Hey, just a note to you, you didn't have to isolate the lead vocal. The multitrack to the song has leaked forever ago, which features the dry lead vocal.
I think David should make a whole video explaining the harmonic major scale, it doesnt get talked about very often and is really beautiful, and I would like to know some songs that use it.
this was great. now let's try Double Harmonic Major, Hungarian Minor and Neapolitan scales, and some modes of Mel Minor, like Dorian b2 and Mixolydian b6
Amazing video! I'm from South America and our default minor scale, in our folkloric music, is the melodic minor. So, the natural minor sounds a little "unfinished" or "unpolished" to my (but I like it anyway).
Mixolydian and Phrygian dominant sounded surprisingly nice. I actually prefer them over the original. Some other scales that might be fun to explode: 1. Aeolian #4 2. Double harmonic scale 3. Hirajoshi scale 4. Insen scale 5. Bayati maqam 6. Alphabet minor pentatonic (ABCDEA) 7. Ionian b5 8. Pelog scale 9. Overtone scale
Great breakdown of these scales, thank you. As for my amateur ears - all the major scales and the derivatives go well with the Bohemian Rhapsody. And that Locrian...I don't know..Freddie's voice is so bright in this song that this scale just sounds totally separated from the vocals.
Since you mentioned the scale commonly used in Arabic music (Phrygian Dominant), perhaps you could do a video discussing other scales (tuning systems, etc.) commonly used by other cultural regions all over the world. Eg: Classic Slavic, Middle-Eastern, North/South Asian, North/South African, as well as First Nations in Australia & North/Central/South America, etc. Often when listening to music produced on instruments unique to various cultures, a musically uneducated person may come away with the feeling of _"wrongness"_ (or thinking the instrument is out of tune), due to how these instruments are tuned for a musical heritage which may be subtly (or radically) different to the Western musical traditions we're so used to.
fun fact, there's a minor cover of Boh Rhap in RUclips. But the title says it's A#m, so forgive the semantic stumble, but the quality from what I remember is pretty good throughout
i view phrygian dominant as the phrygian equivalent to the harmonic minor scale. so like, the equivalent major scale for e phrygian dominant would be c, d, e, f, g#, a, b, c. Also, the natural minor version sounded the best, with melodic minor being a close second.
Pardon an ignorant question. I seem to remember that you had a video before where the Lydian scale was presented as Major scale with two flat notes. Starting with C Maj CBEFGAB, each of the other scale is just the same 7 notes, but with a different tonic note. Lydian is DEFGABC, which using D as the root note, means that it has F and C instead of the F# and C# in D Major. As such, Lydian is darker than Major. But in this video, you are saying Lydian is brighter than Maj scale. Again, sorry for my ignorance and confusion.
Idea: What if you played the really weird versions of Bohemian Rhapsody but then compared it to songs that are supposed to be in the scale? Show us how those scales can be applied appropriately. Especially the weird ones.
About turning a major piece into minor and viceversa: wouldn't the usage of Negative Harmony be more effective to convey the original functions of the chords and melodies within a given song? For example a ii7 - V7 - I in major would be a VII6 - iv6 - i in minor.
Really wish that instead of changing the melody to make it "work" in locrian you would have just let it be weird so it highlights just what the locrian does
Frankly, I believe it's more interest WITHOUT the Bb PEDAL TONE. One shouldn't have to shore-up the tonic by constantly repeating it. In contrast, to omit the Bb PEDAL TONE creates more vagueness and ambiguity -- thus challenging the listener to find the tonic. :)
how is nobody commenting about the amazing software? I am impressed by the accuracy and precision of the isolated tracks, and how natural the tracks sounds even when pitch shifted, great video
Yeah it's mind blowing when you stop to think about it, digital magic. The kind of thing that would've utterly astonished producers/recording engineers if it had suddenly appeared in say the late 80s and 90s, when a lot of older music was being remastered for CD release.
It's crazy. Separating stems is like automatically removing the background from a video, but the video frist went through a blender and was spit as a single one dimensional line.

harmonic minor versions of any minor scale will immediately make it more spooky especially if the scale in question is d or a minor imo, the sharpened 7th in either of these scales just makes them even more... haunting (in a good way)
Brilliant! I was hoping you would do another one of these! Here are some scale suggestions for a potential third instalment: - Lydian Dominant - Mixolydian b6 - Dorian b2 - Double Harmonic - Harmonic Minor Inverse (Mixolydian b2) - Ultraphrygian - Pentatonic (would be fun to hear a song fully pentatonic in both melody and harmony) - Octatonic/Diminished - Whole Tone These are some of my favourite videos of yours, keep up the quality content!
Octatonic and whole tone would be hard as they have different number of notes, but I'd be interested to see how he did it. Pentatonic would be easier as you could just move them to the note a half step away.
Brilliant! I was hoping you were going to make another one of these! It's crazy to me as someone with almost no music theory knowledge how much of a change it was by going from major to Lydian. As you showed, it's only one change, but it made a huge difference. To me, the sound of the passage was almost nails on a chalkboard bad when moved to Lydian. The Harmonic Major also did something similar.
Then check out _Yesterday_ - the scale is D melodic minor; although the chords are loosely grouped around F tonic which makes the scale harder to identify.
The key of B-flat having a flattened 6 just sounds so good in bohemian rhapsody. That two note G-flat octave into the two note F octave being played is just... beautiful.
Minor seconds in octaves sound so heartbreaking. It fits the tone I think- reminds me of Schubert’s Gute Nacht, which does the same thing. I completely agree with you ❤
The natural minor version is really interesting, it sounds more suitable to the lyrics, or so I feel. I wonder how the entire song would sound in that scale.

That harmonic/melodic minor pair has some really great chords.

Harmonic minor is by far my favorite. That "awkward" note drop I actually just flat out love

the harmonic major one was wild. the Cdim - F - Bb cadence sounded SO much like it was gonna resolve to Bbm

Melodic minor was my favorite. Amazing software!
I keep coming back just for that Lydian C Am Bb ❤

Small mistake at 7:32, for some reason the notes played are E-natural G-flat, rather than the notated E-flat G-natural.
What an extraordinary demonstration! Fantastic! But when it changes pitch what does the software do with the harmonics?
The harmonic minor section piano sounds like Angelo Badalamenti.

Curious that you did not flat the A in the left hand of the opening measure in the mixolydian example.

The only thing I need to know about the Locrian scale is that Doom E1M1 uses it. It's the "badass scale". Nuff said.
