I feel it was just tragic how he created so much and constantly just got the shaft. He was a MONUMENTAL force amongst guitarists and also as a composer. Never got the accolades he deserved. Sykes has always held a spot in my top 3 list. Huge loss, grateful to have been alive and to have followed his career and journey since the beginning.
I met Sykes in '03 in Dublin, he signed my guitar and he was so cool, just himself in the lobby with a couple of roadies met him in the bar night before after the gig. The mans talent was off the scale. His version of "God Rest You Merry Gentleman" on the Merry Axemas album is phenomenal. I'll always treasurd having met him and telling him how much I lived thd Blue Murder album. RIP Legend
That was great! I got to see John in Tygers, Lizzy and Whitesnake. Just a talent. That wide vibrato was such a trademark. You always knew you were watching someone special, I had that seeing both Cliff and Phil as well. Love Bad Boys Live by the way. Often gets a blast in the car.
I’m 58 and knew that Sykes was fully responsible for that Whitesnake record. I had been following him since Tigers of Pan Tang and Thin Lizzy. Such an amazing player and found out later what an amazing singer as well, when I got the Blue Murder CD. RIP Mr Sykes.
Thank you for this. I've listened to that 2004 album many times since I discovered it last week, and shared it with friends. It sounds amazing, and his playing was on point.
That’s so cool you did that Bad Boy Live album. I have listened to that for years. It’s the only recording of Jelly Roll that I could find where he played electric and did the lead stuff at the end.
What blessings to have the opportunity to get work with Sykes - I was always waiting for his next album that never came always some hiccup - Superb job on Bad Boys Live !!! He will be missed !!!
I've been compiling an Excel spreadsheet with Nik Green's synth presets (Roland Super JX-10, Korg M1, Roland D-50) for the Blue Murder synth sounds. Something to compliment your Kemper profiles.
MSG Live at Budokan, great, great album. Schenker is probably where Sykes got the wah as a filter from...tasteful wah use, not wacka-wacka on beat. Thanks for sharing Michael!
Sykes was definitely over 6' tall. I have a photo of myself with him at NAMM 2006 and he was at least 2" taller than me, and I was just under 6' at the time.
Just getting to see this now...I spy an ENGL Special Edition in the background. As a proud owner of a Founders Edition and a past owner of 3 Special Editions I'd love to hear your take on that amp...maybe a demo...love to hear what you could conjure from one.

Whitesnake 87 is the sickest rhythm guitar tone ever and it is a crime that Keith Olsen buried all the leads in reverb

As an ex-pat from England, working class to boot, PG Tips was just the best.
It still is! 💪
Damn, NAMMthrax already?! Haha get well soon!
If you could go back would you mix it differently
That first Pro Tools rig he got was bought from The Daily Show. True story.
PG Tips 😂 English tea with milk sounds like the John I know.
RIP ( knew)💔
Michael i had no idea that you worked with John. pretty cool.
Any idea how long and what type of cancer he had?....
