MIDDLE EAST ESCALATION: "It achieves nothing" How Iran could now defuse the conflict with Israel
Prominent Hamas leader Ismail Haniya was killed in an attack in the Iranian capital Tehran, confirmed by both Hamas and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Haniya, number two in Hamas and responsible for the deaths of many Israelis, could trigger a significant escalation in the Middle East conflict with his death. Hours before his death, he met with Iran's spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Hamas acts as a proxy for Iran to represent its interests in the Middle East and receives money, weapons and influence in return. Haniya planned and led the attack on Israel in October last year, in which his troops murdered and plundered.
For years he has also tried to persuade Fatah in the West Bank to fight against Israel. Israel has long had Haniya on its hit list. Prime Minister Netanyahu had announced that he would hold him accountable. After a visit to the Ayatollah, Haniya went to the Iranian parliament for the inauguration of the new president. He celebrated with his supporters while the assassins were already on their way to his accommodation. Haniya was killed in an air strike that night. One of his bodyguards also died. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced retaliation and blamed Israel.
In an interview with WELT, historian Michael Wolffsohn stresses that this attack has the potential to further escalate tensions and calls for a political solution instead of continued violence.
