I fully restored this radio. New parts, tubes tested, and a new magic eye. This radio sounds nice, and the FM stereo works well. Look at the movie where I give a demonstration.

Hi, I think what you have here is a B5X43A/22 and not a B5X23A. As far as I know, the B5X23A is already "bi-ampli", meaning it has a stereo amp to reproduce stereo music from a pick-up or tape machine, but is not able to receive stereo FM, it also doesn't have the red stereo indicator lamp. The B5X43A however, is able to receive stereo FM (got one myself :-D )

Zelf gereviceerd? Mijn phillips geeft alleen rechts nog hoge tonen en de buis links met het kijkglaasje is maar half groen. Ik vind het wel jammer dat ie niet goed meer werkt. Heb ook nog een radio van hey merk Graetz , die vind ik ook erg mooi eruit zien maar die moet eigenlijk ook ooit weer eens nagekeken worden.
These Philips radios are not bad at all. I have several of these models (going from b5x to b8x), and these sound nice. They really have good tuners (better than saba tuners, IMHO ... Philipes tunes better, Saba sounds better). However, excepted on the high-end models, you cannot control bass & treble the way you want. The buttons either select too much bass (which leads to distortion), or not enough. So I experimented and modified one of my b5x43a so that at the normal setting, it has sufficient bass (sound is not so tiny anymore). This can easily be done by adding 2 low-values capacitors in parallel of some of tone-control caps.
Showing all beautiful old volve radios in utube of phillips, Grundig, telefunken, NationalEco, and so many radios but what is the use without enjoying such that old radio sets and not available for purchase and so many do not know about the volve radios and their perfect working so if available seconds for purchase kindly the place of availability may be mentioned except Amazon, filpcart, OLX, otherwise no use to show such radios in utube if it is benefitted to them no problem it is just suggestion to put old items in the public they also eagerly awaits for vintage radio old sets
Hello, My dead left us a same radio before he dies. The radio is in perfect condition, never had to be restored and my dead never had to restore it but ver the time the antenna broke. The original antenna was made from a kind of rigid paper, you might have see it, if you get the radio with the antenna. Do you an idea, how can I replace the antenna with ? What kind of antenna have u put for your radio ? Thank you The restore's job is wonderful, BRAVO
hi, i have a B5X23A, and as pointed out below by Sebastian, it's not the same as this one. Mine has two dials on the lower left and right side of the face for bass and treble when not using one of the 3 presets, a prettier (imo) design graphic for the frequency scale, and when you move the balance knob there's a belt driven system behind the glass that moves left / right to physically show you where the balance is set! phew, see my video it's easier!! But there's no stereo light, and no FM stereo logos...so a bit miffed to just learn mine's not FM stereo....there is the same mono/stereo button, but i guess that's just for playback of tape and phono sources. It sounds fantastic, even if it's far from being right. The balance control does not work, and there seems to be slightly more bass from the left than from the right, and al the high frequency treble only comes through the right speaker. The green diode at the front is also a lot fainter than on this one. Any ideas, help, would be very much appreciated. In the old days there was the TV repairman on every high street who would take a look and have it sorted in no time. Today... big city big city hifi shop, big prices. Also, i mention in the video, i got a fair sized shock from one of the speaker wires where it connects to the speaker. I've no idea if that's normal with a tube amp like this....certainly surprised me.

my mistake, mines a B6X23A. Another difference, the speaker grills are larger, not square, the front edge is angled like the front facia, and they are a light brown colour.
+Netlife Could it be one of those models on which the FM stereo 30Mhz decoder was an add-on option? I have a Motorola console (radiogram) that was sold that way around 1960.
The b6x23a does not have the option for a stereo decoder, it's just a different designed radio. The balance of that type won't work, as it is totally mono design, except if you use tape or phono input, for playback of records or tape. The balance of the models with fm stereo decoder, works only if fm stereo is selected, and if tape or record player is used. Also it's the design of the b6x23a ,when radio playing, left speaker is bass, and right speaker is treble. It' an implementation of the older "real" biampli amplifier stages, where high and low frequence have there own amplifier/speaker. The em80 "magic eye", is still available , and so all other tubes of this radio's...

Stereodecoder en indicatie print zijn voorzien van nieuwe elco's, en de 19 khz kringen op max afgeregeld. Verder was er nog een condensator in de toonregeling stuk, en is er ook een nieuwe em80 buis geplaatst. Een kleine modificatie is toegepast, door elke eindbuis zijn eigen kathode weerstand en elco te geven. Is het embleem op deze radio bij de golfbereik schakelaar standaard op dit toestel?
Heb de EM80 vervangen door de EM87 (EM84 kan ook) t.b.v. betere afstemprecisie. Verder de ECC83 er uit en de 6072A/12AY7 er in met meteen mindere tegenkoppeling. Ook maar toonregeling afgekoppeld; Jensen papercaps (0,1uF) als koppel C's; de 6072A met Ra 150k en Rk 1K. Potmeter: 100K Alps. Inderdaad, ook elke EL84 zijn eigen Rk.
@@taerial879 em 84 of 87 is idd preciezer met afstemmen, en zijn ook helderder. Maar voor de originaliteit zet ik er persoonlijk liever een nieuwe em80 in. Deze past tenslotte ook bij de schaalplaat...
@@jhallo7740 Klopt, maar valt in de praktijk erg mee. Het donkere links en rechts van de EM87 balk gaat over in de donkere tint van de glasplaat aldaar. En ook belangrijk, door meteen goed afgestemd zijn met de EM87 wordt het afstemkoord minder belast. Bij de EM80 duurt precies afstemmen langer.
Heb het versterkergedeelte ook ge-upgrade: toon- en balansregeling afgekoppeld; EL84's op ker. chassisvoeten en met eigen Rk's; 100K Alps potmeter; ECC83 met Ra 100K en Rk 1K; koppel-C's: Jensen papercaps 0,1uF; montagedraad: OFC koper van Neutrik. Test nu met 6072A/12AY7 i.p.v. ECC83 (voller middengebied, prettiger volumeregeling). Voed.-trafo op kraanleertjes: winst: rustiger, gedetailleerder klankbeeld.

These Philips radios are not bad at all. I have several of these models (going from b5x to b8x), and these sound nice.
They really have good tuners (better than saba tuners, IMHO ... Philipes tunes better, Saba sounds better).

Just push a 20~50cm of Banana + wire in the antenna socket and it will start playing

EM80 looks not new 😝 nice plano radio!
I recommend replacing by the EM87 or EM84. (with Ra 470K). Far more accuracy.
