In the Mauritshuis's Girl with a Pearl Earring, the contrast between the brightly lit figure and the surrounding dark background serves the important function of projecting the Girl forward in space, bringing her closer to the viewer and enhancing her three-dimensionality. 2:00 [SpringerOpen]

This one caught my eye a few years back. Not even sure why; but apparently it did many other people too. Although they mention it’s not a portrait, I can’t help but think it’s based on a young lady Vermeer caught a glance at somewhere in passing. If you don’t have too much anxiety to only stare ahead or look at the ground, moments like that happen in public. And sometimes they stick in your mind for a while.

Watching these makes me want to learn how to paint w oil for portraiture

The two paintings are made on canvases using oil paints. The differences between these two paintings are that they were painted in two different periods, and both have different stories. Unlike the Mona Lisa, Girl with a Pearl Earring is not a portrait but a tronie, a Dutch term for a character or type of person. 1:35 [Britannica; EduBirdie]

Thank you for sharing. It's a spectacular painting. Question: the size of the painting is 44.5 x 39 cm, correct? ----- not inches.

This painting actually proves there were beautiful Dutch women in the 17th century. The other Dutch masters.....mwah.

Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of his most famous paintings, but very little is actually known about it. The girl herself is a mystery who has inspired both a novel and a movie speculating on her true story.
Girl with a Pearl Earring, oil painting on canvas (c. 1665) by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer, one of his most well-known works. It depicts an imaginary young woman in exotic dress and a very large pearl earring.
The painting has captivated so many people throughout history, drawing unprecedented crowds to The Mauritshuis, the art museum in The Hague, Netherlands where it is now housed. It became iconic for the distinct position of the girl, her enigmatic gaze, the colors and the delicate quality of the light. 2:24 [Britannica; NPR; Widewalls]

The earring is actually not a pearl but a "zilverglas" bulb.

Forgive my ignorance on these points, but they comment on this painting inspiring both a movie and a novel. What movie? What novel? Help! :)

Someone wrote a book about the girl with the pearl earring and it was turned into a movie quite recently, starring Colin Firth and Scarlet Johansson. Al three (painting, book and movie) are of the same name

I haven´t had the chance to read the book yet, but the movie is very good. It might not be historically accurate (since the identity of the girl is still unknown), but it provides a very interesting, believable theory in that regard. I recommendwatching it!
