Absolutely not! Not even close to the ticket window of the ballpark! The lack of mental illness help that these Amish communities “rebuke” or claim can be “prayed” away, using strange concoctions or chiropractic care for a cure for mental illness is ludicrous.

Not at all. I’m a Christian. About 20 years ago I was struggling with a deep depression. My church supported me 100%. They were a blessing. I also truly believe that’s why God made counselors and such. So we can truly take care of each other.
And it’s just not the Amish. There are other religions and off-shoots of varying religions that shun traditional mental health professionals. Very sad. They have a lot to answer for

When my late life partner was in her teens, she was in the hospital for treatment of kidney disease, her room mate was an Amish girl from Indiana, who was being treated for the same condition, the doctors told her parents that dialysis was the only treatment that would save her life, the parents replied that they would have to consult their community elders and their bishop before giving consent for her treatment, late the next day the elders arrived with the bishop in tow and they gathered around the girls bed, the doctors were called in, and the bishop informed them that permission to treat her was denied on religious grounds, a few days later the girl died. The incident tainted my ladies opinion of the Amish, for the rest of her life.

At death it was no longer there job to judge him or his actions. That was now gods job. Nobody says it makes sense to most people. It doesn't. I would like to see a branch of mental health care workers assigned to keeping tabs (checking in) on anyone with a schizophrenia diagnosis. These professionals would be tasked with frequent check ins and interviews with the person and anyone who lives with or works with them. It would cost but I believe it's worth it.

Also, there are so many schizophrenics that are homeless, due to various reasons, but one being that they've gone off their meds and a structured life has become unmanageable. It would be extremely difficult to "keep tabs" on the wandering homeless.

Nice thought, but isn't always effective. It is a very good thought, though. The day before I was stabbed, I had asked the County Behaviora Health office if my neighbor was dangerous. Long story of why we were living in close proximity. They sent the "mobil unit"out to check on him, and he stabbed me the next day! Would have likely bled to death in the street, if my neighbors hadn't helped me quick.

Severed my brachial artery, I was never informed if he was taking his medicine, or not. No one would have divulged that. Like Chris said, some people are not dangerous. Horrible condition to live with, and very difficult to manage. It can be brought on by drug use, or abuse, whatever you want to call it. I've never figured out if a person has to have a proclivity for the for the disease (?) don't know if is considered a disease, or if anyone can become schizophrenic from drug abuse. You are right. They deal with each other in their own way. The power of the Amish community is very real. On the outside it looks so peaceful and serene, but it isn't always that way. Most victims have no idea how to get the help they need. We tend to romanticize the Amish lifestyle and we tend to hold them to a higher standard. They are people just like the rest of us and there are good and bad in every society. I hope that things will change so that the victims don't have to fear the reaction from the community.

I live on the outskirts of a large Amish community, and I interact with many of them on a very regular basis. They have a general store/farming and livestock equipment. I went in today with a friend. Near the children's toy isle was an Amish mother with two young children. She said good morning to me, which doesn't happen from Amish women. I went and sat down on a bench near the front desk. The older Amish gentlemen were cheerful and pleasant. Next I see the Amish women and her children go into the office behind the desk. A young order man, her husband, went into the office and slapped her silly, in public, because the younger child fussed for about 30 seconds. Her husband did not speak to any of the English except the almost naked junkie that walked in and chatted him up for some meth that he was holding. Shit is just simply accepted in many Amish communities, and there isn't much that anyone can do about it. It's strange, they are so unbelievably religious and tied to their God, yet they have no churches.

I live in the heart of Amish country, Lancaster, PA, and this is no surprise. Murder is not common within the community but domestic violence is not uncommon. The problem is that women who go outside of the community are shunned and even things like the abuse of children are dealt with internally. The Amish use a lot of holistic treatments and it's often not enough. So, I'm not at all surprised by this.

My dad was raised Amish and both his parents had a mental break down when he was a small child. They spent some time in the mental hospital but got better and worked extremely hard to purchase their own farm. Then when my dad was a young man, his dad committed suicide by hanging. They left the Amish church and moved to Arkansas where his oldest brother had a mental breakdown in his 40s. He was a gentle and kind man but turned into a completely different person during that time. After getting out of the mental hospital he also took his own life by hanging.

Oh my, I know what that is like. The first one that I ever read was "Cry For War" I'm telling you, that book chilled me and still does! I'll have to check out "Abandoned Prayers".

Imagine willingly hooking up with a dude in a barn after killing his wife. Especially one with a tagline like “Who wants to do the Amish guy”?
    Geez, lady.

How could Eli drop out in the eighth grade when that's the highest grade level in Amish schools?

That is what is wrong with the Amish they try to control their members by keeping them poorly educated of the outside world. 😮😢

Omg, I LOVE these Recap Podcasts from you guys!! I love the banter that you have together, it's amazing! On one of the last ones you did Amy said that she remembers a few people from high school that if they ever did a crime she'd be like "I knew it!" LOL!! I can totally relate to that, lol! 😂 I worked with a guy like that and all my coworkers and I had a "safeword" that if we ever noticed him come in and pull something suspicious out of his pockets or walk in with the stereotypical trenchcoat one day, we would yell out the safeword and run! We were that afraid of him. I wonder if anyone else ever did something like that because they were that uneasy about someone?.....
