what amazes me is that unheard/rarely heard songs delivered in the most mastery way. For instance, this kharahara priya varnam is not sung anyone other than Brinda. Though i have heard Enthe nerchina before, but very rarely heard. (It sounded a lot like Shudha dhanyasi. upon reading about it seems both are same to larger extent. MMI used to sing more subrahmaṇyena rakṣitohaṃ more, though he had sing this also before.) Enduku nirdaya is not sung much; apart from Brinda/muktha, Ramnad krishnan used to sing this, probably he got that from their repertoire. interestingly I read somewhere SSI saying it should be sung in Khamas raga Vinave o manasa is short and sweet. never heard that before apart from an equally beautiful one by MMI. Mamava Pattabirama has been sung in distinctly beautiful way. No one else sings in this way. DKP or MS had sung this a lot, but not in this way,

A concert may be for 2-3 hours. I often feel it's not worth to spend that much time on a new gen musician. I know this doesn't sound so good! I often wonder what makes these past masters so excellent in their craft! often get different answers. constant exposure to the high-quality music and access to a teacher to correct mistakes and strengthen the conviction might be one such!

The intricate finesse in the gamakas, and the extraordinary handling of cittaswaram! It is as if these two legends instinctively and innately command the kriti and the rāga sans any need for theory. Truly a musician’s musician. Stunning and reverberating with śringāra 🙏🏽

All along, it is a smooth sail in a vast ocean, calm waters, beautiful breeze, clear skies.. the mahAvidvAn creates such an atmosphere and sustains all through. tODi, kalyANi, sankarAbharaNam, kAmbOdhi ellAm seem to hv actually changed a bit, since his times.. to give tani after a serene mAlE maNivaNNa was nothin short of aesthetic refinement. UKS starts so much in line with the tranquil atmos ARI had created and towards the end, seamlessly builds it up to such a fiery finish that you hardly notice it. And TNK plays like he had taken the entire sAgaram called ARI, removed the salt frm it and lets flow fresh water only frm his violin. sripathi must have been immensely pleased with this offering frm these great artists 🙏🙏

Few singers put in as much energy into their swara jathis (musical notes) as Semmangkudi. In his age 20s, 30s and 40s, he was the most energetic in alapanas (deleanation of the 'colours' of the Raaga) too. Rasikas who knew Semmangkudi in his younger days, heard him, used to say that after him, all other singers seem 'peaceful' !!!!! He was a master of his style and his craft.

Musiri Subrahmanya iyer is unique in infusing a mix of emotions in the manner he sings, perhaps, it is all in his voice. An emotion of Bhakthi, of pathos of the Sathvik nature. Highly memorable for such emotions as well as the musical talent displayed. Mukhari brings out this best, especially, the beautiful entreaty of Thyagabrahmam attempting to describe Sri. Rama's kindness to the tribal woman, Sabari, a devotee of Sri.Rama guided by the Matanga Muni.

Those who grew up in Tamil Nadu's villages and towns especially in Agraharams in the 1920s to 1960s will remember many vidwans practising carnatic music in the 'Thinnais' (verandahs) of their houses with an impromptu audience of neighbours collected in the street fronting in the 'event thinnai'!!! Children in front row, the elderly 'Mamas' next, some 'Mamis' grouped together in a corner!! It must have been a great treat!! Those were the days of the Sadhakas like Semmankudi, ariyakudi and Musiri!!!! They practised repeatedly to perfect their music.
