A fun fact about Kim; he revealed in an interview about what was going on in his head when he blew those 2 saves. He said the only thing he could think of at the moment was Mark Grace. Apparently Grace was like a father figure to Kim in the clubhouse and took care for him, a 22yr old boy from across the Pacific in a club filled with more 30+yr old veterans than rookies. Kim's impressive stats that year shows for himself and while it's tragic he blew those two saves at the very last moments of that season, it's a relief Arizona and Johnson managed to pull it off.

one of the greatest game 7s ever.. i wish it was in the yankees benefit but everything happens for a reason. soriano homer made me cry... randy johnson on no days rest to come in relief was ridiculous.. here's a story jolly. Mariano learned to not regret this blown save.. if Mariano gets this save and the Yankees win .. the parade was scheduled and enrique wilson would have been on flight 587 on nov 12.. 265 ppl died on that flight and wilson would have been one of them. since the yankees lost wilson left earlier to DR. mariano said " im glad we lost the world series because it means that i still have my friend"

I experienced the nightmare 2021 season. And, I will cheer them on in this World Series & beyond! I might be a world away from Arizona, but I will forever be a chaotic snake. Ran into your channel by accident looking for baseball history, stats and review. You are doing a great job my friend and I really enjoy your content. I remember this series well. I was born and raised in L.A. but I lived and worked in NY from ‘99 to ‘06. I am Dodgers fan and dislike the Yankees in a friendly and not mean spirited way. Still because I’m a baseball junkie I went to a lot of Yankees games in the Bronx during this period and those Yankee teams during the late 90’s / early 00s with Jeter and Rivera as anchors were unbelievably great teams. I figured the post Sept 11 2001 Yankees would steamroll everyone. I must admit - given that I was surrounded at work by Yankees fans and the fact that the pain of Sept 11 was still raw I did want the Yankees to bring it home if only to provide my work colleagues and friends with some solace. Alas the DBacks had other plans and I can’t hate them for spoiling the narrative. It hurt my colleagues and friends a lot and being a Dodgers fan I tried my best to point out it could be worse - you could be a Dodgers fan. It didn’t work but I tried. The fact that the series happened at all was in of itself a miracle after the horror of what all of us witnessed in person on that horrible day. I may not like the Yankees but I respect those players who represented a city in mourning providing much needed bright light during a dark period in NYCs history.

  • @michaelmcawesome

This was a really good video. Thank you for making it. I remember so much about that season:
First, everyone in Phoenix F-ed with the Diamondbacks then. I was in middle school and we loved the new team, how they'd gone to the playoffs in the 2nd year, the cool retractable roof stadium, the pool, their sweetass uniforms, and the fact that games were so cheap, everyone went to a couple during the year.
The 2001 series really felt like it was now or never for the aging Dbacks. The 99 playoff loss to the Mets was a gut punch. Another commenter said the Mets were favored, but we didn't think so. Dbacks took 7 of 9 in the season series against the Mets. The team we wanted to avoid was the Reds, against whom the Mets were fighting for the wild card spot. The Reds beat us like 8 of 9 times during the year. AZ felt like Steve Finley after he missed catching Todd Pratt's homer, being like 'wut?'
Phoenix had endured a ton of heartbreak in the 90s, with the Suns losing to the Bulls in 93, then the Rockets in 94 and 95, each time being sooo close and then messing it up. ASU almost won the national title in 1996.
So in 2001 when we made the playoffs, we were LUCKY to beat the Cardinals. They were stacked and had killed us in 2000 after they got Jim Edmonds. I went to Game 1 with Schilling v Morris and feeling so lucky to win with just 1 run, couldn't count on a CGS every time. I went to Game 5 too, and during the 9th inning, before Womack's hit, they tried some suicide squeeze play with 1 out that failed miserably lol. I felt like we were gonna lose again in the 1st round like in 1999. I couldn't believe it when Womack got the hit, and there was a pretty close play at the plate, or it felt like it at the time. Everyone loved Womack too. Solid short stop and we loved seeing him steal bases.
I was stunned when the DBacks went up 3-1 and knocked out Maddux in game 4 of NLCS. I couldn't believe we were actually going to the World Series. The Braves series felt EASY.
Game 1 of World Series, tough to explain how TOUGH the Yankees were. Just talking baseball, they felt invincible in 98, 99 and 2000. In Game 1, they got a run in the 1st and I thought uh oh, we're done, but then sooooo unexpectedly, Counsell blasted the tying homer. Then we piled on 9 runs in like 3 or 4 innings, it was amazing.
Game 2 I got roped into a double date to watch stupid movie K-Pax. Afterwards I dragged everyone to some ice cream place which had TVs so I could watch the game. When Matt Williams blasted the home run I was so pumped and thought OMG we're gonna win the series, this is so easy. The Yankees didn't look tough AT ALL.
Game 3 was a tight one, the breaks didn't go the Dbacks' way, they had like 2 or 3 extra base hits get caught just barely, and I felt that we had almost one with Brian Anderson going up against Roger Clemens on the road, so whatever, no big deal.
Game 4 was Halloween and I went out trick or treating lol. We came back to the friends' house where everyone was watching, just in time to see them score 2 runs to go up 3-1. A mom kept yelling "oh yeah! 3 to 1! 3 to 1! 3 to 1!" she meant the score, not the games. Anyway, Kim made the Yankees look like fools in the 8th and we were all soooo pumped. Couldn't believe it when Martinez hit the home run, and felt like dead team walking when Kim went back out and Jeter hit the home run off him (Mr November is a stupid nickname too btw).
Either way, not huge deal, we're just tied and had outplayed Yankees just about every game, they'd barely won. Felt pretty confident in Game 5 and could not believe when Kim gave up another home run to Brosius, who has a weird looking face amirite? After we lost I really felt like we could lose that series.
Hard to describe how deflated and. PISSED OFF everyone was that Friday between game 5 and 6. Kim was a popular player, we knew he was good, so we complained about him, but just the whole situation was like wtf, is this actually happening?
Game 6 I was soooo nervous for, and idk if just me, but doesn't Chase Field look so much nicer and friendlier than Yankee Stadium. I mean that respectfully because Yankee Stadium was a nightmare place, but it looks so much darker, dirtier and just a mob of pulsing screaming humans compared to Dbacks' field. That's how I felt at the time and it felt good to be home. Anyway, I was still a little nervous when the Yankees scored 2 runs to make it 15-2 lol, but it was good. It was at some family party.
Game 7 in Phoenix was the tensest 3 or 4 hours I remember. EVERYONE was watching. We left another party to head home and I remember my dad hurrying everyone into the car and to say goodbyes fast during the commercial break so we wouldn't miss any part on the radio during the drive lol, and then everyone running into the house to turn on the TV. When Soriano blasted the HR I couldn't believe it was happening, and after Rivera killed our 4-5-6 hitters effortlessly, it felt over. Grace was a champion getting the lead off single and it felt so strange seeing Rivera make the shitty throw to 2nd. Jay Bell made the worst bunt of all time and made everyone groan.
As others have said, the real champion hit was Womack (clutch playoff champion)'s double on Rivera. He laced that sucker HARD into right, and then it felt like the weight of the world was off our shoulders. Like, we had survived and even if tied, it was bullpen v bullpen and Rivera was out, there was still a chance. The excitement built as Counsell got hit (they looked at replays for like 5 minutes to see if it hit his hand), and then Gonzalez had a kind of lame little hit to get the win, and Bell did the goofy overhead double clap running home lol, but still we were all sooooo elated. It was the best series ever, hard to describe the week long roller coaster of emotions.
    Thanks for reading

There's a certain irony to this world series matchup, the Dbacks were accused of spending big to "buy" the 01 World Series (which their GM admitted was part of the plan, because he wanted the team to be successful and convince Arizona that they would be legit ASAP)...and now a young Snakes squad of many home grown talents and a modest 21st-in-the-league payroll is going against a Rangers team accused of trying to buy their world series.

As a Yankee fan, this is still my all time favorite world series to watch. The crazy comebacks from both sides, especially the ones the Yankees pulled off in game 4 and game 5, I mean it's like it was written for a movie. Just a beautifully chaotic world series.

Game 7 of the 2001 WS was what you call a true epic. People dont remember most fans in 2001 HATED the Yankees, they were the bad guys of pro sports before the Patriots took over. Even after 9/11 a lot of people groaned at the NYY going back to the WS. Then you saw a true clash up to game 7 and that bottom of the 9th was the peak of postseason greatness. Randy Johnson cemented himself as the greatest lefty of all time, and Luis Gonzalez became a hero for being the one to stop the juggernaut that was the yanks.

You can’t tell me this is not the greatest WS of all time. Sure 1991 had a closer box score. And 2016 was an incredible series. But look at the legends on both sides: Randy Johnson, curt schilling, Derek jeter, Roger Clemens, Mariano Rivera. The best pitching duel EVER. Look at the setting: right after 9/11, and the country was finally rooting for the Yankees. The Yankees are the biggest MLB franchise. Baseball was a way to express patriotism and took on a whole new degree of importance. Look at the challenge: the Yankees were the 90s Chicago bulls, winning 4 of the last 5. Look at games 3-5, 1 run games in which games 4/5 ended in extra innings after bottom of the 9th, game tying 2 run home runs. Look at game 7, it didn’t end in a throw to first base or a fly ball. It ended in hits to tie then to win off the GREATEST closer of all time, bottom of the 9th inning, bases loaded. Rivera had not had a post season blown save for FOUR years. Sorry it’s the greatest WS ever

Not taking away from the other players but..
    Johnson
    Schilling
    Gonzo
This is it. This was the team right here. If these guys didnt do their jobs in that season, we wouldn’t be talking about them today. I heard Grace say that the 02 was better than the 01 team. I have to say he was right. If they repeated in 02, they could’ve had the chance to become a dynasty. Unfortunately, Gonzos production fell the next year (yes it could’ve been the steroids, but he is and still my idol). Johnson and Schilling were still the best 1-2 punch in the MLB. If Gonzo repeated his production, they could’ve made it back to the World Series. It was fate and bad timing for the Dbacks after getting swept out of the first round by the Cardinals. I think the franchise knew that they weren’t the same team anymore and it showed after that.

To comment on the bobcat, it seems that since the University of Arizona’s mascot is the Wildcat, many of the mascots for many high school teams in Arizona were some kind of wildcat, like tigers, cougars, panthers, etc. It just seemed the bobcat was following the same path.

I'd argue Gonzo wasn't that unexpected of a one year wonder. Like Brady Anderson before him, he always had a ton of contact potential and the ability to build a power frame through a quick swing. Whether steroids were what pushed his reaction time and strength over the edge, he went from houston to miami to detroit- all a lot more pitcher friendly parks in their time- to arizona, in a division with very good parks for a lefty swing. It sucks that it was a shorter stretch, but that season was legendary.
