  • This X’s and O's MicroTraining breaks down clearing into its important parts, teaches key drills, and explores important principles in multiple clearing and riding scenarios.
    Basic Rules of Clearing:
    1. Don’t sub your short sticks during the clear. Make them to off bench side and clear it!
    2. Don’t clear the ball up the bench side until all subs have occurred.
    3. In the 3v2 DGD situation, the goalie must come ball side and communicate “Goalie, goalie, goalie!” Or “Over, over, over!”
    4. If you’re open down the field, come back for the ball.
    5. Identify the “Mike” midfielder
    5. Don’t throw the ball to the “Mike” midfielder from inside your own box
    6. The midfielder backside form the ball stays on the side
    7. When a defender runs the ball over, an extra midfielder must stay onside.
    Basic Clearing Terminology:
    • “Over": the term for telling a defender to throw it over the top to the defender on the other side of the filed
    • “Goalie” the term for giving the ball to the goalie
    • “High and Away” the term for the diagonal pass across the field from defender to midfielder that occurs when teams are great at bumping their midfielders ball side like foosball men
    • Release: the defender in the middle 15 yards from the goal line, who is the open outlet in an early “3 down” ride
    • Stretch: the midfielder who takes his man to the far restringing line to open up space for the clear
    • “Step over” the action of getting open over the midfield line when guarded by the attackman.
    • - “I’ve got the Mike” identifying that an attackman is guarding the midfielder who will then be able to “Step over”
    • 3 Down: when 3 attackmen jump the D-G-D
    • “windshield wipers” the 2 down ride that moves like foosball men leaving the far defender open in the D-G-D 3v2 situation
    • “Right up!” The term to throw the ball straight up the field to an open man
    • “Box” the term for looking towards the substitution box for an open man
    • Off bench: the term for the opposite side of the field from the bench side
    • Run it up: the term for running the ball closer to the “step over” pass
