Hi, Thank you for the video. This explains a lot of what I went through. Ion Plus had my Murdoch Mysteries on Saturdays and Sundays, and last weekend there was another channel broadcasting in their spot. I rescanned four times, just to get another station's call letters showing in it's place. I now have three of one channel, two of another few channels. In Central Florida it's a mess. And they did it without warning. I found a way to complain to their email address, not that they care about what the public wants, or thinks. But what happens if people boycott their stations? Nobody watching... just to prove a point. We boycotted tuna with bad fishing habits, they changed the way they fish. We boycotted gasoline when it went up over $4 a gallon, the price came back down. “If you build it they will come...”, that only works on something interesting that we want, and that we can afford. It doesn't work on everything. Anyways, thank you for your information, it is greatly appreciated. New subscriber. Please keep the information coming, it seems nobody else is going to tell us. Take care, stay safe, have a nice day. 👵☺️✌️☮️🖖 😷 🙉🙈🙊 ♥️📺
Thanks for the heads up. I rescaned my HDhomerun and found a few interesting things. First off; the Ion station has managed to cram the Scripts stations and a few others onto a single channel, 7 in all. Yipes! Also the four big broadcasters are broadcasting ATSC 3.0 on channels 30 and 33, although I can't get them on my ATSC 1.0 tuner. Another thing is that KGW is broadcasting on channel 8 as KGW-DT and channel 23 as KGWZ-LD. I have no clue about what that's about.
On the Orlando ION station, 56.2 qubo was replaced with Bounce TV, 56.3 IONLife was replaced with Court TV Mystery, and 56.4 Shop was replaced with Grit even though that is carried on another station in the market.
I hate the loss of Qubo and Ion Plus. Locally, in southeast Louisiana, we now have 4 Court TV channels, 2 Grit channels, and who knows what other duplications are in the works! Not going back to cable! Just watching more RUclips and reading more E-books! Edited: lousy autocorrect changed my words! Edit: to @B&BHFanatic1993HD I don't have to look it up. @@Abandoned4ever Just edited my post with the name of the company that bought ION. They changed programming all over. I called the station for info as soon as programming changed.
There's also a digital subchannel shuffle with companies owning more than one station in the same market. Sioux City, IA and Omaha, NE are examples as KMEG (CBS 14.1) got moved to 44.2 (Fox subchannel) and a bunch of Fox's subchannels decamped to KMEG.

A total of 26 OTA channels now, including METV, Comet, TBD, Get TV, Bounce, Justice, Qwest, PBS Kids, Cozi, DABL, Antenna TV, Mystery, Laff, and Grit.
The upcoming ATSC 3.0 change is a mess. If you live in an underserved market like mine in SE Kansas, you have 4 stations, 2 owned by one company and 2 with a second one. It will be interesting to see how this shuffle will work with the station pairs, all of the channels on UHF except one on VHF channel 13. I mainly watch the sub-channels, and really don't like what the big networks broadcast for "entertainment." About the only time I watch the x.1 channels is for severe weather.
I gained Laff and Grit TV when my local ION station dropped Qubo and ION Plus. I like to watch Grit. I pick up my channels on an old pair of rabbit ears. Grit had been dropped when Charge TV took it's place on local tv.
The digital conversion of 2008 was a chance to reinvent TV and put programming on that people watch but it is quickly dying and becoming irrelevant like cable TV because of the programming and because of the people who are buying up all the stations

From what I understand, over in the UK you have to pay for a TV license to watch OTA channels. There are actually TV detector vans that drive around looking for people who are watching without a license. However I don't think they have commercials, could be wrong though.
I just found your channel and I'm so glad. I didn't understand why some of my channels were missing or changing especially ion plus. I will be viewing your channel for more information 👍
From my own experience, the local TV stations usually make announcements on their local news broadcasts, that the station will be going to a new frequency, and that viewers will need to rescan on a specific date, in order to continue watching the TV station. Otherwise, local stations will air informational ads about the frequency change, and/or advertise the frequency change in the local newspaper(s) in their TV market.

The sub-channels I care most about are MeTV, Antenna TV, H&I, and Movies! All of these are local subchannels I receive via cable (Suddenlink), not antenna. I live too far outside of the Houston area to receive them by antenna, so hopefully these won't be affected.
OTA TV seems to be going down the tubes. I can look out my window and see the main local ABC station tower on top the mountain less than 3 miles away (3 miles !!!!). Yup. I really wish they had waited and coupled the move to digital with a system, like ATSC 3.0, to handle multipath better. I noticed a couple of months ago some sub channel shuffle going on. Some just moved to another channel I already got. Others disappeared completely. One local station, which really was just a low power rebroadcaster, just lost channels altogether. Probably because they could not compete with the bigger stations. That is how I lost GRIT. I feel that the shuffle is not over but I am waiting for the dust to settle first. Your video gave me more info on this subject than I ever had. Thanks.
As radio started to die after iTunes, etc. gained prominence, I wonder how long before OTA channels will start to fade given that internet broadcasting is starting to emerge stronger?
They would first have to gain the rights to broadcast their shows on the internet. Not an easy task with some content where the rights owners are rusted on against the internet
There is still a significant portion of the population that have limited access to broadband. The SpaceX folks (as well as others) are well on their way to getting satellites above these rural areas. Once the infrastructure is in place to serve them in the next few years and the necessary politicians are bought and paid for, yes OTA will be dismantled asap
@@STONE69_ Yeah, but the difference is that in the 70's there wasn't much of a choice. Even cable was in it's infancy. We had 4 OTA channels, period. Now there is a ton of choice and network broadcasters have to compete with and they are finding they can't. That's why "Peacock" and "ABC+" and whatever are popping up.
Las Vegas, Nevada stations took a different approach. Channels 3, 8 and 13 - NBC, CBS and ABC are all broadcasting their ATSC-3 channels using RF channel 29, leaving their respective ATSC-1 channels where they were unchanged. So their were no reshuffle of any subs. Also the current ATSC-3 broadcasts have no subs. Very unique solution.
I use a signal booster and I get about 40 channels more (including sub channels) than with the antenna alone. My antenna is only about 20 feet up so the signal booster really is a huge help!
I had something similar happen a couple of years ago. I lost my favorite subchannel programming - only to discover there was some swapping between local stations - so I didn't lose em outright though. They just moved.
Viewer: (on the phone) Hi! About your channel frequency change, I need to know what's the new RF frequency you'll be moving to. Engineer: No, it's okay! Just rescan your TV set, and everything will be fine! Viewer: You don't understand. I use a rotor and need to add channels manually. Engineer: Uh, I can't! They've got a gun to my head! (BANG)
Yep. And I assume behavior like this stems from broadcasters wanting us to only receive their signals from cable and other television "providers" because they see antenna viewing as a threat to their lucrative retransmission fees.
I own a Magnavox 20-inch Color Television, made in 2007. It was the last year that analog TV sets were made. When the switch was made to HDTV broadcasting, I bought two HDTV converter boxes for the two analog TV sets in the house. The TV in the living room broke down, and I replaced it with an RCA 22-inch HDTV, made in 2013. Both televisions are hooked up to coaxial cable connected to a rooftop antenna that I had installed in 2012. On my bedroom analog TV, it is hooked up to an HDTV converter box, and the device is fully capable of doing channel rescans, as the owner needs to do them. My HDTV is fully capable of doing channel rescans, and can rescan to pick up BOTH digital and "low-power" analog signals.

I worked on cutting cable for a couple years before my wife would agree. We are 20 miles from several towers that are grouped fairly close together so my cheap-O ebay antenna on my roof does a pretty good job. Our cable bill went from $220 per month to $80. We already had Netflix, and added Prime. I opted for a Tivo Edge and it has worked well integrating ota and streaming.
I'll miss Qubo. Scripps is just shutting down a kids channel just for multiple adult focused channels that's replacing them. PBS Kids is ok but most PBS stations have weak signals like my local PBS station, WPBT moved the other PBS station WXEL which was pretty close to my area to Miami.
So weird that PBS has a weak signal in other states. It works fine in California but CBS just doesn't.
I noticed that. Qubo is gone. I need my Jane and the Dragon. Plus that was my kids second channel to go to if hey didn't like what pbs was running.

Probably worth mentioning that if your favorite subchannel (ie MeTV) suddenly disappears you should set the TV do another autoprogram to find where it may have been reassigned. If it still fails to find your channel, you can do an internet search to find what network affiliate station is broadcasting it and where is the transmitter located. A better outside or attic mounted directional antenna may be needed if it is being broadcast from a more distant location.

This might be a good thing for me, I’m not sure yet. I only have 2 stations one of which has ION and MyTV on its sub channels. Both of these networks have quite literally the same programming, and is quite redundant.
I'm not sure what Scripps plan is for Ion on different TV stations as a subchannel. I would hope they continue to pay to TV stations to lease the subchannel.
@@AntennaMan Ion was added to WFTX Fox in SW Florida. If a person loses certain sub channels they may see if they can get that sub channel from another nearby television market.
I always found ION to be boring AF, and not worth watching, so if it goes away It will be no heart loss for me, but the one that would get me is MeTV, as it's one of the best unique sub channels there is for a non Sinclair market like mine.
Here in Canada, subchannels are just not a thing.
@@denelson83 best I can suggest is to get a router side VPN, set it to US, get a Roku express, and you can stream the Sinclair ones like Charge, and Comet for free. Plus it will open up a lot of other free Roku channels for you to watch like PlutoTV.
I recently updated the wikipedia page for WPNT to better clarify. Thanks for sharing your video regarding the subchannel reshuffle.
My prediction for the scripps networks: Every station will make its way to at least one scripp station if there is one in the market. Chicago may end up with 10 sub channels on channel 38 if this is true because it is the only one they own in chicago. Otherwise they will still make contracts to other stations.
I think OTA will become more crucial than ever with ATSC 3.0 and streaming. That combo will become the norm.

The "subchannel shuffle"...sounds like some kind of dance.
😆now I'm singing the "Super Bowl Shuffle" with altered lyrics in my mind
On the Orlando ION station, 56.2 qubo was replaced with Bounce TV, 56.3 IONLife was replaced with Court TV Mystery, and 56.4 Shop was replaced with Grit even though that is carried on another station in the market.
I hate the loss of Qubo and Ion Plus. Locally, in southeast Louisiana, we now have 4 Court TV channels, 2 Grit channels, and who knows what other duplications are in the works! Not going back to cable! Just watching more RUclips and reading more E-books!
Edited: lousy autocorrect changed my words!

I don't own a TV anymore. I think that's the best way to go.
Now that there is no news to watch, it's only entertainment and that is available everywhere.
The digital conversion of 2008 was a chance to reinvent TV and put programming on that people watch but it is quickly dying and becoming irrelevant like cable TV because of the programming and because of the people who are buying up all the stations

so, you're saying I may soon get some good programming instead of all those HSN channels I have to watch on my antenna?? that would be cool....
Yes!
My local ion station has HSN as a subchannel but there’s also another HSN station that has it as the .1 channel.
There’s so many shopping channels on my ION channel that they’re super low quality to fit them all on the one channel.
My thinking is that the government wants to take more of your OTA TV bandwith and sell it. Eventually they will take all of it.
More people are now doing OTA than since the 70s, its actually catching on for some reason. More people are going broke.
Las Vegas, Nevada stations took a different approach.
