The cruelty in their own ranks, cannibal..."pets", even the costumes, the plastic bag clothes for the slaves, the black armor that is more technical than that of any other fighters we see, Rabans whip, that one doctors mask, leather latex, it all oozes violence, sadism, pain, projecting power, ownership and hatred of others. The arena fight was in some ways the most chilling, there's the painting ritual, Feyd kills two people just as a test for the upcoming fight, orders improvements be made to his knife, he takes it so seriously, this must be one hell of a fight and then...no. Just some drugged out flunkies he cuts down with ease, not even breaking a sweat. He simply enjoys killing, he wants the best gear for it, he wants everyone to watch him, it's just a hobby for him. There probably would be... if you didn't need to be filthy stinking rich to get off-world. The Navigators charge obscene prices for space travel. The empire also practices a form of feudalism with semi-serfdom, so defection in general (at least for the common person) is frowned on. Being from Giedi Prime, their morphology is pretty unique and obvious so any defector would be likely hunted down and discovered quickly.

      @maggiethetompug1409 11 дней назад

      this is why the harkonnens are scary to me, their cruelty and use of fear has made an autocratic regime so terrible it transcends reality in its horribleness, this system shouldn't work in a reality of independent citizenry, but the harkonnen regime and society is so morally in the gutter that nobody has any sympathy whatsoever if one of their own dies, and no sympathy whenever they kill their own. The fact that there is no resistance or rebellion at the dysfunctionality and brutality of the regime and their rulers shows that the majority of the harkonnen people are either so broken that they miserably accept the regime out of fear, or they are so corrupt themselves that they join on the barbarism and actively partake and support this evil society. The former outcome is more terrifying, and more probable because of untold masses who take part in the parades and festivities of feyd rautha's birthday, chanting their support in the stands of the Arena. Unlike Feyd himself, they harkonnen masses seem perfectly happy that their rulers kill their enemies in unfair fights, as the atriedes are drugged, signifying that the harkonnen populace has absolutely no sense of honor. Basically, the existence of the harkonnen regime and its impracticality and impossibility gives me the sense that every harkonnen of their society, from the Baron all the way down to the working class masses attending the Arena battle, are corrupt and iredeemable.

    Never read the books, but I think its interesting how the first movie had the moment where Paul heard "when you take a life you take your own" before he killed for the first time. That marked his transformation into a different person. From a duke's son to a warrior. Then in this movie when he kills Feyd, you hear the line "you fought well Atreides" as if Paul still was "killed." That hit me in a similar way that now he's essentially let go of/killed his identity as an Atreides for favor of the identity he's built with the Fremen and uses his name only to claim the throne.

    I like the 2nd movie but for some weird reason I didn’t like it as much as the first one, I think part of it has to do with the difference in spectrum for side characters in the first one and the 2nd one but it could just be that there were more new characters needed for the story, who didn’t live up to the same crucial intensity as some of the ones in the first. I feel one character that could have solved this was the emperor. Also it bugged me to think if Paul had already foresight how was he about to die to Feyd, also if all the freman just wanted a green paradise, theirs livelihoods over spice would put them in there own demise through withdrawals, I just feel like the story could have token different turns into something different both in book and movie

    Technically, only Paul killing Feyd is correct.
    While the slaves and soldiers all serve the Harkonnens, they are not themselves part of the Harkonnen family.
    Rabban isn't a Harkonnen either. His father actually rejected the Harkonnen family name.
    Feyd took the name back, however, when named na-Baron.
    And then Paul killed Feyd.

      It always fascinates me how many people clearly wiki or cliff notes’ novels after an adaption comes on just so they can run to RUclips or Reddit to parade like they’ve read the books for a pat on the head. If I remember correctly because it’s been 3 years since I read Dune, Messiah, and GE Lakin was a drug addicted captain who literally had two sentences worth of text talking about him. Not an important character in the books and wouldn’t be an important character to drop in the movie. Also not a character anyone who read these books would remember in 1000 years. You just googled info of the novels, picked a random name no fan of this series would ever know off hand, and threw it in the comment to look like you know something smh. No one’s impressed

    Edit: I didn’t realise Feyd has tattoos

      I mean the house harkonnen is a royal family, but the term “harkonnen” can be applied to anyone hailing from the planet of Geidi Prime, possibly due to the fact that they look different from most people due to the environment of their planet

    A lot of the Harkonnen aides are pretty slow learners. They don't seem to notice that giving your superior backchat usually means they'll kill you on the spot.
