  • MohamAna en mItil, The varnam that has become synonymous with the T Balasaraswati style, is profoundly multi-layered. Every moment of the piece is weighted, and calculated - a testament to her, and the school’s aesthetic philosophy. Here we aim to analyse and appreciate the 13 minute rendition of the piece by Balasaraswati from the documentary Bala by Satyajit Ray.
    Charanam:
    mAran kaNaigaL tUvurAn sharamAriyAi
Meaning: Cupid (mAran) is showering (tUvurAn) me with a rain (sharamAriyAi) of arrows (kaNaigaL)
Neela Bhaskar is a student of Shyamala Mohanraj. She began her learning with her at the age of 7, and continued until Shyamala’s death in 2015. During her time of learning, Neela learnt many pieces of the Balasaraswati repertoire, and was also taught how to teach dance. Neela also learns music with T. R. Moorthy, a student of Bala’s brother T Vishwanathan.
