  • When the concept of Vision Zero was introduced in 1995, it turned the traditional view of road safety work upside down. From a focus on the prevention of accidents, the present direction is that no-one should die or be seriously injured in traffic.

    Visual interpretation:
    Vision Zero
In Sweden, the road safety work is goal oriented and systematic
The basis is cooperation with several stakeholders
    It brings results
New picture: A timeline from year 2000 to 2022 shows. In year 2000 there were 591 road traffic fatalities. In year 2022 there were 227.
Since the Vision Zero was launched, fatalities in road traffic has more than halved
1997 - The Swedish parliament adopted the Vision Zero
1998 - first 2+1 road. Median barriers save around 65 lives each year
2005 - Mandatory bicycle helmet for children
2007 - First traffic cameras in use. They save 20 lives every year
2008 - Management by objectives and the use of performance indicators:
    • Speed limits
    • Sober drivers
    • Seat belt wearers
    • Cyclists wearing a helmet
    • Safe cars
    • Safe roads
    • Safe cycle, moped and pedestrian passages
2013 - Safety rating of major roads
2018 - geofencing. A digital fence to limit the speed and which vehicles are allowed to drive in the zone
2019 - Call on sustainable speeds of large transport buyers
2020 - 3rd Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in Stockholm. UN member states sign the Stockholm Declaration
2022 - Consumer safety testing of heavy trucks by Euro NCAP. FIA Road Safety Index a method to assess the road safety footprint of companies
A great deal to be proud of and the journey continues…towards the next interim target:
A maximum of 133 road traffic fatalities in 2030
Vision Zero - together we save lives.

Safe bicycle crossings etc is the biggest lie, Trafikverket. Bicycle accidents have increased as bicycle infrastructure are built only to keep bicycles off the roads so that cars can drive virtually as fast as they want.
