Bert "be home" Blyleven, as Chris Berman affectionately called/named him, arguably had the best curve ball in the history of MLB, that thing was just viscious...
0:18 - Yellow jacket, that's me! My glasses fell off when I jumped off the Pirates dugout. I am running to the mound and putting them back on. What a great feeling to have done that. I was 16... Loved those '79 Buccos!
Ha! That's awesome! A buddy of mine ran on the field after the final out of Game 7 of the 1975 World Series and stole the on-deck circle 🤣. The closest I came to anything like this was running on the field after the Patriots clinched a playoff spot in 1985 and we tore down the goalposts. Fun memory...since that ended up being their first Super Bowl team.
I was 21 years old and was one of the people running onto the field after the game.. Definitely a Bucket List moment for me at the time.
my dad was 15.
did you get in trouble for running on the field?
jgjim676 Cool. I just want to see the Pirates win a playoff series in my lifetime. Seems like at age 36, seems like it's becoming less and less likely that I'll live long enough to see that.
M.S. Photography. Didn't get in trouble. There were too many of us.. lol. Security let us have our fun and after about 15 minutes we were wore out from acting crazy, and eventually cleared the field.
crowtservo. I hope some day the younger generations of Pirate fans get to experience what I did in the 1970's. (6 division titles, 2 World Series and 3 second place finishes in just 1 decade). With the current ownership group, it is highly unlikely you will ever see a championship. You may see contending teams from time to time, but the overall goal of Bob Nutting is not winning championships. Very unfortunate.
Those hats will never have a cooler competitor. They nailed it with those lids.
Those pillbox striped hats worn by many teams were originally just to commemorate the US bicentennial in 1976, but then the Pirates designed a set of uniforms around them
That was a great Pirates team.
"It's lights out Geronimo" - Great line and that was the end of the Big Red Machine!
Although in 1981 they had the best record in the league but did not qualify due to the modified playoff format
idiot
"he strikes out geronimo"
I was 8 days old....what a glorious time to be alive.
This marked the end of the Big Red Machine Era!
Joe Martin lol then they returned the favor in 1990😉
It was Joe Morgan’s last game in a Reds uniform.
Actually, they had the best record in baseball in 1981 and were competitive in 1980
bobby g is right...1981 was the last year of the Big Red Machine. They had the best record in the NL, and 5 of the 8 Red Machine members were still on the team.
@@WelshKnight1066 maybe they meant the original 8. I think geronimo wasnt on the original 8 and rose and morgan had left for houston and philly.
Bring back The Days of Daytime Baseball during the Postseason!
Why? So people with jobs can't watch game????????????????z
@@vicepresidentmikepence889
On Saturdays and Sundays. That game was played at Daytime because MLB wanted to show Game 3 of the ALCS between the Baltimore Orioles and the California Angels, played in Anaheim, later that night. These games was played on a Friday. Angels won that game and forced a Game 4 of the ALCS.
Game 4 was played the next day(Saturday) with the first pitch thrown between 12:00 and 12:30 P.M., Anaheim Time. That’s what I am craving for today.
All Postseason Baseball Games to be played at Daytime on Saturdays and Sundays, just like it was back then.
Hard to believe this was only 7 years before Barry Bonds debuted
We have two votes for BEST PITCH EVER!
Bert Blyleven had one the best curve balls in baseball history.
39th Anniversary bump. Saw two of these (and WS, too, of course) before graduating high school. Hoping to see another of these, the last two were the crowning moments for two Bucco icons.
I remember that series well. When Blyleven's curve ball was right, it was virtually unhittable.
Yinz knows that was a wild night at the Eat N Park!
I'm sure they served up a lot of grilled stickies and ice cream.
There was no doubt about it, we had them all the way. RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER!
Good Lord, what a vicious curveball!
If it weren't for the Cincinnati Reds in the 70's, the Pittsburgh Pirates would've been the best National League team in the decade...
Indeed. Just like the Steelers owned the Oilers in the late 70’s.
They both won two WS, even though the Reds are more celebrated because of the "The Big Red Machine."
You mean except for the Dodgers lol. Not even close
that curveball was a thing of beauty
I was there! Running around on the field!
'79 was definitely the Bucs year, And they would go on to prove that against Baltimore.
Just like what they did in '71.
when they acquired Bill Madlock which made a big difference on their roster.
I was 10 years old for this game and remember it vividly. I had just come home from finishing my afternoon paper route. Living in the Boston area...I naturally hated the Reds (from my '75 memories).
Blyleven had a wicked curve ball!
What a day! What exciting and absolute Best baseball memories 1979 hold for me....
I watched that game at the barber shop. Why I remember that, I'm not really sure.
Best. Pitch. Ever.
CTubeMan - Man, that was a nasty breaking ball.
Milo Hamilton, then the Pirates' announcer, on the call. In those days the teams' local TV stations were allowed to do their own broadcasts for the LCS round.
Till Ted Turner got into the mix with his superstation.
The Reds just petered out against the high energy Pirates that year.
I miss the days of euphoric crowds that celebrated on the field after big wins. That was commonplace in baseball until maybe the mid-late 80s. Fans just aren't that into it anymore 😴
The Pirates defeated "The Big Red Machine" without Pete Rose, Don Gullett, Tony Perez and Sparky Anderson as their Manager.
Nasty pitch.
Looked like it fell off a table. Nasty bender!
The telecast of this game wasn't shown in Chicago for one huge reason. It was played simultaneous to Pope John Paul II's mass in Chicago's Grant Park. www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-pope-john-paul-grant-park-crowd-htmlstory.html As an Orioles fan, was glad to have watched the ALCS Game 3 later that night despite it being a loss.
This is awesome. Anyone have a link to the entire game?
Wow what a yakker!
Shocking Geronimo didn't need knee surgery after that last pitch.
Back when fans could storm the field and be free. Now I live in lame 2015, where people are lame and boring. I would give my right arm to live in the 70s, everything looked much more fun.
A black guy who wants to live in the 70s. SMDH
yuliya9999 wtf dude? I hate racists
yuliya9999 maybe that’s not what you’re implying though
My sister and I stormed the field (with everyone else) at Shea on Sept. 17, 1986, when the Mets nailed down the NL East. She still has a clump of dirt from the outfield. Keeps it in a terrarium.
We Are Fam-a-leee!!
I know it's been a long time since the Pirates were in a world series. However I have always questioned their world series magic If the Pirates of the present were to overcome all the odds against them, would they still be able to come back from a 3 games to 1 deficit and win in a game 7 like they have five times before?
Who are they taking on world series
Filthy curveball, had Geronimo bailing.
Oh how the great teams the pirates had in the 70's and talent. Before free agency and their not spending any money and now nothing but a glorified minor league team that develops player's for baseball's big spenders to keep tv ratings high.
