I love how after the thirda martini it was pretty much game over for sensible discussion.. just watch the cool (very cool) bartender do his magic. Lovely little film. I had two vespers in a row once and nearly burnt my house down. True story. So strong.

Beautiful little video, for a beautiful drink.

Great video! Sad that I had to do a bit of searching for a video that's not full of people disliking and raging at each recipe for it's variations from what they think is the "right" recipe. Also, I like the "Shake hard, but with elegance."

Where can I buy bergamot in london? Beefeater 24 might work really well as it's got tea as one of the botanicals...

very late to the party but Half Hitched Gin has Bergamot as a botanical

That's standard practice. Shaking gin based cocktails isn't though.

Shaking a gimlet is standard practice, your point doesn't apply to many cocktails@jackhughes7637

Note to Guardian: Having Nick Strangeway host a video on martinis is like Prince Charles giving a speech on how to drink Strongbow and smoke roll ups. But thank you for not being elitist.

Last bartender looks Japanese-trained; it's all elegant.

I don't know if he is trained by Japanese. But he uses too many japanese techniques. His shaking style also filling the shaker with full with ice so the drink is almost ice shard free. Anyway his name is Erik Lorincz and as I know he is head bartender of the american bar at savoy.

Why not explain what the "wood" is in the Lillet so we can make our own. C'mon blokes!

Neat gin is not a cocktail. Sorry, far, far too little vermouth. Cocktails are about balance which these dont have. Look in lots of other places for the real thing.
