The last therapy scene got me really bad when I watched it the first time. I once paralyzed my whole body for an hour unintentionally with the psycho somatic thing. I’ve never even told my parents, so I full on sobbed when the therapist was talking to Davi. Honestly that scene helped me reathink that memory in a productive way that I never had before.
I react better to a stern yet nonconfrontational therapist like Dr. Ryan. When working with my clients, they generally react better to it also. I think it’s the difference of clientele, minorities I’ve encountered tend to prefer this vs the textbook “clinical” style we were all taught in school
I think that Dr Ryan has tried all the approaches you've mentioned in both your videos, but they most likely had no effect on Devi. So now she's taking the agony aunt approach to get Devi to bring out what's bothering her. I also feel that Dr Ryan has become attached to Devi and considers her like her own niece/little sister on some level! She did what you would consider ideal therapy with Nalini and it worked because Nalini was a mature and level headed adult competed to Devi!
What Dr. Ryan said to Davi in that last scene really was a spectacular reframe. I talk to my clients all the time about their "superpowers"; it sounds like Dr. Ryan nailed Davi's.
My therapist plays devil's advocate with me, confronts me quite a lot, and shows me the other side of things. I don't think my therapy would be half as effective if all I spoke about is "how does this make you feel". My therapists asks me that too, but often she confronts me. At the end of the day, I go there for advice, not to talk to someone.
Therapists aren't really supposed to give advice though. They are supposed to use techniques that help you answer your own questions. Nobody knows your situation like you do.
Which involves confrontation sometimes, but being careful not to give too much advice is like rule #1 of therapy. That way, you remain responsible for your own decisions and aren't dependent on someone else to always tell you what to do.
So true! I've been totally surprised by the random walk in from both seasons and how chill Dr. Ryan is about it. If Devi saw her virtually I wonder how she might still find a way to barge in?
I would love for you to react to the therapist in "my mad fat diary" I don't know much about psycology but as a person who did a lot of therapy throughout life I really liked the way he handled the issues on the show
I agree with what you said at 6:40. My old therapist used to do the exact same thing and it lowkey hurt my feelings 💀. For example, I was seeing her to learn how to I guess better cope with a trauma I faced a few years prior. At a certain point before we stopped seeing each other, one assignment she made me do was for us to work on a "memoir" describing the events of my trauma and how it affected me. I'd have to say all the words while she typed them up on a computer, and once we completed it, I had to read the story to my mom (which I terribly dreaded) and to this lady that worked at the front desk or something like that. This lady was nice so I didn't mind reading it to her as much. Anyway, I didn't want to do the assignment at all. I didn't feel comfortable going in that great detail just to talk about it to my mother when she repeatedly showed me nothing but lack of support, invalidation and insensitivity when it came to this topic. Which I tried to tell my therapist about many times and how it was a hindrance to my progress, but to which she'd kind of just brush off in a way and make it seem like we're just two different people who may have to coexist for the time (although those weren't her exact words). I man hell she's wasn't wrong, but doesn't make it hurt any less. Anyway yeah, this all relates to that part of this video cause anytime I'd try to talk about another issue I was having (crushes, sexuality, school) and whatnot my therapist would comment on how we need to discuss the abuse I faced more and make more progress with the assignment. She wasn't someone who I saw for very long anyway and who seem to only have one goal in mind, meanwhile I need someone more long lasting and can tackle many of my issues. But she tried her best with what she had, so I can't blame her too much
I think dr ryan has already used several approach to devi caused she has already been seeing her for almost a year when season 1 starts so there was already trust in their relationship
Hi, thank you so much for this video, its really enjoyable to watch your comments. I am curious about what your therapy direction is, like which therapy model you are trained in ? Thanks a lot :)

I completely agree. She doesn’t seem to take a multicultural approach to therapy

Lol yeah the random walk in is sooo unlikely! And never happening with virtual therapy. Love this reaction vid, Marie!

I really like these type of videos. It really helps put the goals of therapy into perspective as a prospective PHD Clinical Psychology student

I've always felt as if Dr Ryan's character would fit more of a life coach role than a therapist imo
You gotta do the season 3 reaction soon.
Season 3 came out today 😃👉 👈
Yessss 🙌 I'm looking forward to watching it soon! Perhaps there may be another reaction video in the works as well...
Can you do the same with season 3
