    PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY
    Chapter 2
"There is no such thing as a good influence, Mr. Gray. All influence is immoral--immoral from the scientific point of view."
    "Why?"
"Because to influence a person is to give him one's own soul. He does not think his natural thoughts, or burn with his natural passions. His virtues are not real to him. His sins, if there are such things as sins, are borrowed. He becomes an echo of some one else's music, an actor of a part that has not been written for him. The aim of life is self-development. To realize one's nature perfectly--that is what each of us is here for. People are afraid of themselves, nowadays. They have forgotten the highest of all duties, the duty that one owes to one's self. Of course, they are charitable. They feed the hungry and clothe the beggar. But their own souls starve, and are naked. Courage has gone out of our race. Perhaps we never really had it. The terror of society, which is the basis of morals, the terror of God, which is the secret of religion--these are the two things that govern us. And yet--"

George Sanders is magnificent. And also in this his character is correct. Youth once gone is lost forever. What you wished you had done when young will haunt you when you are old. The only regrets I have are things I didn't do. Not the things that I chose to do even if they seemed foolish at the time.

Oscar Wilde could write dialogue so well.

This is the Evil Tony Stark. He even sounds like RDJ's Sherlock Holmes.

I never suspected my influence on others might be other than benevolent.

George Sanders was born to play this role. It's funny, Wilde thought readers assumed he was like Lord Henry in real life (in fact he thought he was more like Basil),and I think people assumed Sanders was much the same, but reading books by and about him and he seems to have been a lot more introverted and had a large heart, he just projected this bored wit image to people.

Well, there are quite a few other versions, apparently. But the only other one I've seen is a newer version just called "Dorian Grey" from 2009, a TV movie I guess, with Colin Firth and Ben Barnes.

There were seven silent movie versions of *The Picture of Dorian Gray,* the last of which, *The King of Life* (1918), featured Bela Lugosi as Lord Henry. The 1945 version starring Hurd Hatfield, from which this clip is taken, was the first sound version. *Dark Shadows* producer Dan Curtis made a very effective version for television in 1973 starring Shane Briant, recycling some of the sets from the gothic soap opera, and using many of the Robert Cobert musical cues. A 1961 TV version aired as part of a series called *Armchair Theatre* starred Jeremy Brett as Dorian. 15 years later, in 1976, the BBC dId a TV version for its *Play of the Month* series starring Peter Firth as Dorian, Jeremy Brett as Basil, and John Gielgud as Lord Henry. Yet another TV version was made in 2006, starring former child actor David Gallagher as Dorian. Quite a few other versions have been made, as well.
