If you want to get an impression of medieval magic, i recommend you to visit Burg Eltz near Koblenz. I visited this place a few months ago and it was really worth it.
There is actually a really interesting story about the Hornberg castle. There was was high royalty expected to come visit the castle, so the the guards of the castle were standing ready and waiting to give that high visit a royal greeting with lots of thundering gun salute. And while they were waiting, somebody was approaching in the distance, so they "thought, this must be it" and gave them the salute shots. But it turned out to simply be traders. The same thing happened again and again (I think 3 times, all of the people who passed extremely surprised why they were given such a grand welcome) and when that high-nobility finally arrived, they had run all out of gun powder, so instead, they gave a welcome by mere snapping their fingers, to the offense of that so important visitor. This story is called the Hornberger Schießen.
Didn't you do one of the 'shot hiking tracks'? There's at least one in the Black Forest, where you have along the hiking track many wells with fresh and cold water. Next to the well, there's usually a little 'savings box' where you put 1€ to use one of the shot glasses on a tray next to the box. Then you can pour in one of the spirits or liquors kept cool in the well. Won't work for you (at least morally) if you don't carry change. For another weekend trip you might check the other side of the Rhine river. In the Palatinate ans Alsace region, there's a castle on nearly every hill (a bit more north). Check for Trifels, Wegelnburg, Berwartstein, Fleckenstein and the hiking trails around or connecting. Further there are on both sides of the border former WW fortresses: 'Westwall' and 'Ligne Maginot' the latter with gigantic underground forts in Lembach and Schoenenbourg. The 'Bad Dürkheim Giant Cask' and surroundings are sights around as well with the 'Hambacher Schloss' (one of the main symbols of german democracy) nearby.
The funny thing is that I grew up just about 100 miles from that area and I never went on the Hornberg castle nor the Baumwipfelpfad and suspension bridge;-) Glad you and your family is enjoying it.
Welcome to our beautiful nature in Baden - Württemberg 🌲🌲🌲 Bavaria and Baden - Württemberg are the nicest states in Germany in my opinion. Greetings from the wonderful Black Forest 🙂
When I was a child my grandma had a cuckoo clock, even though she visited with my friends and the thing went on, I was always ashamed. Today I don't know anyone who still owns something like this. Many greetings.
