@@dan_the_pathmaster7934 Sure. I can agree that they are following the steps of Led Zepp too close, they should start to look in new ways, they can still rock the style, but give it a twist. I really like their first album, since the second one was more of the same, I didn't like it, still, they are good.
The main talking point among GVF fans that I’ve seen online is ‘it’s not mumble rap, I’ll take it any day over hip hop/pop shit any day lol’ - like come on people, there’s more music and creativity around these days than ever before, ya just gotta make the effort to find it - beyond a radio, that is. It’s really sad to see so many willing to accept such a blatant rehash and admit to not giving a fuck simply because it’s not mumble rap or pop. What low standards, smh. Like fine, don’t listen to pop that’s understandable, but how about at least making an effort to stay in touch with the very large amount of underground, original rock releases coming out. Have played in rock bands infinite times more than I’ve rapped, but I still absolutely love the genres of both hip hop and rock, and there’s amazing new stuff coming out all the time (mixed in with a sea of absolute shite, like any widely followed genre these days obvs) that actually pushes the boundaries instead of playing it as safe as GVF do And I’m not 100% that GVF are necessarily playing it safe, but they look super limited by the narrow genre of bands they are reinterpreting, so I really really hope they can evolve their sound beyond this, they have the talent to.
It kind of reminds me of the hate Disco got back in the day... One band I'd have liked to see make it big was Vortex from Croatia. Sadly, they broke up so I have to keep looking.
I also really hope that King Gizzard gets more popular as time goes on considering they always have something new to do on each album. But they might be too odd for people who really like Greta.
I dont mind some Rap, my 17 year old son listens to.I also don't mind this band,, the guitarist, bass and drummer are good,,,,but I cannot get past the singer.Once he starts singing,,,, or should I say screaming it just ruins the whole song for me.I would probably like GVF if they had a singer who could actually sing and carry a tune.
Rap nowadays is just a bunch of spoilt rich man children mumbling to sampled trap beats....I wish I could just get into the mindset of someone who actually thinks that it's musical or good in anyway. Also I'm 20 rap is going through its nu metal phase, but the majority of rap fans are just people following trends so they don't even notice how bad it is
I think I pissed off a friend by saying Greta Van Fleet will never be 1% as popular as Zeppelin, and that whenever I hear them it just make me want to shut it off and listen to Zeppelin instead. I stand by my statement.
I swear Julian Casablancas fell over a speaker on SNL when The Strokes performed Take It or Leave It, one of my favourite videos tbh it's so funny and still a great performance.
No wonder rock is dead on mainstream today. When a new band appears and start making any or a little sucess poeple bash then like no tomorrow, i don't see the same thing happening with rap or hip-hop, even when the group is terrible. Rock is dead thanks to the "fans".
Everybody wants to roast them on the guitar forums as well, but then b!tch like no tomorrow that guitar/drum/bass centric music is no longer in the mainstream. "Rock" fans are very fickle.
In my opinion, i feel like rock/metal today is dead and fucked cus we got bands who cant create original sounds. The last known original era of rock and metal was when nu metal came in. Bands experimented with different sounds pushing and evolving the sounds we still hear today. When have we ever said hey i like this one band cus they sound like that other band? Never. Cus no one likes unoriginal sounds where people blatantly regurgitate a sound from someone else. Its copying and it lessens the value of their craft by a shit tone. Copycat bands are too prevalent today. This is why we have had no big bands for the last decade.
Rock is "dead" because all of the experimenting being done with it isn't mainstream friendly, so only people who really care about rock music give a shit. Those same people who like stuff thats trying to be original are the same people who don't like Greta van fleet and point out how uninspired they are, the mainstream is continuing to eat them up more and more, so I can't say I've seen this way that the fans are killing its mainstream chance, the fans just don't want Led Zepplin 2 electric boogalo
If you listen to robert plant at this age it really isn't even close at all. All of the zeppelin guys blow these dudes away in terms of talent, musicianship, and showman ship. Also, greta van fleet dress like caricatures of zeppelin its embarassing
ruclips.net/video/oFkzZHIcgFs/видео.html Robert plant is a year younger than the lead singer of great van fleet in this video. (21 in this video. GVF singer is 22). Listen to how much power Robert has behind his voice. There's a reason he's considered one of the best rock singers of all time. That shit cant just be emulated on a whim
I also dislike the comparisons to Zeppelin I even coming from Plant himself. That album has great arrangements on it. Despite the controversy over where many of the songs originally came from, the writing and performances on that album are incredible for any band’s first album. The fact that GVF can’t even come close to an album made over 40 years shows their mediocrity. They don’t have anywhere near the range of songs present on Zeppelin I. I honestly think a better comparison for GVF’s sound is Zeppelin IV but without the talent or creativity.
yeah I've seen some people saying stuff like "Well these guys are still young.. give them time!".. But the thing is Led Zeppelin were young as hell when they started out I think Robert Plant was like 21 on the first album and his voice is already great.. The singer of Greta sounds to me like a baby voiced robert plant lmao

the attitude that these guys represent _real_ rock is why rock has been on such a decline - resistance to change, refusal to innovate... rock used to be dangerous and boundary-pushing. now it just wants to look backwards and pretend the outside world isn't there. trump voice: _sad_
Good point yet bands have been "borrowing" from Black Sabbath and Van Halen for years and no one blinked an eye ( ok,.maybe a few people) but WHY does this band attract so much ire for simply having a Zepplinish vibe? And speaking of "dangerous" rock hasnt been edgy since the emergence of punk in the 70s Lol! I think a lot of its simply a generational thing. When Rockn Roll developed out of Blues the children of the baby boomers were trying to separate themselves from their parents generation and music was one of,.if not their most powerful tool. As those people grew up and took over society after their parents the music became mainstream and lost its edge. I would be curious as to what an average middle class, white 20 year old male in America or any developed nation would have to rebel against?
Anybody who says that rock music is going downhill doesn't listen to modern rock. The Strokes? The Black Keys? Cage the Elephant? And yes, Greta is totally pandering to out of touch baby boomers.
I think the reason greta van fleet is struggling is because it seems they almost had instantaneous success and haven’t had that awkward finding a ground between your influences and yourself in their sound yet. Not to mention their management which is clearly phenomenal keeps booking them more and more notable gigs but they just haven’t had a chance to run the bar circuits and the early struggles of musicianship where you really polish the band into what it becomes known for
Page was a hot session recording artist by the time he was 16. Then then the Yardbirds. Plant did the bar thing with King Snake and Hobstweedle et al... They put beaucoup work in before anyone knew PB. Page had the notoriety of a prodigy among musicians and being on BBC in 1957 didn't hurt. Jimi, he says, is " many times better" than him. I disagree. Plant's stand-alone voice can be copied. That's it. That's what GvF does.
I was watching them on SNL, listening to the keyboard riff on "You're The One", and I thought, "Hey! I know that riff!" I was right. It's the riff to a song called "Thank You", by a band I shall not name.
Personally, I think that the band themselves did a good job for the most part, though the movement wasn't really timed well with the music. The thing that made the performance seem bad for me was the poor mixing of sound and awful stage lighting. If Sam's bass ends up louder than Josh's voice then the entire sound of the band is messed up, because the instrumentals are usually centered around Josh's thunderous voice. As for the stage, it is very difficult for a rock band to look cool on a stage lit like it's an 8th-grade talent show. That's just my two cents.
Led Zeppelin: copys muddy waters and like so many more blues artists Led Zeppelin: mad when someone says they blantly stole Tf?? Some rappers yeah but you’re bullshitting if you say all rappers. Also, Grunge hasn’t been around since the 90s and even those bands were at least capable of being diverse or had the audacity to sound different.
Their honest to god business model is, theirs so many Led Zeppelin hits on the radio if we sound just like them people won’t know the difference. Every person I’ve been near who hears them, says hey, I love Led Zeppelin...
“Like a high school cover band” is how I’ve felt all along. Not gonna enjoy it cause it’s “better than rap on the radio” . Also plenty of bands ripped off other bands and did it well. I think they OK, BSR was a little rough with how nervous Josh was. Especially for an SNL gig. The sound for their musical guests is always weird. At least it wasn’t an Ashlee Simpson disaster.
@@jessdayz9810 I agree. I was out of town when they played my area last year, but GVF's live shows are solid. They are at their best (imo) when they do blues cover segues in songs. I hope they do more blues driven rock on their next record.
It was incredible to see Zeppelin back together again performing on SNL and they haven't aged at all. Personally Though, I think Plant just completely sucks now.
I don’t understand why so many people have only negative things to say about others. People should just think of the glass half full. Also, Greta Van Fleet is an amazing band and a lot of hard work is being put into it.
They sounded fine. Idk what your talking about. A band that sounds like they are a Rock band from 60s or 70s , they are going to have a raw sound onstage! All bands from that era had tons of performances where they don't sound like the album. Older Rock bands and these guys were never about sounding perfect live! They rock out and with that comes some nuances! So yeah you're high off of bath salts or something!
Not to beat a dead horse, but if you really listen to Zep's The Song Remains the Same, you will hear a lot of slop and misplayed notes. Personally, I think that actually makes it more dynamic. The fact that it is live and a little on the raw side. It's interesting that the reviewer calls Zepplin's rough performance "bravado" but GvF's performance sloppy. I am not sure what the distinction is outside of overall quality of the songs. As for SNL's history of performers you have to realize that the crowd is closer to a theatre crowd than a concert crowd. Younger bands will have a bigger problem with this kinda thing. Cold start, lukewarm crowd. No big deal. Since I have written this much, I will include one more point. I am in my mid 50's, and have kids older than this band, the reason I bring this up is because, all my kids like the Zepplin I forced on them(it's dad's stereo), but never identified with Zep like I did, to them it was never a "breath of fresh rock and roll air" to them. It was probably stuff that dad was playing too loud. So while the band should be flattered to be compared to Zepplin, I can understand if they dont hold them in as high esteem or are bored with the comparison as someone who listened to Zep when they were just a rock band, as opposed to classic rock icons. Different perspective. So to the reviewer, I will close with this, as a self proclaimed music nerd you should know that ANY live performance is going to be rawer and most times, faster than the studio record. The only band I have ever seen that played EXACTLY like the studio recordings was ZZTop. If anyone made it this far...thanks for reading...this is what happens when you cannot mentally edit.
Great points, Steve. Actually, the sloppy performance you hear on "The. Song Remains the Same" is some of Zeppelin's BEST playing live. They were often far worse than that. The SNL show is no big deal, because in the bigger picture, GVF has a video recorded record of doing one great live show after another. Their detractors should go see a full live show before commenting. These kids are really pretty fuc$ing amazing live - especially when compared to how poorly bands like Zeppelin used to play live. Don't even get me started on how badly Aerosmith used to play live - especially when they were young.
GermanProudly Zeppelin was an amazing live band pre-1972. Just watch the live footage from 1970, and Zeppelin was oozing style, charisma and they were Rock gods, they looked otherworldly. Whereas Greta Van Midgets is a wet fart, they are sloppy, they looked ridiculous and they have no stage presence. Just compare Led Zeppelin’s tv appearance (and this was before they really found their stage presence) to Greta Van Fleets ruclips.net/video/IC6SwzXvyzw/видео.html
@@finismalorum9746 There is no question that this is one of the great live performances that Zeppelin gave. They were great up until around 1972 when Plant blew out his voice and Page descended into a stoned stupor. However, from 72 on, this band was very spotty live. BTW, GVF hasn't been in a position to be this creative live. No one had seen anything like this in nearly 50 years. It is a psychedelic head trip just watching this sober, let alone in the state of mind most people originally saw it live. Audiences today are not so open minded...or so stoned!
GermanProudly That is the problem, I don’t think Greta Van Fleet will be allowed to be creative. They got all their fame of off sounding like Led Zeppelin, so I don’t think their label or manager will let them change that. I think they will milk them until they get tired of playing Zeppelin style tunes and then drop them, sort of like what happened to Kingdom Come in the late 80s. But who knows, I could be way off. Only time can tell.
Im 57 years old. I love GVF! Nobody today knows what a garage band is supposed to sound like, especially when they’re starting out. Auto tune and an onstage mixer are commonplace now. Nobody knows how to “stack” the pedals and use Marshall “tube” amps and feedback to get the raw sound. It’s easier just to mix it onstage. Sad......very sad....
Kids who think they were born in the wrong generation that believe good music ended with the turn of the millennium who think they have great and obscure taste because they avoid modern music and only listen to The Beatles, Queen and Led Zepellin. Then GVF come along and they see them as some sort of second incarnation of Christ coming to save rock music.
I personally like GVF and alot of people here in Belgium too, my dad said to me (a big music fan, and he really knows what is good): wow thos riffs a really nice, and they have some really good songs. And a lot of people i know who play music, also say that they are good. It's just an opinion just like yours.

Robert Plant said they sound a lot like Led and he loves that, do you guys say they don't? You're jealous, guys. That's so ugly. Internet is really toxic.
I guess you’re too young to know what Zeppelin, the Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendricks, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Freddie King, Janis Joplin, and Jefferson Airplane (Starship) all sounded like in concert. I’m 57 years old, still rock it out. I was there to listen to all of these bands getting their start, some good and some very rough performances. These bands were ALL garage bands finding their own way and own sound. It takes time. It’s a process called experience, lots of trial and error. In the age of “auto tune” it’s refreshing to hear a new band NOT using auto tune and a mixing board to make music! I applaud Greta Van Fleet! I’ve always believed that Zeppelin had much more in them than what was produced. It’s like GVF is taking over where ZEP left off. IMHO.
The problem with GVF is that they sound like one band and theoretically will continue to sound like said one band. In between forming 7 years ago, releasing two EP's and one full length album they still sound like they want to be a knock-off Led Zeppelin. Their appeal is that they sound like Led Zeppelin. Their next album will likely sound like a worse Led Zeppelin album. If you and I both listened to the same Led Zeppelin songs, we'd both agree the best GVF song is nowhere nearly as innovative or well-written or performed as a Lemon Song or Wanton Song. LZ is over. Bonzo is dead, and there will never be another band like them. That's fine. There's a legacy they left behind, b-sides and the influence they've left on countless new bands that do something different. This band is not going to save rock or bring it back by being a nostalgia act. If anything they're hurting it by trying to sound like something someone else has done but worse than the original.
None of these artists you mentioned are as painfully awkward as the performance GVF did on SNL. Do you people still think autotune is the only thing that exists today?
Lets not forget that the way Josh Kiszka sings takes a big toll on the vocals and they have literally been touring for a year and a half straight, it's not an easy thing to do and god forbid that they haven't adjusted to the fame and aren't comfortable with these giant stages yet. 😒 I am baffled at this dudes ignorance
I saw them live her in Az in a packed small venue and they were amazing. The energy of the crowd was at a level I had never been a part of, but I have to agree that the SNL appearance was pretty shaky.
Their performance of "Black Smoke Rising" was definitely not their best. BUT, their performance later that night of "You're the One" was amazing. The nerves were definitely gone by that point in the show!
They may have had a rough night on SNL but I've seen videos of Led Zeppelin doing worse. Their reunion for Live Aid is one of the worst live performances I've ever seen.
anyone saying "rock is dead" is clearly just not looking around for new music and is stuck in the mainstream generic crap. plenty of great stuff out there today, it's just a shame that this is the kind of band that gets mainstream exposure in the name of "rock" and not actual innovators and real artists

They’re selling records. People, including me, LOVE THEM. Mostly because most new music SUCKS. They write they’re own songs without technology assisting them. Absolutely refreshing
Just because it may seem comparatively good doesn't mean it's actually good. It's like saying that a cookie covered in piss is delicious because others are covered in shit.
Adaptive Manipulator Greta Van Fleet isn’t good. They’re great live. Just because it’s not for you it doesn’t make it shit. I’ve seen bands like Metallica, Linkin Park, and Korn live. And I’ve viewed full live performances from bands like Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Who, Hendrix, Rush, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Tool and Guns N Roses. Greta Van Fleets Live shows are high up there with the best of the best. And they’re just getting started. The last song they performed on SNL takes them almost ten minutes to perform in concert. A live band isn’t always going to shine in a time restricted environment like SNL. The only reason Queen did so well at Live Aid was because they rehearsed for weeks. Bands that didn’t rehearse for the constrictive 20 minutes bombed. That “bomb” list included bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and The Who at Live Aid. Even Queen’s SNL performance didn’t go so well. They’re still one of the best live bands of all time.
"They write their own songs without technology assisting them" Hahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahaahahaha Also there's nothing refreshing about a band that sounds like a cover band and playing pentatonic solos.
WOLF STAR social trends prove that you are wrong. Mixing in the old with the new has become normal over the past decade. Today I heard a Rolling Stones song sandwiched in between a Nirvana and Weezer song on the radio. Greta Van Fleet is headlining at mainstream music festivals along with Twenty One Pilots, Kendrick Lamar, Fallout Boy, and Muse. People don’t give a shit as long as the artists put on a good show. And you don’t get to headline that soon into your career unless you can bring in large crowds and keep them. Greta Van Fleet has done that already. Hate all you want. A lot of people enjoy his guitar solos.
On “their popularity will continue to baffle me,” I have some answers. 1. My 15 year old is a fan who likes the unique overall sound. Unique to a pre-teen pop fan who also loves Queen. 2. Male sopranos are rarer and rarer. So it’s interesting to hear one now days. I would argue System of a Down singer is THE reason they made it. 3. This resurrection of first gen metal is unexpected and interesting. 4. The novelty of such young players appeals to their young listeners. 5. Old Zep fans want there to be new Zep songs; and this is as close to Zep as we have gotten in recent years. HOWEVER, these kids better make up better riffs(Zep) and more interesting melodies(Dream Theater) faster than immediately. If their next album isn’t as powerful as Zep II, Killer Queen, or supertramp they need to make changes. Final note. If this sound can make a resurgence, then why not Joy Division-type of band reboot. Black Sabbath? Stray Cats?
First time I see this band, but still I don't know why would we hate on a band made out of young guys that sound like true rock band like LZ is? Let's give them support and time and see how they will turn... I just watched SNL performance and the singer looks nervous(on the live performances he sounds good to me).
Plus, nowdays almost every artist gets compared with other older, successful artist. Like Ariana Grande to Mariah Carey and many others. Why are we taking this guys and picking on their choice and style of singing? I'm a fan of LZ and I think they do sound like them, but also do we have many artists like these guys in 2019? I wouldn't say. And they are showing rock to younger generations, even by being compared
For all the talk of sounds evocative of LZ, I think GVF is distinctive in sound and aesthetic, and they feel original to me. They are fantastic musicians whose work seems thematically fresh. They may not be everyone's cup of tea, and live national television performances are pressure cookers. I think they did a great job and people who disagree have the right to their opinions. No need to trash people who have the fire and the will to share their creativity with the world.
It's not life or death; only rock music. They are damn fine entertainment though and their hard work and talent comes through loudly :) Hope they have a long and successful career together. They deserve it and music needs them. Yes, I'm an older male fan. :D
I think they sound like Triumph . Listen to a live 80's recording of fight the good fight or something The SNL was my first listen to Van Fleet tho....
I mean, when you don't play to a click track through laptops, not being perfectly in time all the time is to be expected, this is rock and roll. People are too used to sterilized music, that's the problem.
I think what the haters of Greta Van fleet don't realize is that there hate just fules the fire. Helping make GVF more popular. All great bands are immensely polarizing. Loved and hated equally with passion is how you obtain the minds of the masses. They inspire both. The people who hate them talk about them as much as those who love them. Read many of these posts, his hate rant video led to some people watching the performance and realized it's actually not bad at all. liked it and probably went on Itunes and listend to more GVF. Which is part in why digital streaming of their hole catalog since this performance has went up drastically.
Glad to see many comments defending the band against Anthony's negative comments. The performance was not all that bad, there are You Tube videos here they perform better such as large outdoor venues and the appearance on Jimmy Fallon. The lead vocals were mixed in very badly. Anthony can go back to reviewing hip hop and rap albums as he has done all these years. but please leave Greta Van Fleet along.

Have played in rock bands infinite times more than I’ve rapped, but I still absolutely love the genres of both hip hop and rock, and there’s amazing new stuff coming out all the time (mixed in with a sea of absolute shite, like any widely followed genre these days obvs) that actually pushes the boundaries instead of playing it as safe as GVF do
And I’m not 100% that GVF are necessarily playing it safe, but they look super limited by the narrow genre of bands they are reinterpreting, so I really really hope they can evolve their sound beyond this, they have the talent to.
It kind of reminds me of the hate Disco got back in the day...
One band I'd have liked to see make it big was Vortex from Croatia. Sadly, they broke up so I have to keep looking.

Why the fuck am I laughing at this so much?
Michael J. Participation trophies is why there is no new good music
Nice try. Rock isn't dead. People bash GVF because they sound like a bad rehash.
Also, greta van fleet dress like caricatures of zeppelin its embarassing
ruclips.net/video/oFkzZHIcgFs/видео.html
Robert plant is a year younger than the lead singer of great van fleet in this video. (21 in this video. GVF singer is 22). Listen to how much power Robert has behind his voice. There's a reason he's considered one of the best rock singers of all time. That shit cant just be emulated on a whim
Well said. It's honestly embarrassing how poorly they attempt to emulate success.

K Larrison it's unoriginal and is killing rock, do you expect every painter to be Leonard Da Vinci and just paint people?
I don't see the appeal to this band.

IMHO.
Good bands that don't use autotune still exist, check out Idles.
Do you people still think autotune is the only thing that exists today?

anyone saying "rock is dead" is clearly just not looking around for new music and is stuck in the mainstream generic crap. plenty of great stuff out there today, it's just a shame that this is the kind of band that gets mainstream exposure in the name of "rock" and not actual innovators and real artists
Can you recommend me some good Rock Bands ??? Not even being sarcastic or trying to be rude lol ive genuinely been having a hard time finding some good new rock music and it is Because I also listen to new crap like you said LOL and when I dont i just listen to old rock that hasn't lead me to anything new. Im craving some good rock music ! Thanks in advanced !
@@donedone874 dude really ?? Ty Segall,Black Keys,Queens of the Stone Age. Thee Oh Sees kill it.
@@devenchinso ok a lot of those are not new Lol and the Black keys 😌
@@donedone874 add to @Devenchinso 's list Wavves, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Bass Drum of death and Parquet Courts
@@donedone874 also literally thousands of indie artists, just look around
"They write their own songs without technology assisting them"
Hahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahaahahaha
Also there's nothing refreshing about a band that sounds like a cover band and playing pentatonic solos.
Stray Cats?
hair metal next
Natasa Ma well said.
Listen to a live 80's recording of fight the good fight or something
The SNL was my first listen to Van Fleet tho....
They are a bunch of bands rolled into one just like every other walking this earth.
I mean, when you don't play to a click track through laptops, not being perfectly in time all the time is to be expected, this is rock and roll. People are too used to sterilized music, that's the problem.
Alabama shakes sounded great when they were on SNL 😉
Totally agree, that's a band that nailed the moment. Greta.....not so much.
As soon as the singer stops trying to imitate Plant then we'll stop comparing them to zeppelin
MagicN9ne Plant got it from joe Cocker, Plant was just smooth as hell lol!
Your head is up your ass if you think his NOT GOOD review is a “hate rant video”.
I don't know much about this band but i checked out their SNL performance after watching this video. I'm disappointed that it wasn't that terrible.
I think its kind of off putting how straight and white the lead singers teeth are in comparison to his Robert plant costume
Perfect teeth. Everyone is jealous.
