  • This is film my grandfather, Gene Devaney, shot sometime around the late 1930s (I'm guessing) in the area around the Central Bridge in Lawrence, MA. In it there are views of the bridge, The lower Pacific Mills, the Washington Mills, the Wood and Ayer Mills, the river, duck (Union St.)bridge, the then relatively new B&M station (and inside), in addition to views of Merrimack St. and the train yard east of the station.

No one remembers what a industrial city Lawrence was its downtown with its amazing stores people came from other cities & towns to work, shop &go out to a nice dinner restaurant & broadway with its theatre row! Even the poorest of streets kept their yards & homes neat & clean a far cry from what it has turned into, an urban dump no one cares about starting in the 70’s and up until today. It’s very sad, my great grandparents & other realizes that passed on must be turning in their graves
