Midas wasn't just a myth, he was an actual king of Phrygia and his tomb and actual skeleton have been discovered and are on display in Turkey. The myth of the golden touch comes from the fact that Phrygia and the neighboring kingdom of Lydia (who invented money) were both very rich in alluvial gold which was panned in the rivers especially the Tmolus.
Not gonna lie when I hear the name Lydia the first thing that comes to mind is Lydia from Skyrim. So when I heard about the city of Lydia I just thought of Lydia being the queen of the city.
Kalo Arepo wasn't this the area where people used a sheepskin staked in the rapids of these rivers with the wool up to catch the small bits of Gold being washed down the Rivers? The Legend of the Golden Fleece? I believe it was in this area the Legend came from.
This was always one of my favorite myths. I remember being told this story from numerous sources: my elementary school, books, and the television show Wishbone. For some reason, this story always stuck with me but taught me a very valuable lesson.
King Midas of Phrygia was neighbor to rich King Croesus of Lydia. The invention of coins was from Lydia. These first coins were minted from electrum which is a naturally occurring alloy of gold & silver. The smelting of gold from electrum used a mixture of salt, clay brick dust and urine inside a crucible roasted to high temperature in a kiln.
Like the subtle melodic background music. I'll forever remember it as the theme song to Mythology & Fiction Explained. Great voice! Great illustrations! Great stories! These keep my mind from wandering aimlessly during my morning commute to work. Cheers, mate!
he could have just wished to be only able to turn inorganic objects into gold, this would allow him to eat, smell flowers, touch his daughter and even wear leather gloves that in theory would allow him to prevent his power.
I never knew the story of King Midas was Greco-Roman in origin. Every depiction I'd ever seen made it seem like it started in medieval Europe (the closest one came was that it was an unnamed satyr that granted the wish, but none of them ever mentioned Dionysus/Bacchus).
He could have maybe asked that his left hand could turn things into gold and his right won't turn things to gold. (Idk just a suggestion from a friend).
For me, it's definitely not about listening to voice or anything like that. I just can listen to these *stories* for hours straight. All this stuff is just that damn interesting to me. My older cousin was right. He said to lay off the anime, hip hop, football, and basketball videos for tonight, and try listening to a few of this channel's videos. Now I'm hooked.
Just imagine if instead of turning his daughter to a Solid Gold Statue, she became a being made of Living Gold, where she was still able to move & talk, but couldn't feel anything due to her metal skin & body, and because of her body being metal she felt cold to the touch, and was strong & durable enough to smash stone without felling pain, but couldn't feel pleasure either, she couldn't even hug her own father for fear of crushing his spine, she probably would have felt like she was some kind of monster and began to hate her father for what he did to her, and without his daughter's love and the fact that she felt tormented, Midas would have still wanted to get rid of the golden touch.
In the version I heard, it was Apollo who "blessed" Midas with the Golden Touch after Midas cursed Apollo for raining golden sunlight down on the world. Once Midas had rid himself of the Golden Touch, Apollo gave him a donkey's ears so he'd always be reminded of what an ass he'd been. For years, King Midas hid these ears under a hat, and only his Barber knew the truth, but was sworn to secrecy on pain of death if he ever told a living soul. After several years, the barber couldn't keep the secret anymore, and went to the Riverbank, dug a hole, and said into the hole " King Midas has donkey's ears", before covering up the hole and going back home, feeling much better. But the Reeds on the River Bank had heard everything, and started to whisper the secret oh, so that soon the entire Kingdom knew. Pretty soon, it got back to the king, who by this point had learned some humility, and pardoned the Barbara, whereupon Apollo appeared, and changed Midas' ears back to normal.
Hello Mythology & Fiction Explained, I enjoy your great videos the artwork displayed is breathtaking and it goes really well with the narrative. Do you think you can credit the sources for the artworks in your descriptions?. It is URGENT that I know where 3:26 came from I want to see more of it's creator. TY
This is a very interesting story and I'm sure everyone would agree that yes you have to be careful what you wish for you just might get it. And indeed long Midas got what he wanted but at a terrifying cost. Very well said here. I look forward to seeing more of these videos.
That was a good video and the message is good I recently had my house broken into and most of my stuff is gone but this video reminds me that I still have the important things in life keep the videos coming
I don't know if you already covered it, but there is another interesting story with Midas. The time when judged a music competition between Apollo (or Hermes, I'm not sure) vs. Pan.
The Midas Touch has been the source of inspiration for many folkloric and mythological MacGuffins that are said to have the power to turn anything into gold, mostly the Philosopher's Stone in medieval Europe.
This story reminds me of the second low quality Aladdin movie by Disney, Aladdin and the King of Thieves. I highly recommend it for anyone that hasn't seen it!
What he should have said, for his wish, was "I wish for anything I touch to turn to gold, as I will it." (I think that would be the way to say it.) Meaning that he can still touch stuff and it remain as it is, unless he wants the object he's touching to be gold.
I remember someone telling me after being distraught by accidentally turning his daughter into gold, Midas committed suicide by putting his hand in his mouth and transforming himself into gold as well. 🤔
A classic tale of be careful what you wish for. Hence why I barely wish for anything. Another lesson of people wanting riches. As said, money can't buy happiness.
I'm sorry but don't gold have to be heated up to a certain temperature to become liquid and how do you bathe in something that hot maybe there is another way
MrGladBEASTftw yeah but heat is heat and turning solid gold into a liquid you need some type of heat and Taking a bath in it is just crazy and your saying the Bible story is mythology. I don’t really believe in any type of religion I just like listening to theses stories

As far as Greek Myth goes, that was very heart warming.
There are other variations on this myth that end less happy
But in the end, Midas got off lightly
I heard there’s also a story that his ears once became goats ears
Idk if that happened before or after
This is why I love Greek mythology…there’s so many lessons to be learned from people like King Midas!!!

Intersting...

This story is a very great reminder that be careful of what you wish for also don't be greedy.

Or just wear gloves. The gloves will turn gold but not anything the gloves touch.

i always heard that midas starved to death
I heard that Midas jumped to the river and his power was gone. However he wasn't be able to reverse what happened. He just lived on after that.
He seemed like a great king
I heard that he's gay ?
I'm lying 😢
He couldn’t cause it was his hands that turned everything to gold, not his mouth. So his servants could feed him with a spoon or something

This is different than the lost hero version of the myth.
I honestly did not know the Midas story was a greek myth. Growing up, I thought it was one of those Brother's Grimm fairy tales.
So this is what Drake meant when he said that he has the Midas touch
"Trust the Midas touch!"
I never heard of the last part before. I thought he just lost his daughter for good and that's it.

King Midas:scratch scratch
Oof
This is why when people say "I will grant one wish"
You say "Make me immortal".
At least, that's my thought.
The King this happen to greek mithology to the person became immortal but he not stay young, after many years the body deform and shrink but immortal
Κωνσταντινος Σαρδανης
I hate that kind of immortality. It defeats the purpose.
Yes i know but that is you cant have both exept if the gods ofers you both
Κωνσταντινος Σαρδανης
That just makes them a bunch of smart asses, for denying the good part of immortality.
thas the gods friend you have to be clever
He should have said "i wish to turn things gold when i wish to"
Midas should have know that the love of his daughter is worth more than any gold in the world
Crazy how many companies name their brands after myth gods and kings
