although yes, the education system in America sucks, this guy has no fucking CLUE what he's talking about. I teach in Taiwan, the education system is DISASTROUS there. They start kindergarten at age 2, what the hell for? They start "learning" before they even know how to socially interact. They go to school for more hours, what does that do? it makes students DESPISE education, and what happens is people end up losing interest in learning later in life. Then he goes on to talk about how business is going to China and India, YEA BUB, because they have large, underpaid and under-educated slave populations which are ready to be exploited. Chinese students get good test scores because they focus EXCLUSIVELY on test scores and wrote memorization. They don't do group projects. They don't do presentations. They don't even have discussions in class. This leaves students VASTLY ineffective in just about every aspect of human performance except for the ability to get high test scores. This guy is talking about increasing the school days and school hours. Honestly I'm going to contact PBS myself and tell them to get me on the air because I'm sick of uninformed, posturing idiots like this spouting nonsense about things they don't even come close to understanding. The interviewer is asking the right questions and this bozo is totally missing the point. He's talking about vocational programs? Well China doesnt have vocational programs. They stigmatize anything that isn't an office job or above. Keith needs to take a good hard look in the mirror. It looks more like he's trying to justify future all expense paid trips to China, on the tax dollar no less.
I m Chinese high school graduate and I m in a college in America now. I agree with your " what happeens is people end up losing interest in learning later in life." It is what is going on in Chinese universities right now. Only a small number of college students who study the CS or engineering or BIo still have the interests in learning in China. I have many friends that are L&A majors or business major dont do shit in college at all. So the problem here this guy was not seeing is that 90% Chinese students work extremely hard in order to get in a good four-year university, but the thing is they work that hard because we have been told by our parents and teachers that everything we did in elementary school, junior school and especially high school is for freedom in university. Because no one is longer in charge of u and u can do whatever you want without teacher and parents' babbling. However, that why many Chinese students become lack of competitive ever since they get in college, because they are finally and they stop learning. It is simple actually, Chinese students have good grades from elementary to high school mostly because of parents and teachers, so in all fairness many of us gather the ability to learn by ourselves. That's the main reason why we started to loss in business exercising. Objective speaking, if we can put Chinese junior&high school education and the US university education together, it probably can work in a damn good way. And the students who are graduated from this kind of education system would the great fundamental skills and still continuous motivation and the interests to learn in college. About the stigmatized thing, that's bullshit, this is just cultural difference between the us and China. We dont stigmatize jobs that are not office job or above, we just think that jobs dont need u to take risk, stable and can always give u a certain amount of money are good jobs, because they are reliable so you dont need to worry about your wife and children. The jobs that are risky or changeable are just not traditionally good to your family.
常轶轩 If the jobs are not stigmatized, then why are those workers underpaid, undertrained and and why are the jobs generally done by people from poor families? We also can look to the general quality of workmanship. There are no standards unless a lot of money is involved. To be clear, I'm not saying quality work doesn't exist in Asia, but in Canada, where I come from, trades workers are paid well for doing quality work, we have a labor union that guarantees the quality and as a result, most of the work is of good quality. Your point of view on this subject kind of proves my point that Chinese students are unable to see more than just the surface of almost any issue due to the one way education system. Also you are missing the point about the education stuff too. It's not about working hard, certainly Chinese students work hard. The point is that the system doesn't allow for students to make connections and grow faster as a result. Believe it or not I'm writing a book on this subject right now, and it's more complicated than I can explain here, so we'll just have to wait until it's published!
I'm Doni. I make music and do stand-up comedy. Much work. Very effort. There's definitely a huge stigma for non-desk type jobs in India, which is probably the reason for the low quality infrastructure. It's a cultural mannerism we've inherited from the caste system. They look down on the people that built the roof over their head or made sure water came out their taps, fucking disgusting behaviour if you ask me.
Nitin Reddy it's definitely disgusting but in India it's at least a bit more understandable. You're right, the have/have not caste system has been in play for a long time. In China I guess they have something like that, but it's so easy to grow food in China (because of the huge amount of arable land they have, exponentially more than India) that you don't see a lot of homeless people. So it plays out a little differently. The shocking thing is that the people at the top, in all countries, feel as though they are entitled to be there, when in reality they just lucked out or stole their way to the top.
And then there is Finnland where children don't start school until they are 7, are not under this huge achievement pressure and are still on the top of the PISA list
The latest PISA results. TOP 5 (Mathematics):1. Shanghai (Ch).3. Singapore.2. Hong Kong (Ch).4. Taiwan (Ch).5. South Korea.TOP 5 (Science):1. Shanghai (Ch).2. Hong Kong (Ch).3. Singapore.4. Japan.5. Finland.TOP 5 (Reading):1. Shanghai (Ch).2. Hong Kong (Ch).3. Singapore.4. Japan.5. South Korea.
I feel like it comes down to the way the teachers are respected or paid in each country. In Asia, teachers are paid highly compared to average, not to mention respect. while in USA and Uk they are kicked around like a football.
respect is rightly said.. but they're are really paid poorly in india. But in general in india ppl know, that education will get you better lifestyle, it is safety net.
Just to clear up some myths. According to the OECD, China has also expanded school access, and moved away from learning by rote. Arizona PBS I would be glad to come in and address every point he made this summer...I'll be back in the States for five weeks for my work, I'll come to Arizona and record a segment for you all...How did this get on the air??
i am a Chinese teacher now teaching in US college, i have to say i agree with you on the society nourishes the innovation. Actually the Asian society instills too much obedience into people, and all the hard work end up being a staff, a worker, never a leader.
You know why we smarter lol our parent threat us Hahaa "Asian parents are strict...the kids are scared...don't get A's you die!!" Hahaha they don't care about hurting your feel, it call tough love. Make you do homework 24/7! We are not naturally smart , we are just hardworking people and hope to get good grades :) there is a lot of pressure on us than than the other race. we don't party because its not worth of our time. we do party a lot though we sing karaoke, family and friends gathering, and more.. Don't think every Asians is the same cause that going to make you stupid okay? Need more Asians in your life, get to know them more before you judge us. bye.
Chinese education focuses on math and physics, some chemistry. Most of the students lack original ideas, imagination, critical thinking. Basically lacking all the skills needed for innovation so now China has a great influx of accountants and engineers. A lot of the grades are bought and paid for, especially in university. If you make it to university you are basically guaranteed a degree. The education system is very narrow and only challenging in the aspect of how much one can emulate and copy.
I remember my childhood friend's mom always had her doing workbooks when we'd hang out during the summer. I probably should have asked her to let me borrow them lol! I bet she's doing really well right now.
American innovation is not because of education, it is because of American society. People like this man get determined and do some research, then he can get his idea on national television, you cannot do this in China. In China people do not really worry who they are, therefore, less motivation and more discipline.
That is absolutely true. What is killing us is the public schools, pre-university. I would say that American public schools are actually detrimental to many students' intelligence.
Actually more about culture & philosophy. when kids did not do well in school, western parents more blaming to teachers & school systems. east Asia parents more blaming to the kids that their children was not working hard enough?? this only one of the example...
Asian parents are strict...the kids are scared...don't get A's you die!!" Hahaha they don't care about hurting your feel, it call tough love. Make you do homework 24/7! We are not naturally smart , we are just hardworking people and hope to get good grades :) there is a lot of pressure on us than than the other race.
West or east it dont matter, if they can join together and learn from each other and incorporate the benefits of both cultures think of what we could do.
I still remember that my history teacher from a Las Vegas public middle school have us doing cross words and coloring maps during the class most of the time while she talks to another teacher next door. That was my first school year in US. I thought I was in heaven! LOL.......
What I saw in America I couldn't understand until I lived in China and it all made more sense that in the US public schools the kids are being tested all the time now. So instead of learning something of importance they're learning how to pass a test so that they can graduate and the school district receives more federal funds. So yes Mr.Ballard it's about money!!! Without testing I have personally seen 1st hand a school place a child with an IQ of 170 in to a special ED class just for the money
I studied in Xavier School a Jesuit run Chinese school in the Philippines and I believe the study methodology carried me through law school. Now that I am in the U.S. and almost retired, I take time to do Mandarin tutorials. It’s a good thing as Martha Stewart likes to say ...but I do like the Japanese educational system where for the first 2 or 3 years the child is taught Respect, , Good Manners n right Conduct.... I had to be Bribed to continue my studies cos I disliked religion and other “useless” subjects. LOL
Im not a professional if ever there was one in this case, but I think there are a lot of cultural issues here in the US that play a part in why the education system isnt working. Basically our culture is all about making money by any means necessary, throwing the needs of the people under the bus in the process, people grow to hate education and want to get away.
So what did he base this on except the PISA that the Chinese themself said back in 12 did not represent the country, and they wanted to adopt a more Japanese/ south korean model, because they were right behind Shanghai, just with half as much study time. I am this is really old, but it just seems that everybody is looking at nr 1 without taking a look at how they top 5 are doing or top 3.
Nowadays Chinese kids are smart. They are not really "conformed" to the kind of obedience you mentioned, but just "pretend" to obey you when they are at school. It's good training since you need to pretend to be a good servant of your boss and be a good actor once you enter into the workforce when being adult~ It doesn't suffocate innovation at all~ We Chinese are the best strategists and deceptionists in the world~
I think the reason why US is still a powerhouse is becoz US still have a high living standards and good freedom so best talents from other countries (China, India, Korea, Europe, Russia) go to US. US is more like a blood sucker now than before. However, as the country become more and more populated by some ppl (you know what I'm talking about), it become less and less attractive to elites. In that case, "Bang!!!" US economy crashes. If countries like China and India are going to treat their talents very well and crack down corruptions, US will be in a "drained" condition. Currently, US is still a much much better place for elites to go than the above two countries.
I mean ... you need a definition of 'smart'. What is smart ? Creativity ? Technical competency ? Maybe your answer is yes, but all of them are based on the amount of knowledge you have mastered. Great ideas don't come out of nowhere, they always have a solid knowledge background as a base ...
Look at it Lol . Its an to compare Chinese education system to United States and Indian education . One that is for money and one that is there for a civilization .
My Dear friend, Someone said every child is a born genius... Only to be converted into an idiot by the schooling system... Every child is unique.... Blessed with skills.... Develop these..... Education needs to make children more evolved human being.... Every child is a microcosm.. Education needs to be for self exploration.... This way you create more harmony.... Children needs to be happy when they grow..
Many school systems hire younger teachers, "the Millennials aka Generation Y" from programs like America’s Choice, or Teach for America, or some other groups and develop a reciprocal partnership to get a financial, federal kick-back in funds. Why keep an experienced senior teacher making more money when they can hire an inexperienced young teacher and pay that person much less? Also, by firing a senior teacher, they can save the system money by not paying benefits like health insurance and life insurance. Unfortunately, money is more important to them than cultivated education. So aside from 14th amendment violations practiced by some preferential principals, money is another motive for firing tenured senior teachers. If these senior teachers do not retire, or resign then, they are issued unsatisfactory evaluations, or their working environment is made uncomfortable. . . In other countries, experienced, senior teachers are greatly valued and respected for their knowledge. Perhaps that is the reason that “U.S. students’ academic achievement still lags that of their peers in many other countries.” www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/02/15/u-s-students-internationally-math-science/
There is innovation from India and China too, but that innovation is not a world changing or niche changing innovation. Even though there are improvements in Indian and Chinese schooling,US is adapting to the global human resource challenges there is no alternative to Berkeley, Ivy.lg or MIT. Sorry to say asian higher education is not simply in the same league of what the US has to offer, and this is where real innovation (world/niche changing) takes material shape.
cause we are so accustomed to do what we are told, when there is no one telling us what to do, a lot of us will get lost and then mess things up or just follow suit, go with flow, nothing more than mediocre.
Indian education is wrong. Technical education is more important. China,Japan and South Korea have skilled workers. Bangladesh Pakistan and India need technical education.
I started at age 3. We just learned how to write lines and letters and numbers and our name. Then we sing a lot and play with other kids and learned to share toys. Then I graduated college by the time I was 19 years old.
Good interview, my advise is the American attitude and lifestyle causes the downturn, elegant, lazy and too much entertainment: sex, drugs and guns and low paid teachers and etc. Ripped-off schools and stupid student loans for the corporation. The leader is a fake and that makes it worse. Time to restructure, reengineer America. Bless you.
That guy on the left,if you dare to learn in China 's middle school and high school for 6 years.i am really curious if u will still say like now.4 days vacation per month in high school.believe me,u won't like that
The problem is very bad teachers. We don't need all this bad teachers. Teach kids at home. There is a lot of resources on the internet and supplies at little red school house. I taught myself how to read and write ✍. So called teachers would not help me, so I did it by myself.
As someone who had worked in education for over four years in China, this is literally the dumbest thing I have EVER seen and I am embarrassed this was put on public news. Just EMBARRASSING.
zhiduoxing 1 Maybe you could lay out "the truth's" you think he is speaking point by point. That would make it easier to explain to you how wrong this guy is
2 yr olds in school full time is ridiculous. Speak for yourself, my children are home with their family not infront of the tv all day and they know more than kids in preschool
thats true and false at the same time. you still need the fundamental skill and knowledge to build up. Its like saying you wont be a engineer if you cant even do math.
I don't get it, if everyone becomes an engineer or doctor; who the fuck's gonna do most of the work? I don't know about China but only about 10% of Indians have a university education, 30% are completely illiterate, 40% never finish grade school and 20% never finish high school. Also, you went to like some big private schools there, go to a public (or "government") school in a low income area and you see exactly the same irreverent behavior and truancy that you see in the ghetto kids in America. A lot of them even end up in child labour or sex slavery rackets etc very early in life..India still has a lot of problems compared to China and US. I don't think you can find any 10 year old beggars or heroine addicts in America can you? The problem is a lot of the marginalized populations in India are forgotten and not taken account of (unlike America where they're actually focused on by the media and society), but they're people too, but the one's in power want to pretend they don't exist or look down on them. But I do admit there are still millions of Indian kids that study like there's no tomorrow but a very small percentage compared to the 1200 million people there.
I'm going to honest, Asian students take their education more seriously and most American students take their education for granted, So America lets step up our game and show Asia that were not lazy or dumb!
This is completely ridiculous, anyone who has spent actual time teaching in China knows that what this guy is saying is completely false. It's like he has read all the propaganda about education in China and then made hilarious conclusions!
Everything said is true - except the part where he says there are nobdisrespectful students in China .. I’m here to say I have met that one bad student ! In 4 years teaching high school primary and what not! I been around so to speak .. One bad student .... one .. 4 years (roughly) bad statement mr
I'm sorry to say your information is incorrect for China! I don't know about India, I don't live in India. I live in China and teach in China in both the public and private sectors. The education system here is the worst and America is trying to follow China's lead. I challenge you to live here for at least 5yrs to get a better scope of what's really going on here. You only got a quick snap shot of what you think is going on. Oh yeah that test is fake, what I mean is they have the answers.
I’m disappointed in the US public education too

I can't believe Keith Ballard retired from his hockey career for education.
Duh, hockey is not something you can do forever. Only the lucky few become sportscasters
Looking back at this 8 years later......

i am a Chinese teacher now teaching in US college, i have to say i agree with you on the society nourishes the innovation. Actually the Asian society instills too much obedience into people, and all the hard work end up being a staff, a worker, never a leader.
No one learns creativity. It is simply part of being human. School should not focus on teaching something that is inherent
You know why we smarter lol our parent threat us Hahaa

Như Lam that’s gonna cause health problems :/ pure pressure in school actually causes depression. I feel sorry that it’s so systematic there.

Yes. Just add more requirements the sooner they decide.
creativity stems from a knowledge base
You cannot write a creative piece of software without knowing how to program a computer
We are now thinking about arming our teachers over here in USA?
Plenty of doctors and engineers... where are the farmers?
Actually more about culture & philosophy. when kids did not do well in school, western parents more blaming to teachers & school systems. east Asia parents more blaming to the kids that their children was not working hard enough?? this only one of the example...

United States president Richard Nixon said: Western Technology with oriental wisdom combine. That is the reason makes US a powerhouse.
trust me I really hope what you said represents the trend.
5:31 babysitted? The kind of educators they have in California. lol.
was thinking the same thing lol
India is a sub-continent. Each state speaks a different dialect and differ religiously & culturally also.
West or east it dont matter, if they can join together and learn from each other and incorporate the benefits of both cultures think of what we could do.
I like the way americans are questioning about the differences, at least something is getting done

Its like a study pressure. Mind set in India only study nothing else.
Very interesting. Also parents definitely want their kids out of the house for longer, LOL.
Surely I will give 2 points more for Chinese Education.

I am this is really old, but it just seems that everybody is looking at nr 1 without taking a look at how they top 5 are doing or top 3.
Indian are good for super power on earth. god bless her.
Developing nations like India and China cannot afford to have great big start ups, Sergey Brins and people like Jefffery Archer and Rowling.
Western Technology with oriental wisdom combine. That is the reason makes US a powerhouse.i agree
I mean ... you need a definition of 'smart'. What is smart ? Creativity ? Technical competency ? Maybe your answer is yes, but all of them are based on the amount of knowledge you have mastered. Great ideas don't come out of nowhere, they always have a solid knowledge background as a base ...
Great video!
u.s lacks in math due to separation of math topics but in india it's math only
2:03 shocked me..
Or don't have encounters until college.
Look at it Lol .
Its an to compare Chinese education system to United States and Indian education . One that is for money and one that is there for a civilization .
You should see China now.
My Dear friend,
Someone said every child is a born genius...
Junior high is long. It's for the non-weak.
Dreams are dreams until you do something on it.
Kids’ fun is to learn.
For now but we'll see in a decade or two..
Enjoying is lovely. Just remember parents/exercise/everything_hated.
"Maybe just maybe they will listen". More like "Maybe just maybe they will not listen and start a protest"
cause we are so accustomed to do what we are told, when there is no one telling us what to do, a lot of us will get lost and then mess things up or just follow suit, go with flow, nothing more than mediocre.
Joe Rogan is more famous than "the Baseline killer."
Indian education is wrong.
Technical education is more important.
China,Japan and South Korea have skilled workers.
Bangladesh Pakistan and India need technical education.
KG at age 2?
Where the hell is this?
I started at age 3. We just learned how to write lines and letters and numbers and our name. Then we sing a lot and play with other kids and learned to share toys. Then I graduated college by the time I was 19 years old.
Milken ha?
Yet all the top engineers, scientists and mathematicians come from USA
..False
and when we graduate, the best option is going to American Collage
What happened to your sense of grammar?
Good interview, my advise is the American attitude and lifestyle causes the downturn, elegant, lazy and too much entertainment: sex, drugs and guns and low paid teachers and etc. Ripped-off schools and stupid student loans for the corporation. The leader is a fake and that makes it worse. Time to restructure, reengineer America. Bless you.
That guy on the left,if you dare to learn in China 's middle school and high school for 6 years.i am really curious if u will still say like now.4 days vacation per month in high school.believe me,u won't like that
realy curious in china
Deaths/injuries happen.
The problem is very bad teachers. We don't need all this bad teachers. Teach kids at home. There is a lot of resources on the internet and supplies at little red school house. I taught myself how to read and write ✍. So called teachers would not help me, so I did it by myself.
Ah i think need is the factor here
5:30 "are baby-SITTED..."
And this guy's an educator?
Results. Who has them.
Chinese Education is Better but Amererican´sUniversities are the Best!
As someone who had worked in education for over four years in China, this is literally the dumbest thing I have EVER seen and I am embarrassed this was put on public news. Just EMBARRASSING.
I've been in Taiwan for over 5 years and this is just laughable. How could this guy get literally every point ass backwards?
Chinese are hard working student. More disciplined and more respectful to the teacher.
zhiduoxing 1
I don't disagree with that.
Why would you think this is embarrassing? He is speaking out lots of truth
zhiduoxing 1 Maybe you could lay out "the truth's" you think he is speaking point by point. That would make it easier to explain to you how wrong this guy is
2 yr olds in school full time is ridiculous. Speak for yourself, my children are home with their family not infront of the tv all day and they know more than kids in preschool
This did not age well
chinese education: all students are bot
thats true and false at the same time. you still need the fundamental skill and knowledge to build up. Its like saying you wont be a engineer if you cant even do math.
Asian are great
Keith Ballard a real nothing more.
Look up some statistics. Real ones.
@ Ron jionas Ummmm so where did these "White Americans" come from?? I think they came from someplace called Europe. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Our kids need to grow old and learn skills for the future. Otherwise, the US will be fall behind! We are the powerhouse of SPORTS!
The left guy, since you like China education so much, why not try Gao kao, special local product in China ?
I'm going to honest, Asian students take their education more seriously and most American students take their education for granted, So America lets step up our game and show Asia that were not lazy or dumb!
Our skools are fine its the military thats messing up
This is completely ridiculous, anyone who has spent actual time teaching in China knows that what this guy is saying is completely false. It's like he has read all the propaganda about education in China and then made hilarious conclusions!
Well the U.S. teaches neither rote memorization nor critical thinking
i donot like chinese eduction
Everything said is true - except the part where he says there are nobdisrespectful students in China .. I’m here to say I have met that one bad student ! In 4 years teaching high school primary and what not! I been around so to speak .. One bad student .... one .. 4 years (roughly) bad statement mr
Did the bad student open fire and kill many or stab someone? No. Then that is a fine student by American standard.
