Im a senior in high school and I love how I can remember the amount of times people would do all of this and the amount of equipment that was poorly treated. Takes me back, also Shepherds Hey is a great song. It was so fun when I played it. (for anyone Shepherds Hey is the song being played between each thing)
I quit band in seventh grade, but I remember it well, and this video is so nostalgic. The parts with saying to tiptoe over the cases and with the brass blasting were most memorable, not gonna lie. I played in brass, and my eardrums would be lucky if they weren’t bleeding at the end of the lesson because I was right near the tubas just trying to quietly play my euphonium.
I have been a band director for 25 years, teaching all levels of band grades 4-12. This is spot on!!!! I am currently the only band director in the Jim Thorpe Area School District in northeast Pennsylvania (Poconos). I have 43 beginners this year. There’s a special place in heaven for folks like us.

As an ex-trombone player (band started directly after lunch in elementary and I didn't want to get food in my trombone) that is 100% why you should clear out before brass begins to play. (even though I was the only trombone player among woodwind and a few trumpet players)
I’ve had all of those stand issues except the broken one. Also that assembled flute and those broken reeds pained me more than anything despite not being a woodwind player.
I'm an orchestra geek, but this is still very relatable with picking the right stand, coming up with excuses, leaving the cases sprawled out everywhere, blaming the instrument for our lack of practice, etc. Lol the bathroom one is definitely true, though the conductor's I had were strict and told people to either wait after reversing a song or until someone else is done going.
The only problem with having a trumpet is I can't assemble my instrument incorrectly. I remember one kid put a penny in his alto sax when we were warning up for our concert that night and it came out while we were playing and our band teacher said, "I don't know who that was but parents one of your kid is making money!" We all found it funny and the kid had forgotten he put it in there. Ahh good times. Also 3:52 headphones users beware.

I love this! I remember getting ready to play with the band and tried to adjust my music stand; the flat part of the stand, as I pulled up, came apart! Memories!
Ok this reminds me of 6th grade. We were playing a Chinese song, and one of our saxs (I’m a clarinet btw) said “it sounds like a Chinese song” the whole class just erupted in laughter, myself included. We still tease him about it to this day, and it’s been two years. 😂 And the time in 7th grade a different band director had to teach my class bc our band director wasn’t here, actually played this electric piano to how he felt. It isn’t the best thinking about this when your playing something Samba Le Le. 🤣🤣
Im a cellist but i can HEAVILY relate to the tiptoe around the cases one. There are 3 cellists in a tiny room and there is NO space for us to unpack. Also last year we had 5 but in a bigger room. We put all of them in one area. Was a nightmare to step around them.
0:55 The flute underneath him made me cringe so hard. Also almost everyone in my sixth grade band class snuck their phones in and hid them on the stands
This kid in my band class recently switched to bass clarinet and so whenever he messes up we always have to restart so he can get it right. The thing is, he always messes up when I, as a flute, have 11 measures of rest.
When people started breaking their reeds, I mentally screamed cause I'm a clarinet player who needs a reed to play and it just hurts to see perfectly fine reeds just break
When tuning, my whole class had a running joke where every trumpet would just blast- it was great! (Especially when me and all the higher ranked trumpets did it lol)
Where I live middle school doesn’t exist! Just elementary considers grade k-8. I graduate this year and hope to be in band in high school if everything is normal again! Ok I have a question I want to ask my director if I can play bass clarinet. But I asked for a French horn earlier in the year and I got one (it’s now my main instrument) then I play trumpet in jazz band. So if I got a bass clarinet I would have 3 instruments. And she never really says no but kind of blows me off. And I feel like I’m making her annoyed (she’s a really calm and nice teacher) anyway I just don’t know how to ask her. I would like your advice like should I make a deal with her for example if I want one at the end of the month still I can try it. (That might work). Idk what do u think is a good way to ask her or convince her.
Is regular Clarinet an instrument you have already played? If not, I would wait until the end of the school year then ask I you can practice Bass Clarinet over the summer. Otherwise it is a question of whether she needs Bass Clarinet more than French Horn.
