Even after hundreds of listens, the impact and sheer rawness of this song never fails me. I go back to this song whenever I feel overwhelmed / overstimulated by constant tasks, distractions, and challenges that desensitize me and disconnect me from life and the core of my being. Not only do the lyrics make me feel solidarity with the struggles and suffering of humanity, but the drive and pulsing rage in the music is incredibly empowering. The breakdown at 3:31 gives me an almost indescribable feeling-it makes me feel like the deepest and truest part of my being can overcome and outlast everything... it makes me feel infinite. One of my favorite moments in music ever. Side note: I was just listening now as it was raining, and right as aforementioned breakdown happened, the clouds opened up and the sun came through amidst the rain... pretty poetic moment.
In October 1996 I was 16 and played stinkfist for my father. He snickered and said it sounded like there equipment was broken. Then he took me to an opera . Now in 2022 my kids and I JAM Tool .
2:47 For so long I had no idea Maynard was speaking *Portuguese* during the bridge. Pretty offensive, too. RUclips automatically deleted my comment when I translated it.
I always loved how this mix never really stereo spreads the big double tracked guitars till the very last chorus. Most modern rock records do that right from the jump to try and grab your attention but this has to restraint to save it till it really kicks. (Of course there's double tracked stereo throughout, it just doesn't REALLY open up till 4:34)
This song is about the basic human condition, our constant need to search and find pleasure amongst pain, to find “more”. It’s one of the most important songs ever written, and to think so many people think it’s about fisting. or drugs makes me sad. They are metaphors used by Keenan to portray something much more visceral: the reason humans live in a perpetual state of wanting and dissatisfaction.
True. He has for a few years now... he did as a Pittsburgh Pirate and I was happy to hear he kept it as a Los Angeles Dodger. world series mvp < uses Tool song for walk up music. dude earned my respect!
I started listening to Tool back in high school, it's been 30 years now and they're still my favorite band. Nothing like playing their music over the PA system and crank the volume up to 12.
this band helped me to know that the human being has a high potential for change, for improvement, and that we are spiritual beings capable of awakening our inner god
Shrooms and lsd did that for me. But yes. I hear ya. That's what great about Tool though. A lot of people don't "get" them. Unless of course you've experimented with psychedelics. Then it's easier to relate with your "third eye" open.
Tool's songs r just like the best wine. U FEEL THEM at every time u listen. They just never get old. Great job these musicians did n still doing. Love them forever ❤
I had the privilege of hearing this one live in concert this month. It was so moving and powerful in an indoor event stadium, and having had that experience still makes it even more enjoyable just to listen to privately.
Good analogy for metal music. Harsh at first but once you get it, everything just doesn't have enough of a punch to really satisfy. almost like it's a song about itself
Saw them live in 08 and they stared with this song and just walked up and the scratchy noises in the beginning of the song didn't play they just picked up their instruments, didn't say anything to the crowd and just started jamming. Bro the crowd was like a wave, the whole place was moving, it was special.
This album will always fill me with nostalgia, I'd always love to go on car rides with my dad and listen to this album on CD during the lawsuit years, and now I can just stream it. Sleeping or sitting in a pitch black room and high while Ænima is playing just brings back nostalgia, it releases the dopamine every single time
Easily my Favorite TOOL song, what it lacks in technicality it MORE than makes up for with Raw power and Emotion. This song has made me cry/Rage several times.
As someone who recently realized I'm a chronic relapser with my struggles with booze, this song means a lot more to me than it ever used to. Making the promise to myself this time because there's no reason to just manipulate and charm my friends and family, telling them what they want to hear; it really is time to keep that shit away from me.
I know I'm a little late to the party, but what's 2 years or so? 1st, I hope you have been able to get and STAY clean, 2nd, from what I read in the comment section of the video for Sober that song has helped a lot of folks stay clean... might be something that can help you out as well!

I had a brand new Rockford fosgate system I installed in my little hatchback Toyota tercel and I tested it out using this song back in 1996. 4 competition series' in 2 different bandpass boxes. It jammed!!!
Almost a quarter century since this songs release into this world, and I can still remember exactly where I was when I first heard it. This song carries such a strong nostalgia with it for me, capable of teleporting me instantly back those many years. With vivid clarity I remember how it felt to hear it for the first time, like a siren calling me to come crash upon the rocks, and which I did without hesitation. The haunting melodies just carry me away. Like a true lover, it captivated me and has held dominion over my heart ever since. I can say with certainty that no other song has ever had quite such an effect on me. This song, this band, changed my life.
At the time this came out in 1996, there was so much good music being created and released that it completely spoiled me and my circle of friends. We thought this is how it is, this is what life is like -- constant good music. God, I couldn't have been more wrong. But even in the midst of perhaps the greatest 5-7 years in hard rock history, this song -- indeed the entire album -- stood out.
Oh....You poor sheltered thing you. Well, welcome to your life not ever being quite the same again....like opening your eyes for the very first time....that's Maynard's gift.
Unbelievable. What makes it so great is it brings you up, takes you down, and slowly accelerates, and then BOOM at the end. Like a roller coaster. NOBODY is like Tool
"Not enough, I need more, nothing seems to satisfy". I sing that line in my head every time I eat a piece of cake. Of course, this song is brilliant, right?

you are infinite my friend, we will float throughout space for eternity. rock on, man!
Well said
Love that part
61 in TEXAS & BLASTIN' this shit!
I’ll never stop loving this song.
Why would you???
This song and whole album is a masterclass in song writing. I’ve listened to this album for 25 years and these songs still never fail to move me.
My brother bought me this album for Christmas back in either 97/98 and I haven't stopped being a Tool fan since!!
In October 1996 I was 16 and played stinkfist for my father. He snickered and said it sounded like there equipment was broken. Then he took me to an opera . Now in 2022 my kids and I JAM Tool .
Never happened.
I was born on October 1996😂
My alarm music in highschool every morning when I lived in florida...
"This next one is a love song.... but really... aren't they all?" - MJK
This was otherworldly when I was a kid and still holds true to this day…
The catharsis... you can literally feel your soul shedding baggage when this song peaks
A classic I'll listen to until the end of my days
This song is about the basic human condition, our constant need to search and find pleasure amongst pain, to find “more”.
It’s one of the most important songs ever written, and to think so many people think it’s about fisting. or drugs makes me sad. They are metaphors used by Keenan to portray something much more visceral: the reason humans live in a perpetual state of wanting and dissatisfaction.
The first Tool song I listened to.
Fun fact:
David Freese of the Dodgers uses this as his walk up song to the plate 🤘
True. He has for a few years now... he did as a Pittsburgh Pirate and I was happy to hear he kept it as a Los Angeles Dodger. world series mvp < uses Tool song for walk up music. dude earned my respect!
That's fkn awesome 💯🤘
Pretty sure he used it here in STL, lots of tool fans here.
I don’t play Tool all the time. But when I do, my neighbors also hear it
This album is 27 years old today. Badass album front to back. Going to see these guys live in Nashville in January, can’t fuckin wait either!!!
This album is a masterpiece! Wish I could write even 1/10 of a song like this!
As a former addict, this song hits differently!
It also helped me realize how serious it was.
Thank you for that TOOL ❤
There are no former addicts. You are on if you are one. There’s using addicts and Clean addicts.
I Saw tool 2 nights ago in Canada. They closed with this song. It was incredible.
I was there!
When I couldn’t find the strength I needed in myself, I found it in this album.
I started listening to Tool back in high school, it's been 30 years now and they're still my favorite band. Nothing like playing their music over the PA system and crank the volume up to 12.
I haven't heard some of this music for nearly a decade. Thank you!
this band helped me to know that the human being has a high potential for change, for improvement, and that we are spiritual beings capable of awakening our inner god
What are you, fucking gay?
@@djfrost5420 Yes he is, and you should be too.
@James Buchanan Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean everyone else is pretentious.
Shrooms and lsd did that for me.
But yes. I hear ya. That's what great about Tool though. A lot of people don't "get" them. Unless of course you've experimented with psychedelics. Then it's easier to relate with your "third eye" open.
Nicely put
I like how the TOOL is in capital letters. It matches the band's energy so well. LOUD and BOLD
It looks so much cooler when you type it as well
@@speedking7224 😂☺️feeling the VIBE it would be even cooler if we could type the font here 😫
Tool's songs r just like the best wine. U FEEL THEM at every time u listen. They just never get old. Great job these musicians did n still doing. Love them forever ❤
First tool song i ever heard, Now the new album awaits. Haven't been this exited for music in years.
Welcome to the family
You hear their whole discography yet?
I will never get tired of this goddamn song. It’s perfect and absolutely captivating from start to finish.
3:58 - “THE SIMPSONS TOLD YOU EVERYTHING”
LMAO
Even they knew that the simpsons predicted everthing
That South Park episode. Simpsons did it...😂😂😂
I’ve loved this song ever since I first heard it
I had the privilege of hearing this one live in concert this month. It was so moving and powerful in an indoor event stadium, and having had that experience still makes it even more enjoyable just to listen to privately.
FINALLY! I can listen to tool anywhere! And so will everyone around me!!!!!
U got it like that, right on
The best part is for sure 3:52 🔥🔥
this really is a good year for metal
The G Man Gabe you do know this isn’t new right lol
Not sure if I would call tool metal. Rock for sure though.
@@roejogan7658 ye but they have a new album and official channel now
@@ChronicBreakdown its considered alternative/prog metal but some of it's more like rock
The G Man Gabe I would consider they’re first two albums progressive grunge almost, but from this album on they evolved into a simply a prog band imo
4:21 the most savage muted strings ever recorded
That’s the climax the whole song is building up to. Pure release and perfection.
Good analogy for metal music. Harsh at first but once you get it, everything just doesn't have enough of a punch to really satisfy.
almost like it's a song about itself
Maynard is a freakin genius. I feel every word
Sleeping or sitting in a pitch black room and high while Ænima is playing just brings back nostalgia, it releases the dopamine every single time
This album is so good i wish it could be broadcasted inside my brain
Easily my Favorite TOOL song, what it lacks in technicality it MORE than makes up for with Raw power and Emotion. This song has made me cry/Rage several times.
I remember when I was in the 8th grade and the highschool band came to our school and played this. It was so epic because Tool is so badass!
As someone who recently realized I'm a chronic relapser with my struggles with booze, this song means a lot more to me than it ever used to. Making the promise to myself this time because there's no reason to just manipulate and charm my friends and family, telling them what they want to hear; it really is time to keep that shit away from me.
I hope that's going well for you man
Unfortunately I can relate to this comment a little too much. Hope you're doing well man.
I know I'm a little late to the party, but what's 2 years or so? 1st, I hope you have been able to get and STAY clean, 2nd, from what I read in the comment section of the video for Sober that song has helped a lot of folks stay clean... might be something that can help you out as well!
i feel so lucky to find this by my own on the internet. No one recommended me this...and this is the best sensation in the whole world :3
Life will never be the same
Mr. Douglas, I'm so with you. I am 50 myself and I WILL NEVER EVER GIVE IN TO THIS WORLD AND WHAT IT HAS TO THROW AT ME NEVER. God bless you and the one's you hold dear.
Shalom from Oklahoma USA, smoking some of my killer farm grown kind buds I grow myself and still jamming the Tool nightly at 56. Enjoying the view of the Ozark mountains and a wonderful sunset, life is beautiful indeed if your in the right state
4:02 the drum part gets me every time I hear it
That bass line though! 🤘😵😵💫
Ikr
I had a brand new Rockford fosgate system I installed in my little hatchback Toyota tercel and I tested it out using this song back in 1996. 4 competition series' in 2 different bandpass boxes. It jammed!!!
Everytime I listen to tool it feels like I’m hearing tool for the first time again. Just awesome.
This song NEVER gets old!!
Possibly one of the best songs ever written.
Tool is the 1 band I can jam to, rage to, and fall asleep listening to. ❤️
25 years ago this was the first tool song I ever heard. Haven’t heard a better band since.
I'm 26 I feel 62 drinking water listening to Tool alone at 3 am
Heard this on the radio back in fall 96' and was hooked! Loved the duel voices, unified sound and artwork...
I am 26 and this is my first time listening to them. What a intro damn. I like it to be honest it slaps.
keep at it compadre
Don't stop it becomes a lifestyle and true peace
Oh....You poor sheltered thing you. Well, welcome to your life not ever being quite the same again....like opening your eyes for the very first time....that's Maynard's gift.
@@venusrising9129 I'm 27 now and I still enjoy their songs tbh. Specially in my workouts I'll rep atleast 1 tool song lol.
@@venusrising9129I love tool and all, but this is why some people say tool fans are insufferable. I mean, I partially agree, but eh 🤷
71 and still listening to Tool at high volume
Unbelievable. What makes it so great is it brings you up, takes you down, and slowly accelerates, and then BOOM at the end. Like a roller coaster. NOBODY is like Tool
Tool is so relaxing to me. I can have a hard day, then come home and crank my headphones. Everything else seems irrelevant to me then. I went to a Tool concert a month ago.... It was Fu©king Brilliant, they played Stinkfist as the last song. Peace
Tool use Internet Explorer to upload this song.
This joke, underrated.
@HumanoSiniestro Thanks.
nah fam, they're anti-establishment, they used Netscape
Haha
Hi I don't get the joke please somebody explain to me thank you
"Not enough, I need more, nothing seems to satisfy". I sing that line in my head every time I eat a piece of cake. Of course, this song is brilliant, right?
I’ll never forget my non metal friends’ first impression of this song; *”sounds like the intro to a horror flick”*
This song will never get old. Seeing the guys in a few days. God tier right here 🤘🔥
This has been my warm up everytime I go to practice for the past 12 years, and after a thousand plus times playing this song, it still gives me chills. The buildup during the break leaves me breathless
GREATEST. BAND. ON. THE. PLANET.
