I plan on moving to Manzanillo because it's beautiful, smallish and it's not a tourist trap. It has at least one of everything. There are no timeshare hustlers harassing you there or others that pretend to know you because of your all inclusive wrist band and want to sell you something. The only other place I'd consider is Campeche because it reminds me of the Italian Adriatic coast with few people and splendid empty beaches. Basically, I don't care for expats and their communities and have had way better times hanging with the locals. Nice video you posted with generally honest opinions. Much appreciated.
Well done, Alex. Rarely do people ever mention the "downsides" of living in a place in Mexico. Some people are not affected by anything and when they talk about where they live, are not completely honest with others about real downsides to their chosen city. This video is real and is important for people considering moving to Mexico. The younger a person is, the less impact many "problems" will impact them. However, many moving to Mexico are much older and many retired, so they will be affected by these "downsides".
I am so happy that this video shows the downsides of living in MX. I have struggled so much in the 7 yrs. that I have lived in MX. One thing that really brought me down, was mental health is regarded as a bad thing. One Dr. put it like this, one Is considered EVIL and don’t want to have anything to do with a person , like myself suffering from depression, anxiety and especially alcoholism.
It would be great if someone barring me would acknowledge Northern cities....Durango, Torreón, Ciudad Obregón, Culiacán, Chihuahua, Parral, San Carlos, Guaymas, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí...by only focusing on the places mentioned in this video you're literally missing more than half the country. Food, history, culture, people... all far superior in my book. I'd seriously recommend but it's almost as if there's this bizarre belief in the minds of many that nothing exists north of Guanajuato. I'd be happy to give any advice on these cities and it would be great for people to consider other options.
It's difficult to fit all the great cities in Mexico in a single video--the country has so much to offer. Glad you're out there spreading the good word about the north!
Thanks for the list of other cities to explore. I was wondering where I should start to look for places that aren’t normally mentioned in many of the videos I have watched!
David, how is the real climate year round in those cities? Many coming to Mexico think that the year round climate in those cities, though they may be beautiful and historical, are not near the "perfect climate" that places in the Center of Mexico are. What say you about that?
@@phildodd5532 Northern states can be stifling, but I've found your body adjusts. Locals usually say to stay inside between 12-4 but as someone who works online I was working then anyway. As long as you drink electrolyte drinks and stay in the shade, you're fine. I've traipsed up hills and mountains and out into the desert in 42c and been fine. For me, the minor inconvenience of heat is worth it considering the Northern food!
@@MSBAromatherapy you can start with my channel lol. Recently filmed my second long Northern Mexico travel series, and I mean actual travel not just sitting there talking about it
Really useful video. I'd add:
CDMX: expense, air polution, earthquakes
SMA: expense, highly expat centric
Guadalajara: air polution, flooding, may be higher crime
PV: very tourist/ English centric, summer heat/humidity
So glad to find someone who takes an honest look at living in Mexico! I cringe at the sanitized videos (yes, I use that term a lot) showing places as if you would live like a tourist every day of the rest of your life. Once you sell your home and relocate here, you have to "live" here. I see people leave after about three years from shear burnout of constant cultural friction. There are the hardy ones of course, but it takes a certain type of person to thrive in Mexico.
“To live in Mexico you have to be really really flexible and open-minded.” I think you have to be those things for ANY international move, not just Mexico.
Agreed!
I've been watching many of your videos, and I have found this to be the MOST helpful.
I’ve lived in Mexico City almost a year now (never did I imagine…) and another consideration is getting around: if you plan on having a car parking (next to impossible in some areas) and gridlock have to be considered. Further, a large portion of the #1 subway is shut for at least 8 months for upgrades. There are more people crammed in just the city than there are my previous state of residence (Wisconsin). Even given that, I live a charmed life here
Thanks so much for sharing your experience in Mexico City, Christopher!
So not to perpetuate stereotypes but...does Mexican cheese meet with your approval?
@@Falconlibrary Oaxacan quesillo does without question
I'm choosing Mérida for my move. I bought a house that I use as an Air bnb for now. I go every year for one month. I should be retiring in 3 years, then it will become my primary residence. It's been a journey. Viva Mexico!
So exciting! Merida is a lovely city and definitely one of the best places to live in Mexico!
Hi I'm moving to Merida in March. Very excited. I received my TR this week!
@@alexandrawesley-smith5872 NIIIIIICE! Where are you moving from? Congrats!
@@alexandrawesley-smith5872 That's so exciting. Congrats.
Great information, thank you. I'm looking at moving to Mexico and this helps me be more informed.
Thanks for having the input of other people living in other cities in Mexico .Many years ago I was a student in Mexico city and lived there for 4.5 months. It was a big ,noisy and crowded city. I was 22 and had a great time .I did travel to other cities and liked them. Another trip I took a bus from Tijunana to La Paz ,then ferry to Mazatlan.
Such a helpful video!!! Thank you so much.
Love the information. Thanks for putting it out there.
Wonderful video! I think this is very important because people have this idealistic view of what their destination will be like and are so distraught when everything on their checklist yet they don’t truly research where they’re going. Also 1st finally!
Thanks for the positive feedback, Erik! No city ANYWHERE is perfect which is why it’s so important to determine your list of must-haves and cannots before moving to Mexico 🇲🇽
So far I am most drawn to Tepoztlán because of the proximity to CDMX while still having the peace and Pueblo mágico effect and being an international spot but I also just got here so let’s see.
Thanks for a great video. Its a wonderful reminder that no city will be perfect. I have been in my current favorite city for three years. I love it, and I watch as newcomers struggle with the negatives you listed. Everybody should watch this video before moving to Mexico. I really liked listening to so many points of view. One more thing: I just thanked my less-than-perfect husband for being on this adventure with me. I need that reminder too.
Thanks for watching, Terry!
Very useful information . 💗
I really love this channel, thank you Brunette!!
Hi Alex. You did a great video Showing the people reactions of Mexico , I know not too many people would like mexico like you. But anyway. Thank you very much for supporting my country, I really apprecciate that. Godbless you.
Excellent "candid" video ! ❤
Thanks so much for this very helpful video on the negatives of each place. Something you don’t always heAR…I would love to see you do a comparison vlog on smaller cities/villages in Mexico like Pátzcuaro, Lake Chapala, Bacalar, Huatulco, San Cristóbal de las Casas. I think that would be VERY interesting. I love all these places and think others would too…
Very informative video Alex!! Thank you! I haven’t seen any of your vids in a bit so I’m glad to have them in my feed again. Oh we’ve been to St. Joes twice recently, love, love, love it!!
Thanks for watching, Charlie! I hope you're having a good summer 🥰
Brilliant! This video is a keeper. Many thanks for putting it together
Glad you found it helpful!
Thanks a million for this info, Alex, this is not the easiest info to come by
Loved this video! I live in Playa del Carmen and love most things about life here 🏖️ It wouldn't be the right place for people who want to be totally immersed in Spanish (so many toursits/foreigners!), no colonial architecture, and is more expensive than other cities. That said, love walking everywhere, laidback beach vibes and being close to so many amazing outdoor attractions!
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on Playa, Jordan!
I have been wanting to move to playa for quite some time now. I would love to connect with you via insta or whatsapp. Would you be willing?
This is great information
Refreshing video for a change.
More videos like this please! So many places to choose from and knowing the cons is so helpful.
What other cities in Mexico are you interested in hearing about, Lindylee?
I loved this video. Such a nice alternative to the typical 'living in Mexico' videos!
great video!
I enjoyed extensive travel throughout Mexico. I enjoyed many areas and try to visit out of the way places, too. I sort of prefer places with an expat population in Mexico, because there's a support system for the expats and they are a respected part of the community and it's nice to have some friends that are fluent in your native language, too.
You did a great job in this video! Good info and very engaging.
Glad it was helpful!
Coming to Mexico for the first time soon! I’m working on my Spanish daily!
Excellent vlog, very informative and of great assistance to me personally. Thank you
So glad you found it helpful, Maria!
Would love to see a video or two on Mexico City! I really enjoy your videos and end up watching even if it’s not somewhere I’m planning on going in the near future:)
I have this vlog about Mexico City: ruclips.net/video/UyIj4eb9dBw/видео.html but, I want to go back and make more videos! Is there anything you're curious about regarding CDMX?
This was very helpful, thank you! 💜
Glad it was helpful!
Very, very helpful- thanks 😊
Fantastic video!!
A lot of preparation happened here.
I’m still drawn to queretaro. I’m not sure why I never considered air quality. I mean, it makes sense being it’s a city.
The dryness, I’m not sure if I would like it or not.
I’ve lived in Florida most of my life, so humidity is like an annoying relative, and summer thunderstorm sinus headaches are real.
I guess I would be trading one sinus condition for another. Lol.
I’m so glad I could point out something you hadn’t considered! I’m glad you found the video helpful & please let me know if you have any questions 🤓🇲🇽
You make the best videos! I'd happily live in any of these cities
Loved this video! Travelling throughout Mexico for two months this fall to help discover where I’d like to be longer term. Nervous about the noise in Mexico City as I get really overstimulated easily so I might end up cutting my time short.
Thanks for the insight on so many different places!
I’m glad you found this video helpful, Lauren! Wishing you all the best for your time in Mexico 🇲🇽
It's really so important to create a nuanced appreciation for the variety of potential places to live in Mexico. This video was a great step in that direction. I loved that you polled people to be honest about the downsides of each city. Personally, I am very connected to Oaxaca and this video confirmed that there would be very few places that could vie for the lifestyle I love there.
I hope many people thinking about moving to Mexico will find it helpful!
I agree Eric, it really was quite useful. Personally, I thought that some of the "cons" mentioned by some of the presenters would be "pros" for me. And it confirmed some of my impressions--eg that I might not be able to live in Guadalajara although I would frequently visit my beloved host family there.
Alex gotta say I am missing you on my Saturday morning Mexico fix. You have been a great source of information the last year and a half. We are one month away from retiring in Mexico. Just wanted to pass on that since I am married to a native Mexican, I come in as a tourist and we are using a facilitator and move up to a citizen because I have two Mexican children... go figure all the stress I’ve had over seeing if I qualify, I just walk in... hope you are well we will be keeping an eye out for you. Casey and Patty from Mpls
Hi Alex...Myself I loved the video, just straight forward talk not trying to sugarcoat anything. Just this is how it is here and be willing to accept a few things or it’s up to you to make your life in Mexico as comfortable as you can. Another RUclipsr says “you will either like it or accept it...or you won’t “
Glad you enjoyed it, Casey!
This was really great information that you normally don't hear. It's really good to hear the good with the bad. I suppose there is good and bad where ever you live. Just see where you fit and go from there.
Glad you found it helpful, Margie!
Morelia is absolutely amazing! I don’t know why it’s not talked about more.
Agreed, Britt!
Interesante este listado en los ojos de extranjeros .
Bienvenidos , saludos desde Guadalajara.
I would agree about PTO Vallarta. I live here currently because I'm a performer at a local Cabaret theater and have opportunities because it is full of foreign tourists. But because it's full of tourists, the prices for everything is higher, and you are always surrounded by tourists who come here to party hard. So you could say, I'm part of the problem 😔 It's somewhat uncomfortable and sad being part of the problem of a city gentrifying so fast since the the Pandemic, local ppl can't live here anymore because the prices are to high. And the city doesn't have the infrastructure to support the sudden influx. In high season it doesn't feel like a Mexican fishing village anymore, and local businesses and Government caters to the tourists. Anyway I'm grateful for my opportunities here, but wouldn't want to live here forever.
In your San Miguel section your video is the street our AirBnB is located, Del Pueblito. I think it included our host as well. We have been hear for one month and really enjoy the location. Next year we will spend a month in Queretaro.
So glad to hear you’re enjoying San Miguel 🥰 definitely one of the best places to live in Mexico!
We love your videos! We are super torn between moving to Queretaro and La Paz. We are airline folks I am a pilot my wife is a flight attendant. It really depends where get based on what we close but my quick question is Queretaro a cheaper cost of living in your option overall than La Paz? We have spent time in both and love both. I love QRO and I love La Paz. My wife’s top choice is La Paz for the smaller population and beaches. Mine is QRO for the weather and it’s more centered for us commuting we have tons of options. Would love to hear any advice you have between the two. Thanks for the amazing videos. We watch you regularly.
Hola, we’ve been in La Paz for a while, if you need any help, let me know.
Noise, air pollution are also problems-in-the-making for completely healthy people, over the years living in environments with these problems (CDMX, Puebla, etc.). Pulmonary and circulatory, cardiovascular issues much likelier. Many studies on it, e.g., street noise causing arrhytmias, etc. Need to however move more, and not having convenient car transport can be a positive to sit less and move more, and see it positively :)
Alex, This video makes me want to come find my place soon... Also Louise has the happiest face. Meaning her whole face just smiles......
Thanks for watching, JP!
Thanks for the great video. As a family with two young school-age kids, I would’ve liked to of heard a few more of the downsides or negatives in some of the cities that you featured in the video. As an example, I know there has to be more negatives to consider in places like Mexico City then just the noise. I haven’t looked through your videos yet, but perhaps you already done similar videos for each specific city?
This was great! Looking to get a visa and searching for a city is so hard
Have you narrowed it down to a few places or are you still weighing all the options? I have lots of content on my channel about getting your residency in Mexico btw 🤓
Once again, totally agree with Jenny. The noise in CDMX is almost otherworldly.
Great breakdown!
You & Jenny are always on the same page! Don’t underestimate the noise in CDMX 😅 there’s still A LOT to love about it though!
@@alex-wittman 💯 it's absolutely one of the greatest cities of the world
This is a particularly good video because it tells a major negative about each place - some things I hadn't considered before. But it makes me not want to live in any of these places - lol! It makes me appreciate where I am right now in Mexico - thanks!
0h Blonde Truther.......;0) then PLEASE let us know WHERE is your preferred place
@@rotraudsieh9475 When I made this comment we were living in the Diamante area of Acapulco which was a beautiful, clean, safe area on the beach (not far from the Princess Hotel) but we just moved to San Miguel de Allende and LOVE it here! We moved because very few people in Acapulco spoke english and we wanted to meet more expats and english speakers. Literally the only bad thing here is the cobblestone streets everywhere - where you can twist your ankle, but there are neighbourhoods close to town that have paved or slated stone roads that are safer to walk on. I think San Miguel de Allende is brilliant.
Did something you learned in this video make you rethink where you want to live in Mexico? If you're already living in Mexico, what's something people moving to your city in Mexico should know??
P.S. If you're thinking of moving to Mexico in 2022, grab your free copy of the Move to Mexico Quickstart Guide (answers to FAQs, apartment hunting tips, renting in Spanish cheat sheet & more!): backpackingbrunette.com/mexicoguide/
Regarding San Miguel de Allende where we live, two factors to consider include 1) a higher cost of living than other places in Mexico and 2) the slower pace of life. Unlike the go go go of big cities, life moves slowly here. You need to be content with being a homebody sometimes. But on the fun side, we have awesome house parties & dinner parties.
I thought I heard of one town with only like 60,000 people?!? Well, I may have to watch again. I like pueblos, but I want good stores for shopping. I am used to Soriana which maybe in most of Mexico. I am in Mexico now and the town has nice places but it is dirty as heck and potholes so big your car could get lost in them!! 😱
The page won’t open! 😢
What about towns like Tulum and Playa del Carmen which are very popular at the moment? I live in Playa myself and would love to see what you and your friends think about the Riviera Maya! 😊
Awesome video and very informative. I wonder what your top 10 "remote work" choices would be? I'm talking like 1 month - 3 month timeframes. For me, the criteria might include internet speed/reliability, affordability and availability of short term rentals, and accessibility. Just a thought.
It depends on what you're looking for in a city! Queretaro, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta & Merida would all be great options!
Excellent content
Thanks for watching, Shasa!
Hi Alex. Tried the Coco Suero, but like my Lima-Limon much better. BUT, I have never been a fan of the taste of coconut water all my life, so there is that. 😁🥥🍉🍓🍍🥑🥑🍺🍻🤠
Well Vallarta is definitely out. Mexico City was never a draw for me but I had no idea is was so loud. Merida is out but I already didn't want to go there. It's kind of too Nad about Puebla and Queretaro and the air quality. Those were go to places for me.
This is the perfect format for an informative video. Just what I needed. Still don't know where I can go that's humid, on the east coast, walkable, historic, near the ocean but not oceanfront, affordable, safe, and has an airport and modern shopping nearby. Maybe my dream location doesn't exist?
Thanks for watching, Staci! What are your thoughts on Merida?
On September 22nd, 2021, I had a fantastic local main dish called enchiladas Queretanas at Chucho El Roto. If you and your partner have not checked it out yet, go there! Very romantic as it has a outdoor patio dining area facing Plaza de Armas Queretaro.
We celebrated my mom's 60th birthday there! Such a good memory 🥰
totally validate QRO. I've been here 6 months and sooooo boring. We're thinking about relocating to another spot so thanks for this!
Great clip. May as well get some back story about different places. If all you hear is great things about a place it may disappoint when reality comes a calling.
I feel this information all very helpful...Now my second month here...I agree with all said about Guadalajara...it is my most non favorite city...yes Merida all issues of weather is true..yet the beach of Progress is good escape....I am San Miguel today...yes ...the pavement is always a challenge..lovely....
I am torn between Queretaro and Morelia. I feel historic culture a draw...Collectivos..more information how where they go would be help
Queretaro..district's I would to follow up...I turned you on to rewatch about Almos...I went to Jurquerlia..not liked it..to America
I also went to Sayaulita..a disappoint over run with tourist..nice beach
So I am unsure...weather is important...still. not sure,..less Americans...I am going back to consider my favorite so far is Coyocan
Wow, the chosen guest spent all of 20 seconds on one of the great small cities of the world, San Miguel (SMA). As a resident, I'd add about 100 factors to consider for anyone with any actual interest in living here.
Please feel free to share what you think people should know about living in San Miguel de Allende!
That was very helpful🦢🙏🏼🤍
Can you make a video for buying property or living in Playa del carmen
I want to move to Playa Del Carmen
Another caveat about Morelia: if you like colorful architecture it's not a good option. The Centro buildings are made of uniform pinkish stone. I enjoy cities with different colored buildings, like San Miguel, Guanajuato, Puebla.
Yes, the pink cantera stone is everywhere. Very colonial but not in the way people often think of Mexico. Thanks for sharing!
my mom are from Morelia is very beautiful colonial and modern city.
Informative but counters to all-I live in Merida and its hot but I grew up in Texas…also have friends in all the places mentioned-esp CDMX-the noise depends. Are where you live
What about Sayulita, Los Barriles or Spa Buena Vista?
I have lived in all three places. In Los Barriles and Spa Buenavista, there is great windsurfing and kite sailing. I dislike the whole area. The high humidity and heat have both driven me into some depression. However’ if you are a dog lover or love the ATV scene, both will have lots of space and trails. My dogs love to run free!
Sayulita has the best food, cobblestone sidewalks which can be treacherous on older folks...I did a face plant in front of the world on several occasions. If one likes the party life, major thunderstorms, the smell of weed 24/7, beaches that are filled with dog poop, one will be happy..
The surf is great, not too much to do in the small town but eat, eat eat some of the greatest food in my travels in MX. I like culture. Neither areas I lived provided either. Looking for a more rounded life with culture, empty beaches, and cheap rent. Have any suggestions?
Great video. I didn't know the air quality and Queretaro was so bad. We are considering Guadalajara and Mexico City too how does Queretaro compared to them?
Guadalajara & CDMX have the air quality you would suspect from cities their size. I think Queretaro's air quality is a bit deceiving for people who don't realize how much industry is here.
i have a complaint, not enough content 🤣🤣!
Is there a city in particular you’d like to hear more about?
In these list is not found Cancún, Aguas Calientes ní Campeche this estates are wonderfull !
Saludos hermosa mujer brunette
We are super interested in the state of Puebla. Hope to visit this September.
Ann Woodward, my friend who shared her thoughts in this video, said Puebla is a great state for off the beaten track adventures!
@@alex-wittman That would be us 😁
How about Villahermosa, great videos Alex 👍
I haven't spent any time there! Is it somewhere you've spent time or somewhere you're interested in??
The current Baja Sur water shortage is a concern as well.
There was husband & wife pair of expat vloggers who moved to Oaxaca for awhile. Seems the locals do slash & burn agriculture a there and the wife's allergies couldn't tolerate the pollution.
Something to consider, thanks for sharing!
Has anyone lived in Tepic, Nayarit
So just curious with end of October coming and Dia de Los Muertos. Have you been to one and any recommendation for what city
I spent Dia de Muertos in Oaxaca City a few years back (2018), and it was a great experience. Another great place is Patzcuaro in Michoacan. Wherever you decide to spend Dia de Muertos, I suggest booking accommodation now as it's already filling up!
Good info, you gave us another side of these cities to think about (especially CDMX).
🇲🇽😎
Sorry off topic but I can’t find your video that discusses the bank you suggested with no international fees or offers ATM fees reimbursement? Was it Charles Schwab?
Yes, Charles Schwab!
Curious that Gudalajara is on this list yet, you just relocated there. What was it that outweighed the negatives?
This video has all the same cities that were featured in my best places to live video! My goal with this video was to show the type of person who might not be a good fit for the various cities since even if a place is a great place to live it still isn’t for everyone!
I'm still considering Allende for my destination.
San Miguel is a great spot!
You are a major reason that we recently celebrated our first year here, in Sante Fe, Juriquilla, Querétaro. Thanks!!! OMG!!! Why doesn't the whole world know about this place. One drawback...a little (no, a lot) boring. Still, awesome weather, people (I have lived all over the world. Are Mexicans and Querétarons, in particular, the nicest?). I have been ill, and in hospital, so I might of missed it, but did you guys tie the knot? Sonora Grill?
I'm sorry to hear you were sick & hope you're feeling better now! Yes, we got married in Puerto Escondido in February 🥰
Cdmx is loud but it’s an amazing 🤩 city. Great food, people, entertainment, ect. Nothing else to complain about .. oh yeah pollution! 🤷♀️
Good video but some of the info/opinions are really quite subjective, if anyone is considering moving to Mexico they really need to spend time in their chosen city and find out what they like or don’t like. 😊
Of course, this and other videos like it are just a starting point!
Great Video with excellent information. I was hoping to see Lake Chapala on your list of places to live in Mexico.
Thanks for watching, Denis! Have you spent time in Chapala or is it somewhere you’d like to visit & perhaps live?
@@alex-wittman Hi There. I am planning to visit Lake Chale sometime soon. I am considering moving there once I retire (at least rent for a few months to see how it works out). I hear the weather is excellent and the location is safe. Plus, my native language is Spanish.
Hola Alex saludos
Hola! Gracias por ver!
I really got a lot from this video, great job! I'd like to see more like it in other places in Mexico like, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Bucerias, Nuevo Vallarta, Sayulita, etc. We are unsure what side of Mexico is the best fit for us.
Well, I'd like a more egalitarian Nafta
In addition to my comment, I did not know about you so I did not attempt to contact you for a meet up. But I will move to CDMX in late 2023 or early 2024, then we can meet up!
Wishing you all the best for your move to CDMX!
I love the idea that we can just say" hey I want to move here". But how do the Mexicans feel about it?
Guanajuato City (based on five weeks in 2005): Not a good place for driving and not a good place for those who have issues walking up and down hills. Based on videos I have seen, Taxco has the same issues.
Yeah, most of those cities were founded/built before cars were invented so the cars had to adapt to the streets; a lot of old towns have that same issue and people there are used to walking everywhere.
Hola, if you need any help with La Paz, we are here to exchange information.
Although individuals provided their opinion overall this vid had a negative vibe which surprised me. I’ve researched & traveled enough to know that for every negative the pluses more than make up for it.
I suggest you check out the companion video: ruclips.net/video/14kmF1ZieUQ/видео.html All the same cities with the positives of living in each spot 👍🏼
