    This class action suit should be opened up to EVERY GM product with this junk AFM installed. All one has to do is surf the internet for information regarding the MASSIVE engine failures in GM vehicle with the AFM system! There are SO many people who have had to come out of pocket to either rebuild their engines or replace them due to this junk system! I think GM should have to reimburse every one and offer to perform the AFM delete mod to this motor in ANY vehicle that has it!!

    It is just insane to me that gm is still having this issue! I bought a 2007 suburban in January of 2020 with 120k miles. In June of 2020 an AFM lifter collapsed so I tore down the engine and rebuilt it myself (keeping the afm system because I didn't want to replace the cam and get a tune). I removed both heads and replaced all 16 lifters. The head gaskets were not matching so I assume that the truck had already had this issue before my ownership. In September 0f 2020, almost exactly 5000 miles later and 3 days after an oil change, another damn lifter collapsed! I bought a 2020 Toyota tundra out of frustration because those things are supposed to be bulletproof. My plan was to fix my suburban and sell it. I removed the engine, fully cleaned the internals and externals, upgraded the oil pump, and replaced all the bearings, rings, and seals you can think of. I put a BTR cam in it and LS7 style lifters to fully delete the afm system. I ended up keeping it because I think it's pretty cool to drive something I built and it has been reliable for the last 15k miles. So my question to GM is: why can I, a 22 year old who learned everything he knows on RUclips, build a more reliable 5.3 than one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world?

    Dynamic fuel management didn't start full production until late 2020. Also, it doesn't matter if you disable the AFM/DFM systemS the parts are still moving and can till fail.
    I have replaced lifters and pushrods on 2021 5.3L with the system disabled from the factory(RPO YK9) due to lack of microprocessor.
    Just finished a lifter job today on a 2021 Silverado RST. We disassembled a new and old lifter and the new lifters have different locks and a heavier spring.

    I have never trusted cylinder deactivation. It was always a problem waiting to happen. When I ordered my 2022, I specifically chose not to have the auto start stop option (yes it is a Ford). My dream truck was always a GMC HD in my youth. I don’t take joy in these problems at all. Hope GM pulls their head out, for the sake of consumers everywhere.

Granted I’m antiquated in my thinking and still haven’t been convinced that a 1966 Chevy Belair is any worse than a 2022 Chevy Silverado. I see almost no benefits to these new vehicles given they have issues around the same mileage as an old carbureted v8. In fact my 94 Silverado had 400,000 miles before I rebuilt it knowing it didn’t actually need the rebuild but I was there and fixing another issue so why not

      The issue is that people who need a truck are likely the smaller group compared to people who WANT a truck.
      Keep in mind this kind of focus on fuel efficiency over reliability arose from the post 9/11 world where gasoline first bounced around 4$/gal.
      So auto makers were designing trucks for COMMUTERS who are too fat to fit comfortably in a sedan (cuz this is america) rather than tradesman and workers who know reliability and repairability are more important than finding how much metal you can turn into plaatic to shave a few pounds off etc.
      And commuters care about gas prices. It's seriously so annoying btw just get an ebike to cut back on fuel dependency then you can drive your truck when needed.

      Heard that brother. My 08 has 245,000 on it. This truck is a shame in some ways and incredible in others. For as old as my truck is , it drives surprisingly good and so much of it has just been as stout as it can be. I still get compliments on it and some people less car savvy think it's a new truck. Some of the things done though just defy logic. So many cheap decisions made. It's frustrating to see a truck built so perfect yet so crappy.

      @@armandohernandez1412 I dunno, even on the major GM truck forums one is known as a "delete" and the other as "deactivated" or "disabled". Symantics maybe for some, but is a key difference.

We have sinced changed all lifters on passenger side, and i bought the truck off of them. Now hearing noise from driver side lifters on start up, sometimes. Truck as of today now has 255,000. Must have been luck with the original lifters. 247,000 miles was a really good run. Im surprised this lawsuit only goes as far back as 2014 when in reality AFM goes back much further. I had lifted failure on my 2008 that cost a boat load of money to fix and ultimately the repair only lasted a year as the mechanic shop only replaced the one bad lifter. As it turned with some research I found that there were also two recalls, one to upsize the screen on the oil pressure sending unit and one for Lifter Oil Manifold Assembly itself. I decided to do the repair myself this time, and I mean repair the whole thing since the mechanic shop sucked so bad. But really it comes down the the AFM being such a garbage system that should have been discontinued years ago. After I fixed my 6.0 and I found the module to plug into the OBD2 port to bypass and never use that pile of crap system again. I only wish I could reimbursed for the 1000s of dollars I put into my 08 silverado

    I am 69 yrs old. I have owned nothing but General Motors cars and trucks since I got my drivers license in 1969. I have owned Pontiac's in the late 1060's. Then Oldsmobile Cutlass from 1977 until 1986, then Chevy Monte Carlo's until 1988. Then GMC Jimmy and GMC pick ups buying my last GMC pick up in 2017. I was trading every couple of years and never put more than 35 to 45,000 miles on them. I decided to just keep the 2017 since I was retired by that time still it had less than 60,000 on it and I dodged ever having the problems with the AFM/DFM. although I had purchased the plug in over ride device for $100.00 and it worked. I know the owner of my GMC dealer very well and had always bought my trucks through his dealership. I went by his home for coffee one Saturday in late 2020 and told him I was ready to get a new Sierra Denali. He point blank told me that with all the issues with engines and now transmissions he could not recommend buying one. Instead he sent me to a Toyota dealer where he knew the owner, he recommended a Tundra Limited. It came standard with a 5.7 V-8 and a 6 speed automatic transmission. No cylinder deactivation or the hated "Auto Stop" that cuts the motor off when stopped. A drive train with 8 years of service and no repeated issues. He found me the color I wanted with leather. I couldn't believe I was taking the plunge but I did. it's a new 2021 and Toyota's last year for their V-8. I'm so glad I listened to my friend, I love it, it drives great and the ride for a full size pick up is very good. I was getting around 17 miles to a gallon and 18 to 19 hwy in my 2017 GMC and the Toyota is about a a mile per gallon less on both. The Toyota doesn't have the styling and the interior isn't quite as nice of the Sierra or Silverado but at this age I'm not willing to fight the battles. I believe the 2022 Tundra's have the cylinder deactivation and auto stop. No more that I drive I believe this Tundra will out last me. I have always stuck keeping my vehicles serviced on time.

      The government didn’t tell GM to not support warranty claims and not to fix the problems. Nor did the government tell GM to place a poorly thought out DOD system with reliability issues on millions of vehicles. GM is trying to bury the problem just as they did with the 6 spd auto problem. Don’t blame the government. Your continued support of GM by buying defective by design trucks makes it your fault too.

    Our '21 Silverado with the DFM L84 5.3 had the lifters fail at 585 miles. This happened almost exactly a year ago prior to the updated TSB guidance so they only replaced the damaged lifters on cylinders #6 and #8. I really hope this class action results in a recall with upgraded parts for current owners. I only drive the truck in L7 (8-speed transmission) to disable DFM and I still can get 20 MPG cruising on the highway without DFM in 7th gear. If I had known this was going to happen, though, I never would have bought the truck and really regret not going for the 6.6 gas 3/4 ton instead.

I dropped a lifter at 7000 miles and it sat in the dealership for 9 weeks waiting for parts. Then at 18000 Dropped another lifter and sat at different dealership for 2 weeks waiting for parts. Now my truck has about 33000 miles and running low oil pressure on the guage. Start the truck up after sitting awhile and oil pressure is good. Drive about 10-15 miles oil pressure drops. When I say drops it is on the first line above 0. Warning lights come on and drive it to dealership (hoping motor would blow up to get a new motor) leave it running for them to look at it. They put the computer on it and says sending unit out of spec. I look at the service writer and said "Really thats what you see. Would have never thought that." So now what. I now have the PO304 code and engine tick with only 67K miles and no rough driving or heavy towing. Waiting on dealer appt. to see just how bad mine is and if the warranty will kick in. I owned a 2014 Camaro 2SS 6.2L with a manual 6 speed transmission, which like you stated did come without he AFM system. Never had a problem and it was a beast. So I decided in 2/2021 to buy a 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 Trail Boss LT. I LOVE this truck but right at 24,000 miles, welcome the lifter issue. When I spoke with the service manager at Powers Swain dealership in Fayetteville NC , he did tell me that they would replace all the lifters since they had the truck in the shop already. I also had to take it back at about 12,000 miles for a transmission leak. The shop told me that the leak was due to "loose" transmission pan bolts on one of the corners of the pan. "They fixed it." At my last oil service I asked the mechanic to let me look under the truck while it was on the lift. Needless to say the transmission fluid leak was still there, and it did not look like it was from the pan, it looked like one of the rear seals on the transmission was leaking and dripping which during driving, the fluid could be blown all over. I am two weeks and a payment without my truck and the hold up seems to be a back order on head gaskets. And I wait.

    The thing I don't understand about big companies and this isn't just limited to automakers but large companies in general; is that they know of these issues pretty quickly after they are discovered. Whether that is through the owners of the vehicles or through their own internal testing. Instead of admitting mea culpa, they would rather sweep it under the rug and kick the can down the road until the wind pushes it back and hits them in the face via a class action lawsuit. I'll never understand this mindset, ever.

    • @elvism684
      @elvism684 2 года назад +2

      Same here but it’s about money. They were probably hoping the failure rates would be low and took a gamble. Rather then pay for all engines with the defect design. If they lose this lawsuit they will probably take another gamble and just extend warranty based on time or mileage instead of recalling the engines and/or transmission, a lot of car companies do this.
      How much off these trucks are already totaled? $$$ Saved.
      They should think about the long term if they don’t want to go bankrupt again.

    • @hebson21
      @hebson21 2 года назад +2

      Generally speaking, say a car company has a defective part on every car that will break within a few years. The corporate question is, will it cost more to replace the parts under a recall, or will the inevitable lawsuit cost more?
      Most of the time if the fault is drivetrain or electronic related, the company will gamble with lawyers. If it is a safety concern - i.e. seat belt/air bag/ brakes they will recall the parts, cause the lawsuits would definately be costlier than the recall.
      Its pretty shitty, but thats how most companies(at least large ones) operate, purely financial...

    • @williamguillIII
      @williamguillIII 2 года назад +2

      Because they figure it's lest costly to fix the issue, when it happens under warranty and then the consumer will pay for it after the warranty expires. So, in essence, they are saving money by NOT replacing them all in a recall at one time.

    • @shawnhicks619
      @shawnhicks619 2 года назад

      You also have to understand they are required to equip the AFM to meet CAFE and emissions standards. Otherwise they would be required, and likely will in the near future, smaller displacement engines with turbos or superchargers.
      I do t know about current standards but I believe at one time the only v8 engines that could not have AFM and VVT were commercial. But that may have changed.

Dealer replaced only number 5 notified truck not running right on number 5. Diagnosed cam issue and replaced under warranty. Waited 7 weeks for head gasket (global shortage) Fortunately GM Canada provided me with a silverado rental covered by them at a cost of $4250 for rental. Got truck back and now left with no confidence! I hope there will be a class action here in Canada as well. This is the 4th new truck since 2014 Not sure what to buy next. I own 2015 Silverado 5.3. Had the lifter failure at 248,390 miles. That's right, I got 248,390 miles before lifter failed. I took the engine out myself and deleted the AFM system. Replaced all of the lifters with LS7 lifters, and ordered a HP Tuners unit and shut off the AFM at the computer. I reinstalled the engine and it runs like a dream. Best mileage so far has been 24.6 mpg. I regularly get 20-22 mpg. It has the six speed tranny. Yes, I love my truck, but I do not love the AFM system. It nearly destroyed GM when they developed it back in 1981. BTW I think they need to junk the AFM system along with MARY BARRA. BTW #2 If you get the HP Tuners unit, you can retune the transmission lockup that causes the torque converter failure. You see, GM has the torque converter going into lockup AT 11 MPH!!! You can disable that function for the first, second and third gears and not stress your tranny. While you are at it you should remove the thermostat for the transmission fluid. That thermostat opens up at 194 degrees (to save about 1/10 mpg of gas!) but it destroys the tranny. Just take it out altogether and enjoy your truck!

    It's a miserable system. In November I took a road trip with a Pulsar LT installed. I got 21 mpg on I-95. Out of curiosity I removed the Pulsar and did the same road trip (FLA to NC) I got 17.7 on this trip. DFM is a waste!

    GM should give us 10 year 100k mile warranties, like many other manufacturers already do. I had a pump in my torque converter go our with just 1200 miles left on my 60k powertrain warranty. Total cost for repair, including a rental while it was in shop for 3 weeks, would have been over $4k!

      Yup my hummer h3 converter overdrive went out at 70,000 mi. I changed fluid it at 50,000 and put it amsoil . Well dealer claimed torque converter was bad batch from a supplier.
      Dangs ; it’s a cutthroat business -
      All em got their problems; but why can’t they just refine them instead of redesign. EPA pressure crap.

      California drives a lot of this shit. It makes sense for the manufacturers to build to the strictest measures. Same reason we have a 3rd cat under the truck. It's practically worthless but it has to comply to California standards

    Thanks for doing this video on this CA Lawsuit. Keep us informed. Just curious, do you use a full synthetic engine oil in your Silverado truck and how often to do you change your oil? Did the CA Lawsuit mention anything about engine oil type that may have impacted failures? Also, I had the same smile on my face as you did, back in 1977 when i removed my BBQ grills (same as your truck) from my 1977 Trans Am and put Glass Pac exhausts on to give it an awesome sound.

      No the oil doesn’t matter. My 2020 trailboss, oil changed at 2k miles, then just before 6k. Rods and lifters went at 8k. They’re making junk engines. I traded it in for a 2021 ranger as soon as I got it back. I’ll never give GM another penny. When you spend $60k on a truck you expect it to last longer than 6 months

    • @UntamedOutdoorsmen
      @UntamedOutdoorsmen 2 года назад +1

      For the 07-18 trucks if you aren’t consistent with oil changes even by a little bit that’s how these lifter issues start. Always change the oil every 5k with a full synthetic. Every time someone goes over or starts to neglect their truck is when they start complaining about the issues. For some reason these trucks just can’t handle long oil change intervals well. 2019+ trucks are a totally different story. They’re awful, that’s just terrible workmanship and quality.

    • @lesterparker1594
      @lesterparker1594 2 года назад +3

      @@UntamedOutdoorsmen I’m not saying you’re wrong, but they also just built them wrong. Mine blew up at 8k miles and I had already done 2 oil changes with Mobil 1 full synthetic. Sure some people neglect them, but GM also made them like junk.

    • @UntamedOutdoorsmen
      @UntamedOutdoorsmen 2 года назад

      @@lesterparker1594 yeah I agree with you I had an 09 sierra did very tedious maintenance and never ran into a singular issue regarding lifters. Doing the same thing on my 2014, afm disabled, less miles and has lifter clatter and noise just like the rest of them. 14-18 aren’t bad trucks but they’re definitely worse then 07-13. 2019+ have reached a new level of awful and bad quality. Nothing you can do to prevent the issues you had.

    The other problem is, if its still a problem with new engines then GM clearly doesn't know how to fix the problem either. They should sue the feds and EPA for all the restrictions they put on manufacturers for miniscule mpg gains.

    I'm going to be looking at this closely, I bought a 2018 with 27k on it. At 35k the lifters failed and my truck died as I rolled it into a dealership down the street from me. Never to start again, they replaced the motor and I can tell this one is having the same noises and low oil pressure it suffered from when the previous motor went out and I'm only at 22k.

    Spent over $6000.00 later.
    Just so the technician to tell me I need a new engine.

    And since my warranty was expired GM
    Would not give me a break on price.
    Even though the engine was proven defective from manufacturing.

Since I got my hands on it (180k) I've been doing the following; Mobil 1 full synthetic every 5k miles or 6 months. I also run a range disable device. So far, no issues.
