I am a neutral England fan, but I keep coming back to this game. As a life-long lover of the game, I honestly think this is the best game of International rugby I have ever seen. The All Blacks were home and dry, en route for the final. - Is this the best come back ever? And as has already been said, only one country could do it - France! French flair at its best ever! Amazing game. Thank you for uploading it.

Im a Kiwi and watching that game I could tell that we were not going to win by the end of the first half, in 99 I thought they had made progress from their awful performances in 1998 where we lost five test matches in a row and didnt play like a team, I still dont understand why the All Blacks are always heavy favorites to win world cups, considering how finals rugby is 50/50 dont believe me, ask Wales.

I am French and I relish this match, of course. But it has
to be emphasided that much respect is due to the AB as well. It takes two to
reproduce this kind of rugby. I mean, the only way to beat the Kiwis is to play
an open game like the French did (in the days when, I must say with great
nostalgy, they were able to …). The Blacks when in the lead could have tried to
close their game in order to secure a win. But it is not in their culture, it
is not who they are. They play out and wide an open game. Alwyays. No matter
what. This is why we have to love them. This is why they are the greatest
nation of rugby in this world.

Crap, what a game, I was only 6 but I can remember it perfectly, even if I cried a lot the next week...
AB were, are, and will be our best rivals. We are one of the rare team, if not the unique, who can stop them when they are the best.
This game is for me the best, of course because I'm French but also because of the intensity, the drama, the passion deployed in this game. For a semifinal, I think you cannot get a such beautiful match. Of course some other games are awesome (RSA vs Japan 2015), but this one is definitely the greatest game ever played in WC.
What a pity we never won a WC. 3 times finalist, 3 times beaten. The most unfair but also the most strange is maybe 2011. As long as we didn't deserve to go through the final, we were clearly robbed by Joubert (and McCaw, also, he's a great player but sometimes a great cheater also). It's incredible we didn't succeed in winning a cup (not even the first one ever) while we can deploy such a beautiful way to play rugby. The legendary French flair, the way we can win matches or not losing them when we defend. One day, we will get a star on our jersey, I'm pretty sure about this. But it's pretty hard for Europeans to win WC, only England could achieve it.
Actually, thanks to Lievremont and Saint-Andre, we have a crap team. We are happy if we finish 4th in the 6N. Seriously ? We cannot get undefeated at home in a single year and not even in the tournament like it was at least before. We have to rebuild a team, to rebuild a playstyle, to acquire once again the French flair, to start playing as we were used to and as other teams were used to fear us. It will take a long time. I'm not even sure we'll be ready for 2019. But we'll try. And one day, you'll se another games like this one, trust me

Enjoyed watching that again. Favourite world cup game, and I'm English! Almost as impessive (or at least memorable) from that time as the great Lomu were the nippy French showmen, Dominici and Bernet Salles. The only thing that's diminished slightly with time is how much the All Blacks were favoured to win. Lomu shrugging off about 5 players to score one of his trys hilighting that perception...

  • @PhilipSalen

Very happy to read that even non-French people also think so. The french forwards and Galthie were amazing and so powerful. Lamaison's kicks were perfect, each and everyone of them. You can see him call the kick over the NZ defense just before Dourthe's try. So many tackles by the french defense ! 26 unanswered points scored by France vs the All Blacks within 20 minutes or so: it was incredible !!! I will always remember this game. If I was a French supporter I would be tearing my hair out at Les Bleus. They can play the most sublime rugby and are so dangerous in open play that you cannot relax for a moment, but the whole idea that they play with their hearts means that you never know which team will turn up. The last 6N tournament proved it. They had maybe twenty minutes of amazing play against England and then utter dross for the next four games. No wonder they get booed by their own supporters.

We have won many other things, don't worry too much about us. It's not like the only thing we can win something at happens every 4 years, if you see what I mean...

      strugglingabit what have you won?

    • @strugglingabit

France is not a rugby-obsessed country. In fact, rugby is only the 7th most popular sport in France. In all other more popular sports, France has been world champion and/or won olympic gold medals (except for Basket Ball). So you see, we have plenty to rejoice about, which as I said does not only happen every 4 years at best.

God, what a pleasure to watch that match! Each time NZ was taken the lead, France answered! and vice versa. There will be others fantastic encounters in rwc, but this one had everything in term of intensity, drama and skills

I think the American public would love it (as an American myself). A lot of people I know are curious about it, they just don't know much about it. All it needs is a lot of exposure on "the four letter network", if you know what I mean. Of course, that's easier said than done.

The first part was for the All Blacks...
But the second one was completely French...
And the French wake up was really hard for the Blacks...
Lamaison was fantastic during this match...

it was Galthie; Galthie who turned it, sparked it, made it happen with the backs from the forwards play. Connection, understanding, intuition.

Nothing to do with being haters , the ABs have only won the RWC on their own soil, 1987 to 2011 is a very long time. Every other side who have won it twice have won one of them on foreign soil, England of course won their only title in Oz. In actual fact The Springboks have the best RWC record , having won it twice despite playing in two less competitions than all the rest. I would say the ABs are by far the best team in the world right now, but things change quickly and unexpectedly in rugby.

1999 in RWC, NZ loose.... oups 2003 RWC we loose hard 40-13 BUT in 2007 RWC, NZ loose.... June 2009 in NZ for a test match, NZ loose.... and NZ got a short and small win in final in 2011 !!!
    VIVE LA FRANCE.

As a French I can say that I enjoy Welsh rugby, I was sad during WC 2003 when they loose against England because otheir lack of self confidence, as well as their game against France in WC 2011. Wales really deserved to win the 6 Nations this year !

Enjoyed watching that again. Love French rugby and hate NZ, so that was a sweet occasion, even more so in that I got laughed at by anyone and everyone when I predicted a French win! Only an on-song French side could put 33 unanswered points on the All Blacks. Special mention for Benazzi and Magne

You said whatever in the right way. :) I think that New Zealand and France play well togther. France always plays their best when up against the All Blacks. I think French people like the All Blacks team also. We are the top team now, but things can change very quickly, and no one stays at the top forever - look at Brazil in the soccer!

yes and that's a reason of my passion for rugby. The history between France and NZ have made a passion like for our Crunch when it's France versus England in our Six Nations tournament. I like match with a lot of "issues" (I don't know if issues is the good word sorry). We have the best sport in the world with the Rugby no ?

What a enjoyable match! I have been going back watching matches I never got to see here in the USA, only been able to consistantly watch rugby since 2008, though I became a rugby fan around 1985. Its strange I like watching these test matches more than I did the 2012 Rugby championship. Amazing! The referee actually called 2 scrum feeds not straight, when was the last time this has been called in todays matches? The scrums were less messy, with only the word engage being used. Why was it changed
