so if you have 2 or more par cans that are daisy chained the colors will all be the same? I've tried different hookups (DMX addr the same and then different addresses, etc) but it seems that I can just use one color (or channel) at a time. thoughts?
very true... but from my experience unless your running special lightning like a moving head fixture then regular xlr cable will do the job just fine.... both cables have 3 pin connections but the dmx cable has better shielding than the xlr cable ... but for just led par cans and wash lights the standard xlr cable will work fine

but it if is bulb , not sure
DMX and XLR are not the same thing.

Correct. XLR may work most of the time as a DMX cable, but when it doesn't, it will be a pain to troubleshoot...
