    Gorgeous kimono and I love that obi.
    Can I tie a 'too small' (Nagoya) obi without that piece of kit? Surely there must be a way. I wonder what pregnant women did before they caught up with the west?
    [As a pensioner, there's no way I can afford any more items for now, and in Austalia, even via Ebay, things are incredibly expensive. Just the clips (the kimono pegs/clips) are around $150 plus. That would be something like paying 100 euro or 100 us dollars. It's VERY expensive. I found some from China but still... specialty items are super pricey. How to tie a short obi without special equipment would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks for another truly helpful and informative video. This library of kimono instruction and very interesting history and facts is played again and again. The BEST resource I've found yet.

    That kimono is one of the prettiest ones I have ever seen! I am a big fan of bright colours and don't really see many kimonos like that besides newly made yukata and furisode.

    me: wow this is so great, so cool, extremely informational yet so concise-- ONLY TWO MINUTES? Show me how it's done, it's so hard to believe 😭
    on a more serious note, the aunties at obon always did this for me, growing up, and now I'm learning to do it myself, but... it's really tough. I'm really grateful toward you for making these videos. They're a lovely quality, the microphone and camera are both nice, and despite everything looking like a one-man production, you can really feel the thoughtfulness that goes behind each video.

    Hi Billy! Thanks a lot for this video. I think that a guide for placing the "gara" correctly on "otaiko" and "mae obi" is also very useful, since if you use a shorter obi, sometimes the patterns moves around as well. I have a obi with this type of pattern which is extremely frustrating to tighten.

    • @BillyMatsunaga
      @BillyMatsunaga  5 лет назад +2

      Yes, totally! I am actually planning a continued video to this on how to place pattern, in which I will shorten the "how to out it on"-part. I just didn't want this video to be too long or too confusing. :) So it's a little "to be continued"... :D

    I am waiting on my sugata to arrive from Japan. It might be a while, but when it gets here, I will schedule a kimono class with you. Then I should have all the things to put together a beautiful kitsuke.

    Oh my god, this is the first instruction video where I actually understand how to utilize sugata makura!! 😅 I have had it for years but never understood how to use it. My only problem is, that I have extremely short back length, and this pre-arranged makura will sit too close to my neck... I usually try to tie taiko so that it's a bit smaller and the normal makura would be partly on top of the obi edge, since there is no room between my hips and chest to accommodate wider knots... Well, I will have to learn this method and try to make it work for my body, since I have so many too short obi! Thank you Billy!!! 💕

    • @BillyMatsunaga
      @BillyMatsunaga  5 лет назад

      Oh wow, a short back... That's a problem I have never thought about. Could it be that your makura is one of the big ones? Because I noticed that there are a lot different shapes and sizes differing from producer to producer. However, I really hope that you get used to how put this makura on!

    • @annireetta
      @annireetta 5 лет назад +1

      @@BillyMatsunaga Well I have a few different makuras, one is slightly bigger and the one I always use is the smallest I have found. But I really do have a short back - if I sit in onsen on my bum, I get drowned since the water comes up to my nose, so I always sit in seiza in onsen... 😅 Short back is a problem most people don't realise - I'm not THAT short (or thin) otherwise (166cm) so most western clothes don't fit me either if they are fitted... 😥 I suppose I should wear obi a bit lower since I'm not young any more, but there is only one place the obi sits at, so can't follow that rule, either! 😄

    Not only kimono but also obi can be too short? This is so difficult. 😭 Why are especially vintage obi too short? Did they use a different binding style than today?

    Yet another time I've come to express admiration for one of your videos. I'm wondering -- you're very thin, and there are obi that are too small for you?? My waist is about 45", and I am not sure I'll ever be able to buy an obi that will work for me, even with a sugata makura. Is there a way, a place to get obi and other komono that will be able to encompass me correctly, or should I just learn to make my own?

    Have you ever used an obi-clip (azumasugata.co.jp/tomeganegu.html)? If so, I would love to see a video on how to use this tool with a nagoya obi. I sometimes have issues with getting the tesaki to look right, so perhaps I'm missing a step somewhere.

    Halo Billy🌸 I wonder if there is any specific function for that gauze? If i am using a normal obi makura with ties, is it necessary to add gauze again?
