Howdy it’s Mike from Alabama 7b north Alabama I enjoy your vidieos still I’ve said howdy a while back I have several butterfly bushes yess your right never cut it back early I learned the hard way last dec freeze went to 2 degrees lost all of them and other things but I got 4 new ones that look great even a yellow one
Howdy Mike! Yes, last December's freeze was horrible! 🥶 I'm glad you bought some new butterfly bushes -- the yellow one sounds unique! I think I'm going to buy a dwarf one next year if I can decide on a color! 🦋
I have a multi colored Butterfly bush in my front yard in front of the porch and it gets almost as high as our apartment it grows really good only issue I have is I want to deadhead it when it comes times and have never before but we get a lot of bumble bees on it and im alergic so i have got to figure something out its above knee high right now and really green growing good here in ky ,Ive been able to photograph about 7/8 different species of butterflys last year hope this year is better for it.
Hi Laura, I also garden in Southern NJ zone 7a. My Pugster Blue butterfly bush has done amazingly well in my garden bed surrounding my deck. However, the side of the bush that faces the deck is very sparse, actually pretty darn bare. I do remember you mentioning this happens to one of your butterfly bushes. I’m trying to think of a small evergreen to plant around the base on this bare side. I had Tater Tot arbs there this year, but just moved them because the butterfly bush was shading them too much. What do you think about planting Hellebores here?
Hi Allison -- glad to meet another NJ gardener! 👋 It's amazing how much full sun butterfly bushes need, isn't it? While "the back" of mine have filled out a bit over time, they are still not as full as the rest of the shrub -- like you're describing as well. Hellebores would love that area -- that's such a great idea you have -- because they will appreciate being shaded in the Summer, and then you'll have some beautiful evergreen color in the Winter and Spring plus pretty flowers during those seasons as well! And Hellebores really are easy-care too, so you won't have to fuss with them other than to clip off the leaves when they start to brown. (I have a video on that.) I love the idea! Now you have the problem of which ones to grow -- there are so many and they are all so beautiful! 😃
@@GardenSanity Yeah, it looks meh. One main stem with a few off shoots and blooms. Didn’t show up til July! Usually, the ones I see in my town bud out on the old wood, but I guess the cold snap killed them.
Hi Joseph -- yes you can plant it now. Make sure you add some mulch around the base of the plant to help keep the roots from drying out during the Winter. And if you haven't watched my other Butterfly Bush videos -- please do over the Winter season. The main thing to remember is this: they are very slow to wake up in the Spring...sometimes -- depending of course on the Winter conditions -- you might not see new leaf buds until late Spring to early Summer. So don't panic if they aren't leafing out as soon as some of your other garden plants and shrubs. Please keep me posted next Spring!
Last year was my first year with buddleia and I had it in a oversized pot and planted before winter. I thought the move killed it but I did prune it a bit once it got settled so? Either way I am sure I had to be the cause of it's demise. Lol
I'm sorry you lost your butterfly bush. 🙁 Even though nurseries sell buddleia in the Fall, it's actually much better to plant them in the Springtime or early Summer -- whether in a pot or in the ground. This way, the roots have much more time to get established before the Winter season. Maybe try again with a new one next Spring? They are wonderful shrubs! 🦋
Your videos are also so well explained & helpful, Laura! THANK YOU!!!!!!!
You’re welcome Elise, and thank YOU for your feedback! 😊🦋
Thank you for the helpful hints, I will do that to my butterfly bush!
You're welcome Barbara! Glad to help! 🦋

My Buddleia died to the ground last winter. Yup. I have a butterfly stick. 😂
A stick? 😂 They usually do die to the ground in your zone, but should return even late sometimes in June. Does the stick have leaves? 🍃

July! Wow! Maybe next Summer it will bounce back. 🤞I think that horrible freeze we all had last December was the main culprit. 🥶
The branches of our butterfly bushes are heavy and hanging to the ground...So don't cut back in fall?
Received butterfly bush in pot its Oct can I plant them now N.Y zone 7

@@GardenSanity Yes that was what I planted to do. I thought it may fair better. I unfortunately learn through plant homicide most of the time lol.
@CA-rx9ze 😂 You made me literally laugh out loud with “plant homicide!” It wasn’t intentional, just an accident! 🙂
@@GardenSanity Involuntary plant slaughter? Lol
@@CA-rx9ze 🤣😂🤣 That almost sounds worse than plant homicide! 🤣😂🤣
