★ BACKGROUND NOTES ★
Honest is the first 5.0 octave advanced solo I've written since Path (2017) and Skyward (2019). It is a representation of the feeling of receiving a person's honest and warm support in difficult times, giving you the strength and determination to move forward in the face of adversity.
I wrote Honest for my partner Machi Ishida, who is a world-class solo marimbist based in Hiroshima, Japan. Machi's unwavering warm support of me and genuine nature made it easy for me to construct Honest, which references themes from popular music that represent both of our personalities - nostalgic Japanese music (there are alludes to Kenshi Yonezu's Lemon, Gen Hoshino Comedy, Ikimonogakari's Arigatou and Joe Hisashi's One Summer's Day in the melodic writing) and familiar Chinese pop (references to Mayday's Suddenly Missing You + Breakthrough Day, Eason Chan's King of Karaoke, Jay Chou Blue and White Porcelain + Simple Love).

Speaking more objectively than subjectively, I think there's a certain point as a composer where you become somewhat of a pillar in the rep. For the longest time I've scratched my head and wondered what that point could be. I think I'm now coming to realize it's when your rep has a signature sound. In the same way I could never confuse a Cangelosi Etude for anything but Cangelosi, I could never mistake an Adam Tan solo for anyone but Adam. Regardless of if someone cares for the sound, it's uniquely yours and it fills a gap in the repertoire - which is impressive in it of itself. Well done Adam. On a different note, have you considered embarking on any longer percussion pieces? Given your pop music inspiration I can understand why you generally keep your pieces within that 3-5 minute range - but I really would love to hear something more long-form. All the best.
