The same lesson was demonstrated in 2022 by the Utah Democratic Party. They chose not to nominate a Democrat to run for Senate against rightwing Republican Mike Lee, so that independent (former Republican) Evan McMullin could run head-to-head against Lee without a Democrat spoiler on the ballot to split the anti-rightwing coalition. McMullin received a higher percentage of the vote than any Democrat had in Utah. The lesson is that the best way to defeat rightwing Republicans in states & districts where Democrats can't win is to let a moderate, pro-democracy independent run head-to-head against the Republican. Democrat-leaning donors too need to learn to support independent candidates where a Democrat isn't running, because defeating rightwing candidates is very useful.
Exactly that. This is why I cant understand why democrats are always so furious with joe manchin. I mean I can understand frustrations when he doesnt vote 100% for democrats all the time but he gave democrats the majority as a senator from one of the reddest states.
