- Lebanese table grapes are known worldwide for their quality, flavor, and superior taste. According to 2014 statistics, Lebanon is ranked 52nd worldwide, producing 80,588 tons of table grapes annually. Lebanon exports at least 24% of its total production. This sector is dominated by small and medium sized farms found mainly in northern and central regions of the Bekaa Valley.
LIVCD worked with Lebanese table grapes value chain actors to:
• Assist producers to enter high value markets through better understanding of market requirements and specifications.
• Improve agricultural practices with training to upgrade the skills of small and medium scale farmers and ensure compliance with good production practices.
• Upgrade production, harvest and post-harvest practices by creating demonstration plots for new varieties enhanced with technical assistance to farmers that have new and existing grape orchards.
• Improve aggregation and storage through technical assistance to increase the efficiency and capacity of post-harvest facilities. This will in turn improve grape quality and expand sales.
A Functional Value Chain:
LIVCD worked in the grape value chain to overcome constraints experienced by actors at multiple levels of the value chain: marketing, aggregation, processing and production. The overall goal of the upgrading strategy was to achieve a competitive and functional table grape value chain, measured by increased sales of Lebanese grapes to high value markets, number of jobs supported, integration of the MSMEs integrated into the value chain, and development of sustainable linkages between farmers, aggregators/exporters, processors, service providers and input suppliers.
Thanks to the LIVCD interventions:
• 1,162 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) including farmers and other organizations located all over Lebanon received business development services.
• More than 255 MSMEs received assistance and training on ways to apply for and access financial services and loans.
• $4.2 million in loans were disbursed to support MSMEs as a result of technical assistance.
• 185 females have been assisted by LIVCD to improve existing businesses and help in establishing new businesses.
• 876 farmers and other value chain actors were supported to apply improved technologies, improved harvesting and post harvesting techniques, and improved handling and storage techniques.
• 258 MSMEs have benefitted from business linkages established by LIVCD.
• 491 jobs were impacted.
• 993 individuals and farmers received training on Good Agricultural Practices GAP.
