, and then that pants "Crossroads Motel" of the mid 80's, with the crap music.
Poor old Benny
step down, Crossy was on 4 nights a week with 15m viewers!
Paul's best stuff is always when he doesn't use his voice.
True story.
LOL! Is that Kenneth Cope @ 0:55??
No.
its fair go tune for a dreary saga soap series but i prefer australian 60s soap theme for motel
I see Johnny Briggs in the credits!
Tony Hatch.
The chords of doom at the beginning warned You to get out before Your brain cells started dissolving.Reminds Me of hunger as My Mum would watch this crap instead of making My tea.
+MrPlownds26 Don't be a grump. Mums need to relax too........Make your own tea! lol
+MrPlownds26 God, the old ATV theme. bar bar, bar bar babar at the start... Had you already started your Crossroads sulk by then? hahaha :))
.. for That was then. When I was at junior school.Having completed My part of the bargain namely being incarcerated against My bwill by an oppressive regime with no respect for Human rights for over 7 hours I think I was entitled to some food. I 've been making My own tea for decades

+Steven JukesCheers Dude.
Would love to find the version with the Lyrics - Anyone know where I can find it ?
For all the wobbly sets and bad acting they got the end credits to run perfectly!
crossroads motel ,can i help you ?
Miss diane
I thought Paul McCartney and wings song?
@biobaird Yes, anything with Simon Cowell IS awful television.
Is that Kenneth Cope's younger brother coming in in a suit and ordering a room?
Johnny Briggs was in No Hiding PLace
No.
Johnny Briggs played Mike Baldwin in Coronation Street for over 20 years - he got the Corrie gig after producers saw him in Crossroads.
@wenger1972 : or possibly the acting was more wooden than the sets!!
superb theme..cant wait for the 342 blu ray disc release of the entire series, with deleted sex scenes and a really well organized 25 min fist fight between woolly bunnet wearing benny and hugh mortimer, its said the fight is up there with bruce lees fight choreography and will be in atv 3d for the fisrt time...im waiting for the limited editon boxset with free cardboard hotel lobby and crossroad winter mitts..
I be Benny. lol
show was crap, but the theme tune wasnt
It was no worse than any other soap. It was the first to run 5 times a week and that is why it seemed a bit on the cheap side.
Cheers
Where's Sandy? Where's Benny? And why did Meg always look so sad? Maybe she knew she'd never get another job after running Crossroads . . .
Which is a fantastic album, won't hear a word said against Wings... well, apart from the dodgy drug-fuelled lyrical ramblings of Jimmy McCulloch, who should've stuck to playin the guitar...
Where's Benny?
This is clips from 1983 and ten years earlier
My Mum didn't believe me when I said Ronald Allen was a bender....lol.
He wasn't he was married in real life to the actress who played his on screen wife Barbara Hunter,
xxxxx
Couldn't you have used the proper theme instead of this ersatz version?
Shoddiest sets EVER
Prisoner Cell Block H?
Um - 70s, not 80s.
+Leonora P 60s actually. Which is when Crossroads first aired.
Yes, I believe it first aired in 1964, or perhaps it was '65.
Yes, 1964. The original B&W version had more piano in thew tune. By my reckoning, this theme tune is the MK3. Good old Tony Hatch came up with some catchy tunes back then
Mit Dian
Lovely theme tune, but a bit strange
That’s not the original track. Sounds lifeless and muted, especially the oboe and guitar. Could barely hear the harp.
How did anyone ever watch this crap without vomitting??
Coronation Street,speak properly
Sandy & benny..Crap sets too. But ok in the day.
crap version i must say
