  • The Super Petrel LSA Is Here To Stay....
At the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo 2016, we learn that a biplane is not necessarily a piece of history from the golden age of aviation. ANN News Editor, Tom Patton, payed a visit to find out more about the Super Petrel, a modern amphibious biplane.
In this video, Tom talks with David Kyrk, the Director of Sales and Marketing for Super Petrel USA. Kyrk tells us that the airplane has actually been around for about 20 years, and they have just opened a new production facility in Ormond Beach, FL. The design started in France and has been built elsewhere, but now it is being made available at the new U.S. facility.
When asked why they chose a biplane configuration, Kyrk answered that it was a combination of increased stability and lower landing speed without flaps. The airplane is powered by three variations of the Rotax 900 series engine and, as Kyrk describes the performance of the airplane, you’ll be surprised by the amount of weight that it can carry.
As David and Tom discuss the details of the airplane you’ll see some great video of this unusual airplane in flight and operating on the water.

Why do they never list the price for this aircraft anywhere? It seems like a rly nice plane but is it in the price range of a searey or an icon a5

At EAA Airventure Oshkosh this year (July 2018) the price was $189,000.00. !!! Last fall it was $155,000.00. Either one is a CRAZY price. You can buy a pretty decent Lake Seaplane for a lot less and have more airplane. The Super Petrel is nice but I've see RC model airplanes almost as big. :)

Not anymore. NOW $189,000.00 + sales tax, etc.

They say this airplane is in NO WAY related to the older Seastar which was manufactured in Brazil and sold in Canada. Or related to the old Paturi or Petrel also manufactured in the same factory. Except for a few "bells and whistles" they are extremely similar. To say they are not related is like saying a 2000 Chevy isn't a Chevy because it doesn't look like a 2018 Chevy. Yeah, OK. A sales pitch.

The whole LSA program was stymied by the fact that it was too too much money for too little airplane.
