Preparing for your first baby and preparing for your second baby are two are two different ball games. With you first, you think you need ALL. OF. THE. THINGS. with your second baby you’re like… yeah I still have a bunch of the stuff, and realize a) you don’t need that much stuff and b) you don't know what your baby wants until they’re here and most stuff is easy to find second hand!h

I thinks it sounds so crazy that a postpartum caretaker is something you have to think about. In the netherlands everybody gets a caretaker voor 10 days. This person does medical checks for you and the baby but also can Cook en help with the brother or sister. They clean all the things that needs to be clean (bathroom, bed, toilet etc)

I pulled up this video because I'm pregnant with my second and they're due in August. And immediately cackled because your opening line is 100% right. The first time you're worried about baby and the second time you're worried about everything else. I want to say half of my registry is actually just stuff for me- for labor and for coping afterwards. 🤦‍♀️😅

P.S. I never mentioned jealousy with my toddlers and new babies (age gaps of 20 months- 2yrs.) I encouraged them to cherish the baby and emphasized how much I appreciated them helping me with baby (like getting wipes, diapers, picking outfits, etc) They get to feel proud of their new achievements and love on baby. It turned into all of my big ones being excited about new babies and sweet sibling relationships.

I did listen to encapsulation and it truly made a huge difference but you will get judgment and side stares the doctors the whole time they called me crazy and said that it's a toxic organ in that I shouldn't ingest it. They even made a really cool blood print so it's a picture of your placenta and made a heart shape out of the umbilical cord.

The side sleeper was a life saver for me! Whenever someone asks me what's the one thing they should get, i say a side sleeper! Also most of these you can lower one side more, so that baby is on an incline, helps if you have a refluxy baby. 10/10 recommend!

The postpartum rest for 40 days is also an Indian one. I don't know about north india but where I live (kerala) we have a similar custom where someone comes home and prepares a variety of 'recovery' foods and massages mum and baby and such. There are even ayurvedic centers where mums can go for like a month and basically it's like postpartum spa lol

    100% do the placenta encapsulation.
I’m a chiro and fully support the science and sense of it. I did it with my first and felt AMaZIng from when I gave birth until pretty much when I ran out of them. This time I will stretch them out more! Definitely helped with the hormonal transition and energy and recovery and breast feeding and literally everything you’re trying to navigate after giving birth.

SNOO is great! The short legs are helpful for being able to reach in more easily from your bed, and you can use it how YOU want. We kept the motion limiter on the whole time, kept it at a pretty sensitive level, and went in to baby if it seemed like the SNOO couldn't settle him in 1-2 cycles. We are the types that we ended up co-sleeping after the SNOO and not sleep training (didn't really know this would be us, but here we are). I certainly don't think the SNOO interfered with our bonding or anything along those lines.

I would just add that if you are being induced, it can take a few days and then if you end up with a c-section you stay longer. I was in the hospital with my daughter 6 days. 3 days being induced and 3 days after my c-section. So I would pack a hospital bag accordingly.

I also was thinking all about baby the first time and for baby #2 I was more concerned with what mom needed 😂
I invested in comfortable nursing clothes, a new pump, and pumping/nursing bras. my first one I went in thinking I’d exclusively nurse and within 4 mo I was mostly pumping but not prepared for it.
Also meal service was a great idea. I didn’t even think of that. I just started making extra freezer meals (they were a lifesaver for sure). When I’d make dinner starting at 20ish weeks I’d just make two and put one in the freezer.

My 3month old starts the night in it, and then we co-sleep after that. She's regularly getting 4-6 hours chunks of sleep in it. Worth every penny. Also, when nighttime chaos happens (e.g., poop catastrophe with my older kid at 4am), I just put baby in the Snoo while I take care of things and it can swivel her right back to sleep. Or, at least be somewhat responsive to her while I have my hands full lol.

It may sound a bit hippy (but I suppose this is the place for that!) but all mammals eat their placenta after giving birth and it seems like they recover better than we do....
I had my placenta encapsulated and have heard that it really helps stabilize mood swings after birth as well as get a lot of nutrition back into the mom. I bled A LOT after giving birth yet had a very speedy recovery. I'm not saying that's 100% from the placenta but I don't know that it didn't help either!

I had my placenta encapsulated and although I have nothing to compare it to since I just had my first babe.. but I do think it has helped tremendously. I haven’t lost much hair, have had stable mood, feel pretty energized actually and just all around feeling good and connecting with my sweet babe.

I had my placenta encapsulated, but before, like 2/3 hours after I gave birth, I also ate some 😳 Yes, you read that right, I ate some. Sounds so gross, I know, but my doula who also encapsulated it made me a fruit smoothie with like a quarter sized amount in it. Couldn’t even taste it at all! But it was nice to get that hormone replacement in right away since it takes a few days for the capsules to be made. Might be worth considering if your placenta is useable!

So for me with my co sleepers I have my bed on the floor and then when a new baby comes if the toddler isn't sleeping in their own room all night I put a cot or toddler bed by my bed and they come into the room and sleep there, we can still "snuggle" by holding hands or whatever. I find this much easier than trying to put the new baby in it's own "bed". I have done this with a 20 month old, and a 30 month old, and I am a few months away from doing this with an 18 month old.
Also just a heads up after my first baby they spit up A LOT and I found out that it was because my body was so good at making milk (since it had done it before) that they were getting too much, so when they would try to nurse just for comfort they would be getting milk they didnt need so I wound up having to use a binky for a short time.

Omg no!!! I’ve been trying to find someone to come on my podcast to talk about this!
One person said when baby is here to say “hang on baby I’m playing with your sister right now” so the toddler feels validated.
Also not to force anything, someone else compared it to your husband bringing home a new wife 😵‍💫
And someone else said special toys they get to play with only during nursing times.
I also just invested in the Sakura bloom scout carrier (but honestly any carrier) I imagine that’s how I’ll be dealing with the duo most of the time. And carrying baby (and other ppl carrying baby) is great for their vestibular stimulation… not 100% sure what that does but I’ve heard good things 😂🙌

Your gyn should prescribe some pill to help with that (sometimes it's a bit of trial and error, not all pills work the same for everyone). And I was told these infections get worse with sugar, so cutting on sugar helps immensely. No sweets, no processed foods, no white bread, flour... Sucks for a couple of weeks, but afterwards you feel way better and everything regulates itself.

Yes to carrying around your baby all of the time!
From the start I've carried my now three month old around with what's basically just an immensely long piece of cloth. You wrap it around you and your baby and I can even loosen it to breastfeed while carrying him around.

May I also suggest that you have cream for hemorrhoids on hand. With my first, I ended up having that issue, ( I had no idea what that even was at the time), until I told a woman I went to church with (who took me under her wings) that my bum was itching! It was from pushing so hard she had told me. So a little tip for that. Try to remember to push like you have to go number two. Not with your stomach muscles. Use your bum and low back muscles. 😉

Due with my 6th in 3 weeks... Look into homeopathics for labor, delivery and recovery. Your comment about arnica made me stop to comment here. I take arnica (orally) and it helps SO much. I've had 3 hemorrhages, a baby that got stuck, terribly fast and brutal deliveries all to say that I've had to take Tylenol 3 (after morphine for one) with my first 3 babies. Once I found homeopathics, I've literally used nothing but them, one was my babe that got stuck and also hemorrhaged, and have had better pain management, during and after. (All 5 births have been unmedicated.) I'm super crunchy too, so I think you might appreciate homeopathics!

Its funny listening to people in my life who are so opposed to placenta encapsulation, I personally have no issues with the thought of eating my placenta, growing up on a farm knowing that every other mammal I have ever seen give birth does this doesn't make me think its weird at all. Also having a postpartum doula to mother the mother should be the standard postpartum care for all women, what a different world we would live in if women were truly nurtured in the postpartum space.

With Covid it's obviously been a little different, but the other thing to remember (depending on how far away you live from the hospital) is that you're not trapped in the hospital after you give birth. Even if you as the birthing person can't leave, your support people can go home and get things, go to the supermarket etc. You can also order things online if you forget something while you're in the hospital!

You should get someone to talk about baby brain chemicals. Like a baby crying by itself releases cortisol, but if they are being held they release endorphins even if they are still crying. Babies in group daycare release cortisol. Get an au pair instead. Much more helpful, not all that much more expensive.
