- CEFIPRA-FUNDED JOINT INDO-FRENCH WORKSHOP
Title of the Workshop: State of the Art Techniques in River Corridor Research and Management: An Indo French Perspective
Speaker: Prof. Alain Crave, CNRS Géosciences Rennes
Date: 04- 05 July 2024
Venue: IIT Delhi
About the workshop: Rivers are lifeline to the mankind providing essential services at every stage. A natural river system is a complex network of interdependent processes operating for sustainable balance of river ecosystem. Anthropogenic activities, climate change, fluvial disasters and subsequent changes to river flow and sediment regimes have significant impact on hydro-fluvio-ecological functioning of river system. River regulation, excessive sand mining, encroachments and loss of vegetation cover strongly influence the detrimental effects of natural disasters such as floods, bank erosion and morphological dynamics. These changes as local and reach scale alters the flow, sediment, nutrient balance, water quality, aquatic life and other river ecosystem services. The river corridor activities including inland navigation, hydropower generation, river interventions and tourism are also important to develop with a minimal environmental impact and a thorough understanding is required for preparation of river corridor development guidelines. This seminar aims to bring together team of river scientists, engineers, geomorphologist and river ecologists of India and France to identify the issues and challenges in managing the river systems and at the same time existing practices followed and future research needs in this area.
This Workshop is supported by the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR/CEFIPRA), a bilateral organization set up by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India, and the Ministry for Europe & Foreign Affairs, Government of France to enhance international collaborative research in the field of Science &Technology.
