  • Chateau de Villandry is a grand country house that boasts a rich history and breathtaking gardens. Originally built as a fortress in the 14th century, the chateau was transformed into a traditional French chateau in the 16th century by Jean Le Breton, King Francis I’s Financial Secretary and Controller-General for War. Today, the chateau is especially known for its beautiful Renaissance gardens, which include a water garden, ornamental flower gardens, and vegetable gardens. The gardens are laid out in formal patterns created with low box hedges, and are considered some of the most magnificent gardens in the world. Visitors can marvel at the intricate geometric patterns of the formal boxwood hedging, which are a hallmark of the gardens. In addition to its stunning gardens, the chateau's interior and exterior are also magnificent, featuring quintessential grey slate roofs and a fairytale turreted tower. The chateau is still owned by the Carvallo family, who purchased the property in 1906 and poured extensive time, money, and devotion into repairing it and creating extraordinary gardens. Today, the chateau is open to the public and is one of the most visited chateau in France, receiving about 330,000 visitors in 2007. Visitors can explore the chateau's rich history and marvel at its stunning gardens, which are a testament to the Carvallo family's dedication and vision.
