These blind tests are great and really shows how we listen with our eyes. I couldn't tell which snare was which, and I feel if you didn't reveal the answers I suspect those leaving comments wouldn't be so confident. Oh and it's pronounced Ludvig.
I’ve never really heard Sonor played live or never played them myself. But every video you guys have with their drums are great, I guess I may have at least get a snare someday. They look awesome
I love the sound of Beech and Sonor drums are just beautiful. Looking for a snare that I can bring with me to jams / gigs and use with various house kits which often have crap snares. Mostly rock/blues/country - I love this snare but do you think its versatile enough for that type of use where it might be paired with a random mix of kits?
I guessed right and liked the Kompressor (#2) the best. It sounded more open and lively. I also think you get get a similar SQ2 heavy, *kompressed* sound from it if you wanted.
Another great video! When you said "at an affordable price" I translated that in my to "low priced for Sonor, but still very expensive." The price on these is amazing! Thanks!
FINALLY a well thought out one. Absolute ear candy (to my ear it definitely sounds better in the room than close miked, but with some damping things may even out), and I'm getting LEGIT made in germany at (almost) the same price of all that made in china seamed metal stuff! I don't think I'll be able to resist long to that 14"x06" (in fact, I might be copping one next week) That 13" is also very tempting though... Tuned up high it's phenomenal, and has a wider range of usable sounds than I'd expected.
big fan of Sonor! You never disappoint with your videos! Suggestion...could you add the tuning in each comparison? if you tune in with the tune bot! greetings from Argentina!
Both nice snares, regardless of the pronouniation, (Sonar/Sonor). However, I did pick the SQ2, I could hear a difference, but maybe that was just luck on the day. Anyway, I really enjoyed the blind test, and the video was (as usual) great. Thanks, guys.
Those shells sound really nice in all tunings, lots of body thanks to the thick shell. I somehow got it right for the blind test, I just had a feeling that Kompressor was the second. It has a more open and resonant tone compared to the SQ2. Color me surprised!
Really nice video, though the problem with your miking and mixing is, that almost all snares you present sound great (at least in full mode). What I found a bit irritating with the Kompressor Beech though is the high sustain sound in medium and high tuning (The SQ2 was better there). I guess, the snare would need some dampening.
@@tinterlande , by no means that was a criticism of your videos and the quality of your sound engineering, rather the contrary. I should probably phrase it differently. Let me give you an example. I recently went into my local drum store and played the Benny Grey Brass Snare (which sounded very good in your video), but was underwhelmed when I played it myself. I then compared it with the Tama 14*7 Copper Snare, which for me sounded much more impressive (I write this as a Sonor fanboy). It is not a real problem. You actually show how a good a snare can sound + you do the comparison with the room mike (which is how it usually sounds in the practice room), which is helpful.
I can see why they'd be priced higher. The quality of materials may be higher (or perhaps just more expensive), the finishes might be better, labour costs higher if not made in China, etc. yet in the end those things really don't make a heck of a lot of difference to the sound. Have you seen rdavidr's trash can drum video? Even those sounded good! I'm thinking of "downgrading" to a Yamaha Stage Custom and just calling it a day lol.
Not sure why some people are ticked off at the way we pronounce Sonor in the US. Well for the same reason we don't call Father (Vater) a Farter !🤣 (I almost broke out laughing back in College/German). Is Ludwig- Loodwig or Ludwig? How about Hyundai, Toyota, Mazda, I could go on & on. Its marketing y'all. So he's not on Submarine and beeping away ! Its a fk'n Snare drum demo😂🤣😂 ! Now back to Biz, I was thinking wouldn't it be so cool if Tony compared the"Kompressor" with the SQ2 Sonar. Y'all Psychic or something ! Ha ha.
There are plenty of cases where the anglicised pronunciation of a foreign word makes sense (take "bruschetta"), because it's just an English speaker's way of interpreting a word using the phonetic rules of their own language. Ask a Japanese person to pronounce an English word - same thing. Pronouncing Sonor as Sonar isn't an anglicisation of a sound we don't have in english tho, it's just using the wrong vowel
Well, "the sonAr sound" is actually that unsettling beep one hears in submarine films. If that is what you like, fine, but SonOr makes drums! 🤷🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
@@justhadrums - Hmm I've heard it pronounced like that by a few Brits and Americans - But in northern europe I've only heard it pronounced with a common *S* sound and a *O* or *OE* sound at the end.
Please spell out, 'Sonor' phonetically for us in the comment section below so we can disregard it.
It's 'So...whogivsa...shart'. You're welcome.
Sō-nohr (some of us give a shart 😄)
@@ArthurDent33 At the beech too!
😆😆
@@ArthurDent33 For real !!! No wonder their drums are so expensive. Thank you for that enlightened explanation 🙏
Sounded great, especially in the higher tuning range. Amazing that the drums are made in Germany for this price point.
Couldn't agree more!
Damn, these sound wonderful! Think beech is officially one of my favorite tone-woods.
Thank you for your fantastic review! ✌🏻
❤️
I knew the first was the sq2, I think the better snare wires gave it away. Regardless those beech’s sounded fantastic.

The only difference I noticed was that the second one had a bit more overtones, but nothing major, really. Very nice, Sonor!
Love the 13x7 at medium tuning
I was thinking the same
I’ve never really heard Sonor played live or never played them myself. But every video you guys have with their drums are great, I guess I may have at least get a snare someday. They look awesome
OH lets DO IT! I’m a Sonor Sucker through & through, so I DIG this!! DCP = Top Shelf! 💯 🥁

Roughly $600, Made in Germany, simply phenomenal drums. Very impressed, but Sonor always does.
Love the med to high tuning on both!
Happy Drumming!!!
Love this - how would you compare the 14x6 to the British Drum Company Raven 14x6 - both seem like amazing value

Yay! More 13” snares!
Please make a video with the HLD 590!
- Ok found it, but it is way too short ;-)
Grt vid mr t. That 13×7 high tuning....yum!! Y r there 2 mics? High...low end?
Trying a new mic technique, really enjoying the results!
@@tinterlande sounds superb. 👌
I couldnt tell the difference between the 2 snare drums.
Both great.❤
Great review gents. I preferred snare drum 2 in the shoot out.. heard more tone, and wrongly assumed it was the SQ2.
Thank you and good on you being honest!
These things sound magnificent! I'm not surprised. "It" came from Sonor.
High tuning is delicious 👌

Holy crap that kick drum!

Love the 13“!
#1 was the SQ2. Sounded a little richer / fuller.

Great sound
Definitely need one to go with my phonic kit!
I want to know what that floor tom is!!!

Sounding great is a problem? All the character is left intact.

I've come to the conclusion that drum prices are stupid high for no damned reason.

Sonor needs to adopt Suburu's colour/pallette and cover their drums in those colours. Honda/Toyota/Audi, too.
ricer drums go faster when you put extra stickers, stripes and plastic trim on them😂
❤❤❤❤
Would it be cheating just to put ONE MoonGel on your demo snares so we get less overtones and ringing?
Any other finishes available??
Olá !
Duas caixas belíssimas e com sonoridade fantástica.
Obrigado pelo video !
Hola Mi Amigo de Portugal O Brazil :-D, Lo siento, no hablo portugués pero Sí, estoy de acuerdo, ambos son muy bonitos.
does anyone know what snare they used in their intro tag at the beginning of every video?
ok! Complimenti!

🤷🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
It is pronounced zo-NOHR
Say: soo-GNARR, like a valley girl pirate.
(Please disregard)
It's almost like you guys pronounce it wrong on purpose. Is this some inside joke? Shane also does it with the word components. He says "COM-ponents".
Sonor. Not Sonar.
Soooooooooo-NOR. So. Nor.
If you're a fan of Sonor why do you pronounce the name Sonar? It's two entirely different words, sounds, spellings. C'mon guy.
This again? Come on…
You'd hate Australia mate. But, England, would love your company.
I don't think it's important, but to get closer to the German pronunciation you'd say it with a defined *O* sound at the end as well.
@@justhadrums - Hmm I've heard it pronounced like that by a few Brits and Americans - But in northern europe I've only heard it pronounced with a common *S* sound and a *O* or *OE* sound at the end.

Can you please finally learn to pronounce it the correct way? It's not Sonar...
lug gaskets choke the drum my man. I take them off all my drums
