Can this method be done on Creeping Juniper in Winter when doing the wiring ? Wouldn't trunk splitting kill the tree ? Appreciate your kind reply and advise
I guess its also possible to tie it down but in my opinion too it won't give the right shape, i mean is it possible to tie it twice in 2 different places? Is the result the same?
Hello, great video!!! I came upon your video and have a question. Can I split a straight trunk on a shorter tree? Will I have more difficulty because I wouldn’t have as much leverage to bend it?
Does anyone know, can you split the trunk of a Hinoki Cypress to thicken it? I read somewhere that splitting should only be done with a select group of trees, but it was not clarified which ones.
This is going to be an unusual question but where does the music come from for the videos? I’d like to add some of this to my outdoor garden. Can you provide me with names of cd’s or artists that were used in your shows? My partner and I watch your videos frequently and we are more times than not amazed at the outcome of the work. Sometimes it is very drastic, but anyone who understands bonsai well enough knows that danger often lives right next door to beauty.
Is it ok to split the trunk right down to the roots to get a wider root flare? I have a beautiful Alberta Spruce in my front yard with a 35mm thick trunk (1.5 inches) and would like to dig it up and try to bonsai it. The only problem is that the trunk has no taper and it looks kinda like the tree in this video. I'd want to split it right down the middle and not sure if that can be done. Perhaps there is something we can use to apply to the exposed inner sapwood/heartwood to prevent infection/infestation.
Definitely possible but do at the start of the growing season so that it has all season to recover. Don't prune or mess with the roots until the following year and keep out of extreme temps for a couple of months after the work. Only do it if the tree is very vigorous and of the best health
Maybe its just me but, i think this tree did not come out with a big difference on before and after picture. But great to know this tricks for bending difficult trunks. Thanks for sharing. -Norway
when does one need to wrap rafia string onto the trunk beneath the wire? I have seen this in other videos when there is strenuous bending... Thanks for video again
Damaging in what sense? As he stated as long as it's cut vertically, it doesn't interrupt the layer of tree which transports nutrients to the whole tree.
Richard Hodkinson great question, I was wondering the same thing.being that some trees respond differently to just pruning, are there certain species that don’t respond as well to splitting.
@@spacecoastbonsai1421 you can split the trunk and put wire pieces or some sterile stuffing inside and wait until it sets then removing the stuffing material and as the trunk heals over the trunk will be thicker.
The trunk is way way way too tall in comparison to where the canopy starts. If you had wired this sooner and did an s bend or even wind swept technique.. but I feel you rushed things after letting it go too long.. please update us with the result so I can eat my own words lol
seriously ? first of all, we should have told what kind of tree it was, (name?) second ; we should have been told in first hand what you are intended to achieve(as far as style concern ) ....I think as much as, I respect this man, but I couldn't avoid thinking his primary goal is about something other than his main topic( for example in this clip, he seems much of his attention was the tool or a tool that he was about to use ).
I was at Herons having 1-1 sessions with Peter and was stood next to him as this was filmed. I chose this tree (Cedrus brevifolia) as one I'd like to use in a literati style and he made the video to show how to use a branch cutter to bend a thick branch.
I appreciate anything Peter is willing to share. I didn’t think there was undue focus on the tool, and he certainly didn’t plug himself as the best/only supplier of tools. To me, it was more like “I was doing this, and thought people would be interested”. And he was right, I was interested.
Matt Britton yes, that would have been the case, I've no doubt I've lot to learn, but did he really really has done a good finished job on that tree ? I think he struggled with it, and I think he give up on !
2tedros That is a much fairer comment/question. I agree that he did not get a great result on the tree (although he didn’t have much to work with). Personally I would have added a few more strands of wire and attempted to get a bit more movement in the trunk. Regardless, the demonstration of splitting was useful to me. I like to encourage people to post on you tube since if they become discouraged, they might stop posting.
Could he not have used cord or wire tight to base of trunk to somewhere higher up to keep the bent much tighter as under pressure. It bent much more then the wire would hold.
Way to make fun of someone's accent. He doesn't pronounce "th" cause it doesn't exist in his native tongue. Incidentally Irish English also substitutes "t" for "th" because there is no "th" sound in Gaelige either. Would love to see how a video in your second language would sound
sam lomb see i learned someting new! You may assume tat if I made a video in another language tat it would be perfect but tats not ta case. It would be worse tan tis guy. Way worse! You could make fun of me all you wanted and I would laugh to! Just like when Spanish people laugh at me and say hahah gringo! It’s a joke. Man up and quit whining. Wait until China takes over the world in 6 months and tells you there is no such thing as cutting your dick off and pretending your a woman. WOW your world is gonna get rocked.
I had no idea this was possible. Great to know! I don't know why others here are so confused he explained it simply.
For real, you'd think these people had listened to a man that was explaining how to split atoms.
Ok, great! This is very much what I was hoping to begin.

This was fascinating!
Enjoying your videos. Thank you for all this valuable information; I am currently learning this craft.
Can we apply this technique on ficus tiger bark ?

Would you see a vertical scar once it heals?
Bark will grow over cut 👍🏻

What is the advantage or outcome or what for splitting the trunk please let me know.
Thank you so much.

He did explain it in the video

I was given a nice elm which has a couple of severe bends which are not to my taste. How should I unbend them?
Can you do this to Maples? What time of year would be best to do this? Thank you for the video :)
in another video Peter told that this technique is not as efficient on decidious trees as on pines/conifers.
Maybe its just me but, i think this tree did not come out with a big difference on before and after picture. But great to know this tricks for bending difficult trunks. Thanks for sharing.

Quad Derrick he would have been better off using a guide wire imo.
I think the idea is to bend it slowly over time, rather than all at once and have the branches snap off the tree.
@@ericbrown4761 Tha was just a technique presentation
inspiratif.. 👍
Great info, thanks!
great work, thanks for share this

the question that remains tho is if there will be ugly scarring once it has healed...
@@Homeboyvick no it would just fuse together with age.
Always good info, thank you.
How do I insure that mine has one trunk? I’m afraid it will naturally grow to have to major trunks.
What variety of tree is that?
I think it is a larch tree.
can I split that on my Japanese Maple?
Can this be done with all trees without damaging

@@sacramentallyill like I said previously other tree species not just this one

Can we see what a trunk looks like after healing?
Well. That didn't work out as expected. Though an interesting concept which I will try on slightly younger trees. Thanks for the video.
I want to know the name of this tree, please help me.
Most likely a Japanese white pine.
possibly cedar or larch
Can't it be tied up like a bow? 🏹
What is the name of this tree
What is the main benefit of splitting a trunk?
that and to thickening the trunk
Splitting a trunk does not thicken it. The purpose is to gain movement in the trunk. Don’t give false information if you don’t know anything.

But doesn't get fungus and bacteria into this huge wound? 🤔
I can't do this 2 dangerous☹️

Joder.Si lo unico q ha hecho ha sido gastar alambre.
Or you could use a guy wire, not have to split the trunk and get a better result.
Scott right you are.
The trunk was bendy enough to get loads more movement into it. I was expecting some guy wires and screws tbh

Make it wooden with the help of the Woodprix instructions.
Garbage , he practically killed and strangled the tree.

Speeded up wiring! Lol
Is this a joke of sum sort
only if you laughed
that's torturing the poor tree? :'-(
I pretty sure the tree is fine, is pruning, cutting off branches less torturing?

Several tin pieces are easier to bend than 1 tick piece
