I've bought into several early access games that quickly fell apart, crashed and burned. Ashes seemed like a dream, and I took a chance and got the Voyager+ pack right as covid was shutting everything down. Ashes has been real. It really is a game being made by gamers for gamers. The company and dev team are top tier. The weekend testing has been awesome, even with the bugs and the bug reporting (which the community has been on fucking top of). In the 3 weekends we've played/tested, the amount of fixes that have been addressed and rolled out week to week has been phenominal. It's night and day difference in improvement every week, and it feels great to have a dev team working as hard as this team does. This is how an MMO should feel, imo. I think it will be a popular game, people just need to have decades of hand holding washed away. It's challenging, it's fun even in it's current state, and I'm here for it.
I'm actually glad this video popped up in my feed. When MoE released and you were one of our neighbors the way you carried yourself, spoke to people and acted generally all the time I couldn't stand you. I look forward to watching a video or two in the future.
well, Welcome to the community brother! Sounds like we come from similar MMO backgrounds. I have been watching the development of Ashes for a while and hoping. All this time and it still looks like a winner.

Great to hear you have changed your mind about the project, Steven's heart is what sold me on buying in. Just to let you know though, the Rogue will be introduced the first update after Phase2 Starts. So there's not going to be a new class on Dec 20th, but as you say, there will be a wipe. Have fun testing
Respect JV, I feel this is becoming a common experience for gamers and lovers of MMOs that get a chance to actually try out Ashes. On the outside looking in, I do agree if they even get close to providing a fraction of what they are promising that the game is going to bring a lot to the genre for both PVP and PVE lovers alike in the same space. Heres to hoping.
Thank you very much... I am considering playing MMOS again after a long time and Ashes has caught my attention for a while, but I wanted to hear the opinion of the community and honest words like yours before diving into this type of projects
Definitely understand the hesitation with the early info about the game. Your list of MMOs is very similar to mine, glad more people with that background are seeing the potential in Ashes.
I remember you from Darkfall, you made that key bind tutorial. Cool to see you still having fun in some mmorpgs. I almost ganked you in a big war but your team mates were too good for me and begoned me into lava. Nice nice, give you a sub, good luck out there!
Good video. Surprised you didn't mention Crowfall, but I guess in comparison to the others, it was a brief stint. :P I had the exact same opinion you had about the game, and am happy to be wrong if that is indeed the case. Not crazy about the high cost to buy into testing, but I will probably end up playing - especially since the boys enjoy it. Those of us who swim in these waters, we've taken the bait before and been lured in to a bad end. It's understandable to be skeptical.
Approach this alpha game like a friend coming to you with an investment idea. The difference here from other friends is that this friend is allowing you to come in at anytime to invest while you are watching it be built and having a functioning product you can use from time to time while it's being worked on.
I also love PvP in MMOs. Graphics take 2nd place behind good gameplay. Im really considering buying access this weekend but Im on the fence, thanks for the info
Happy for you, brother man! Glad it's a good kind of wrong. It could have been a lot worse if you thought it was legit and it turned out to be a scam. Scepticism saves you from being dissappointed in others.
@@alimoorad5998 I have only played albion for a couple hours on mobile but from what I have seen it seems to be more of the traditional tab target style. I would describe action combat in an mmo as WASD movement and your cursor is locked in the middle of your screen as an aiming reticle and moves the camera as you move the mouse. With the soft lock in the Elder scrolls online. you essentially aim at the enemy you want to use an ability on and the ability tracks to them as if they were targeted in tab target.. but to engage a different enemy all you have to do is aim at them and it will target them instead almost like an FPS game. In my opinion this feels more fluid than trying to tab or click target a seperate enemy when switching. Sorry for the long reply kinda hard to explain without showing
@@kickrocks4766 it doesn't get a lot of love for some reason but I've put around 3000 hours into the game and I think it's done really well for an MMO. I love it
@@SlimShady-hk8qp Ohhh! Okay got it got it. That makes sense! Thanks for the explanation. Like the name suggests, it does sound more like a traditional action game or something which is cool for an MMORPG honestly! So lets say if I was a melee class and im running around and my "Q" is a spin slash...if im fighting someone and they are a little far away from me, if Im aiming at them and press "Q" will I still attack but miss? Or will it only allow me to slash if like the player is in range for the ability...I guess the same question applies for the standard auto attack. Thanks man! I appreciate it! And to be h9nest, action combat sounds amazing!!!
Nice video with well-explained thought processes as you learned more about the game. Just a small correction. I heard the rogue class release for phase 2 is getting delayed.
Im happy you are enjoying the game but i truly believe embark will give us exactly what the said. Steven seems to be the type of person to truly give it his all when it comes to something he is passionate about. He has picked an amazing group of people to work with and I highly respect them all. They’re so talented and it shows each progress update and now during this Alpha 2 state. Im beyond excited for this game and I cant wait to play!!!
I have to disagree about the action/tab. I absolutely believe casters need to turn that shit off... but it's insanely accurate for melee. Other takes on the video, pretty spot on.
One thing im frustrated about Ashes so far is all the bugged quests and mobs that fail to spawn. I think I had to abandon like 12 within 6 hours of gameplay. I also think I wasted like an hour total waiting around for several bosses to spawn to finish a contract. They never spawned and we just disbanded and left.
Yeah doing quests is kind of pointless right now. That's not really what the alpha is currently focused on anyway. I do hope that they can come up with a decent questing system by release however, because pure grinding is a bit tiresome.
I think with ashes they are doing the right things for what they are wanting their mmo to be and do. To me it reminds of of eve online but on a planet itself with how they are marketing it myself personally and interests me a lot (but I ain’t paying $120 for alpha play testing lol). Watching others play it I see the appeal and when it comes further along maybe I will give it a go, see if I like it. I only hope them continue on this path of making something unique that wouldn’t have a lot of competition with what it is going for, I think the moment they start pulling away from that they might see people start to leave and I hope that does not happen I want to see this game succeed personally.
I think action combat is really only useful for melee classes. I do think more work needs to go into it. however, I am enjoying it as a fighter and think its a nice addition for someone coming from New World. I think I could learn to love tab from this game only because of how methodical the approach is to combat. I think the abilities take more skill and thought as opposed to only spam slamming rotations on your keyboard like most mmo's.
I don't agree about the world design. I too often encounter buildings or sceneries which just seem like assets slapped into the world (smells like AI tbh). Ancient (thousands year old) castles that look brand new, not integrating well into the terrain, etc. Mismatch between the lore and the visuals. To me the world is indeed big, but not always well designed, totally not comparable to WOW classic. Love this vid though, honest thoughts, liked it and subbed
PVP MMO's are great. Ive never played an MMO properly untill Albion Online...and the only reason I started Albion Online is because of full loot PVP..and im not disappointed. Infact, all I ever do is just corrupted dungeons (I suck at them though).
this is my first video of yours that i have seen.. seems like we have played a lot of the same games, i truly understand most of your opinions, ill be playing on phase 2. im super excited for it
Rogue got pushed but just so you know. They had to pull the team off to work on class adjustments in phase 2. They are hoping that it’ll follow soon but don’t have an exact expectation yet, least from what I’ve read.
You know. I don't want people to kill me and take my stuff. But i dont mind a game where they can. Because the choice to do that crap alows me to chose not to. And choices are cool in games.
My concerns rn are 3 things. 1. The proposed map is too large for 10k concurrent players escpecially with sailing 2. Leveling taking too long for majority of players to stay playing 3. Getting everything they want implemented and polished in a somewhat reasonable amount of time. Glad the combat plays better than it looks, feels like unpolished GW2 combat rn (which isnt a bad thing).
I agree with the first thing, but I'm sure they'll get an idea of what it's like as time goes on and will adjust if need be. The thing with the levelling. A lot of people prefer questing to grinding and I'm really not sure they are invested in making lots of really cool quests that flow in a way that makes all of the people who play stuff like wow comfortable enough to dip their toes into a game like this, which I think is a shame. Not that I want it to be like wow, but I feel like really solid questing is super important. The third thing you said, I actually have the most faith in them getting done. They're going to outsource a lot of the work and really ramp everything up once they have riverlands sorted and working well.
Great video man, i had doubts about AoC until i played the alpha2, game even in this alpha states has what i look the most in a game, something that's not tied with shit weeklies and dailies to make your gear or you fall off. The open world pvp, the corruption system everything seems perfect and i knwo people are scared about losing "items" but i hope they give it a shot and they will realize that losing only materials isn't that bad and also the corruption system will work in their favor. So far impressed, i hope they dont do a 180 like new world and turn it into an opt-in pvp, especially after asmongold got spawncamped
Ngl it was fun hating on this game, but I like a lot of what I'm seeing. Just a shame we're looking at years and years of more development after waiting so long.
I actually think it will be sooner than a lot of people think. They've done a lot of work on developing the tools required to actually make the game. Currently they're working on servers and scalability, which is going quite well. The servers are way better a couple of weeks in with minimal queues. That's with a whole new wave of testers coming in as well. Once they get the current zone sorted then they are going to outsource work to other developers and really scale up production. A lot of the systems that aren't in the test yet will also be quite far along in development, just not quite ready for public release. I really don't think 2 years is unreasonable. Maybe I'm just coping.
I also started and been playing mmorpgs since UO. I am not a fan of AoC's focus on forced grouping. Also after watching the devs threatening its paying player base to stop pvping and killing Asmongold when he was streaming turned me off the game.
If you've been playing mmorpgs since UO, you would probably know one of the biggest contributors to people not liking pvp ones is stuff like getting griefed as soon as you log into your character. Have you looked at the comments in the asmongold video? There's literally hundreds of people saying they would never play the game. They don't understand that this almost never happens to normal people, but it's super bad for their business. You have to consider that this game is costing an absolute fortune, and griefing basically just costs them money. They have said for a long time that griefing is actionable. As for grouping being forced, yeah I'm hoping it changes a bit. I mean you can solo but it's definitely slower. It's obviously still in alpha so I'm hoping they change some stuff and make questing way more worthwhile because it's currently not good.
I would not say you judgments against steven were not unfounded. Ashes is a rare scenario where it looked like a duck, sounded like a duck, and ended up being a golden retreiver. The game from top to bottom looked like it was going to be a cash grab and rug pull, and it just ended up not being that. Its actually very exciting its a real game. That being said the development timeline doesnt line up, and its clear they started from complete scratch on the entire project some time around Ashes of Creation: Apocalypse. Hope they can be candid about that at some point, but i understand as for now i get that regealing how turbulent the development clearly was would not help secure more funding and backers.
Every weekend the game is twice as good as the last. They are patching constantly. The game is already better than finished mmos out there. My plan for alpha is to try every class by taking it to level 10. After a wipe, I will take the top three most fun for me and level them each to 20. I plan to test all the gathering and some of their related processing systems. By the time of release, I will have my main class zeroed in, gathering and processing understood, my guild selected, exp farming methodology figured out. This is how you play alpha and betas. When release day comes, I will be read to ROCK!
He said steven ran his guild like an MLM and that's where he made most of his money. That's clumsy and hard to parse, so let me state it in a way that masks sense: Steven made the initial seed money for his investment firm in an MLM when he was 18-24. He ran the recruitment arm of his Archage guild like an MLM. Which makes sense, but it also makes you wonder if that is his MO. He made no money from running his guild.
@@joshuawyatt4737 LOL Ya uh I didn't word that properly at all. He did not make money from his guild. He just ran it like an MLM, where he made most of his money.
I gues will see how it goes. Nothing worth wile is ever ez. Looks like its been a long time in the making, and still needs alot of work. I have seen alot of construction, and its not always pretty at the beginning.
They will change it. Ita never gonna be like Ultima or Tibia, even if is just 1 item. Kids nowdays doesnt know oldschool game design, they cry about everything. The digital ecossystem changed, the modern game design adapted. I really doubt Ashes will keep the ideals, they gonna change for the market.
Game looks good but if that minecraft cow lookin dev keeps banning people for dumb shit (Steve I'm talking to you here buddy), games gonna die I think. Man has Daimon Fray/Jogg vibes from Gloria Victis. He's full of himself and nothing but soyboy vibes so far. We'll see though. I'm not touching it until launch, 130$ is insane for alpha, considering when I grew up people PAID beta testers to play games. -VoidEel
They don't want people to grief. PvP is cool but when people grief it drives away the player base. By the time this game is released it will have cost well over 100 million dollars to make. There's no p2w, no box cost, just a sub and a cosmetics shop. If someone pays $15 to sub for a month to try the game out and when they zone in on their level 1 and people are griefing them at the portal, then they just quit, and this keeps happening until the game dies, because a few people think it is funny. So they have two options. Don't ban people who grief (which is against their terms, and is actionable - they've talked about it plenty of times), because they might get called soyboys, OR, ban griefers and keep their playerbase and not throw 100+ million dollars into the toilet.
Lag and desynch are 100% things that have carried over from alpha into the official release of MANY games. I don't think that letting them off the hook is necessarily warranted.
I can't think of any game where you could legitimately participate in a true alpha. Every single one I can come up with was just a glorified beta or early release version.
I actually think people are too positive now. Narc had a video criticizing it and everyone attacked him, so he apologized and has only said nice things since. What are we doing?
To be fair narc went full doomer for a while and was starting to be pretty intolerable and unreasonable. Everything came to a head after Steven said maybe he should take a break. He kind of went back to how he was earlier after that. I think the general positivity at the moment is because the alpha 2 is finally out. People are seeing intrepid really trying to sort out bugs as quickly as possible. The servers have improved immensely in the past couple of weekends. And most of all, people can see that there really is a decent foundation for a game here. If they get it right, it could really scratch the itch that a lot of mmo fans have had for a long time.
@user-yk6hv6hj3p I agree, but also Everyone went from "this game is a scam" to "don't say anything bad about this game" in a month. The difference between gameplay today and the lazy peon video from FOUR YEARS AGO are nominal.
@@petergtterup4205 which is okay. Old school MMOs where partially extremely gear depended and AoC wants to be a lot like some older MMOs. Not saying I 100% agree with that because I like balanced pvp.
Multiple regions are already doing they will be releasing dec 20th along with the player driven economy, the reason we got so little of the map right off is because they wanted to condense the player base to a smaller area to apply more stress to the servers as the current stage of the alpha is entirely meant in on stress testing the servers not pushing our mass content, if everything goes to plan we should be getting over half the planned map come December, with said regions being almost as large as WoW continents (there’s tons of side by side walkthroughs comparing the current zone the river lands to the size of the whole continent of Kalimdor in WoW
Game development isn't "the map is only 20% out, so the game is only 20% complete". It's more like "we have a small team for years, working on creating the tools required to actually put the game together, we get to a point and start employing more people once our tools are ready to start adding more and more content to the world. all the while we work on the systems in the game, but a lot of these cant be introduced into the game yet because they're only 80% finished" Something like that. You basically work on perfecting one zone, then all the other ones come quickly. They're also going to outsource work, so it will speed up dramatically.
@user-yk6hv6hj3p I'm looking forward to being proven wrong. Right now, I don't see it, tho. 8 years developing tools sounds like a long time to me. After all, salaries cost a shit ton over this amount of time. And spending multiple hundrets of millions for a nieche pvp sandbox mmo is bad business practice, and even tho Steve is rich. He didn't get rich by making bad business decisions.
this game will still end up being niche, and wont beat WOW. its just a fact. im not even a wow lover. i was always a wow hater. but ive played wow a bunch in the past 4 years and still to this day, unfortunately, it hasnt been beaten. it offers something to every type of player and no mmorpg since wow's release in 2004 has beaten it.
They're really not competing with wow and they know it is niche. The guy just played a lot of archeage and lineage 2 and wants a non-p2w updated version of that kind of game.
They are going to have to do something. They are trying to appeal to too wide an audience and it's going to cause friction. I hope that they try to find some other ways to try to address the issues, they do seem to recognize the pain points involved which is half the battle, before they just outright remove nonconsenual pvp but that is usually what ends up happening when that friction presents itself, either that or only the most hardcore audience remains and then they get bored and leave because there's no pop.
Nah. That will work itself out after thing eventually settle when game launches. Plus the starting zone and lvl 5 will keep griefing down. Steven said it's pvx and that hasn't changed.
it sounds like you would be really into deepwoken, its a pvp focus permadeath mmopg like game on roblox, ik it seems dumb cause its on roblox but seriously im 22 and ive been playing mmorpgs most my life and its now one of my fav games oat and it is REALLY HARD
Background music is way too loud... unwatchable and demanding money from your viewers to test a game is pretty cringe for a streamer who makes money ..... e-begging at its best
You don't have to buy it. They already have their own paid testers outside of the people who bought keys. You really think they should spend over 100 million dollars making a game and just let a couple of hundred thousand people use their servers - at great cost to them - for a couple of years for free? The head of the studio has said about 4 million times, if you're not sure, just wait and watch streamers and play when it comes out. Hardly e-begging.

Darkfall! Best game ever tbh
Yaaa I heard it wasnt the 20th after lol oh well
Respect JV, I feel this is becoming a common experience for gamers and lovers of MMOs that get a chance to actually try out Ashes.
People do need to remember despite all the hype this thing is over a year away and possibly significantly longer. I am looking forward to it though.
Definitely understand the hesitation with the early info about the game. Your list of MMOs is very similar to mine, glad more people with that background are seeing the potential in Ashes.
I'm 100% invested in this game, because i played swg.
Im a lifetime sub owner, and I'm waiting for tulnar in 2025.
See ya then nerd.
I remember you from Darkfall, you made that key bind tutorial.
Cool to see you still having fun in some mmorpgs.
I almost ganked you in a big war but your team mates were too good for me and begoned me into lava.
Nice nice, give you a sub, good luck out there!
Lol him and his entire guild hacked in darkfall.
Love this video! Great commentary, your prior view closely mirrors mine, you have giving me hope!
Happy for you, brother man! Glad it's a good kind of wrong. It could have been a lot worse if you thought it was legit and it turned out to be a scam. Scepticism saves you from being dissappointed in others.
I love action combat on my tank. It works and feels great. You can still tab target and auto attack in it.
Where can i find that wallpaper, the knight in the rain from the beggining of the video
Action combat with a soft lock like in ESO is superior to any other combat form in an MMO in my opinion
What would you say Albion Combat is like? And what exavtly is action combat? Thanks!
@@SlimShady-hk8qpI really enjoyed ESO pvp it felt unique for an mmo pvp
Is this game click to attack or all target locking enemies and pressing keys like mmos from 30 years ago?
I'm mixed on PvP mmos. I love pvp. But I like it to be on my terms. :) I did love games like Warhammer Online and Dark Age of Camelot.
Steven is our kind of degen.
Rogue isn't going to drop at the beginning of phase 2, but it'll be in before the end or so I've heard
What time does the game go live tomorrow? November 15th
Yaaa just found that out lol
@ I’m slightly disappointed lol
Does that mean summoner isn't in either yet?
@ I don’t think summoner was coming till phase 3
I thought the alpha was a good start. I’m excited to see more content and systems added.
Trust me, if you paid the $100 for the Alpha you wouldn’t have a different opinion.
Great review. Glad to see Ashes is already growing on ppl
You know. I don't want people to kill me and take my stuff. But i dont mind a game where they can. Because the choice to do that crap alows me to chose not to. And choices are cool in games.
My concerns rn are 3 things.
1. The proposed map is too large for 10k concurrent players escpecially with sailing
2. Leveling taking too long for majority of players to stay playing
The best pvp mmo ive played is ironically runescape open world pvp version called darkscape 😂 subbed for being pvp enjoyer aswell
Well done
Keep being real, bud! Good for you!
Thanks for the honest opinion! Appreciate it.
I want to play Ranger or bard, maybe a combo of the two like a bow bard like I had in BG3
Cool vídeo!
In what way do you think they started from complete scratch? And what gives that away? And why would they do that?
Every weekend the game is twice as good as the last. They are patching constantly. The game is already better than finished mmos out there. My plan for alpha is to try every class by taking it to level 10. After a wipe, I will take the top three most fun for me and level them each to 20. I plan to test all the gathering and some of their related processing systems.
By the time of release, I will have my main class zeroed in, gathering and processing understood, my guild selected, exp farming methodology figured out. This is how you play alpha and betas. When release day comes, I will be read to ROCK!
7:35 Oh hey its Grolo :D
How did he make money off his guilds? just curious about that cause id like to do that lol
He said steven ran his guild like an MLM and that's where he made most of his money.
That's clumsy and hard to parse, so let me state it in a way that masks sense:
Steven made the initial seed money for his investment firm in an MLM when he was 18-24.
Great video mate, very genuine. Keep it up.
Bro. Great video.
Welcome to ashes brother
Lag and desynch are 100% things that have carried over from alpha into the official release of MANY games. I don't think that letting them off the hook is necessarily warranted.
I can't think of any game where you could legitimately participate in a true alpha. Every single one I can come up with was just a glorified beta or early release version.
What other game has had an actual alpha though? 90% of the time its just a "buy early" trope.
Tab for ranged, action for melee
Love what the Devs have going but the world and graphics look somewhat generic.
Not that I disagree but graphics are usually one of the last things to get fully polished. For sure lacking but it is alpha
i use action combat, shrreds over tab target brro
You can play this game 10 years lqtqre bro.
@user-yk6hv6hj3p
I agree, but also
Everyone went from "this game is a scam" to "don't say anything bad about this game" in a month.
The difference between gameplay today and the lazy peon video from FOUR YEARS AGO are nominal.
I use action combat ;-;
Tab target games are so boring and is almost only gear dependant
Here Here! There's two of us! TWO!
@@petergtterup4205 which is okay. Old school MMOs where partially extremely gear depended and AoC wants to be a lot like some older MMOs. Not saying I 100% agree with that because I like balanced pvp.
I see it this way, it took them 8 years to get together what is, 20% of what the whole map is planned to be?
ImO. it will never come out.
@joshuaarmstrong6933 I'm looking forward to it, but so far I'm not impressed, size isn't everything.
Game development isn't "the map is only 20% out, so the game is only 20% complete". It's more like "we have a small team for years, working on creating the tools required to actually put the game together, we get to a point and start employing more people once our tools are ready to start adding more and more content to the world. all the while we work on the systems in the game, but a lot of these cant be introduced into the game yet because they're only 80% finished"
Something like that.
He didn't get rich by making bad business decisions.
you gonna rat my hellgates in this game too? xD
also, great vid. excited for this game
Could you not just bank the gear you don't want to lose and go out pk? and that way you wont lose anything important.
People will do that, but then you might die to people in their real gear deciding to fight you once you attack them ;p
this game will still end up being niche, and wont beat WOW. its just a fact. im not even a wow lover. i was always a wow hater. but ive played wow a bunch in the past 4 years and still to this day, unfortunately, it hasnt been beaten. it offers something to every type of player and no mmorpg since wow's release in 2004 has beaten it.
They're really not competing with wow and they know it is niche. The guy just played a lot of archeage and lineage 2 and wants a non-p2w updated version of that kind of game.
I think they're gonna remove non consensual pvp eventually.
Steven said it's pvx and that hasn't changed.
easiest sub of my life, great video
Why would u recommend ppl to pay $100 to test an alpha?..... people are so stupid these days....
it sounds like you would be really into deepwoken, its a pvp focus permadeath mmopg like game on roblox, ik it seems dumb cause its on roblox but seriously im 22 and ive been playing mmorpgs most my life and its now one of my fav games oat and it is REALLY HARD
yoo i remember your ass from last oasis, we fought quite a bit & your group always ended up killing me lol
i love your streams
good video
Fuck yeah buddy
Jonathe ma bite
Background music is way too loud... unwatchable and demanding money from your viewers to test a game is pretty cringe for a streamer who makes money ..... e-begging at its best
I thought the music was quiet and you're the only person complaining lol.
Lol this game is super generic in a sea of generic. It'll have a big splash.. then go the way of every mmo to release in the last decade.
remember that time i 8v1'd you in 2005? LUL noob
me me me i i i
Thats you
gross
Right, I was trying to give people an insight into what I'm into and my thought process. Was kind of the point.
I was wrong too.
I thought it was something id be interested in.
But the PVX model is and always has been a bad model for online games.
Hard pass.
