You did so well on this review man. You really got down to the details that I wanted to know and even explained tons about the mix amp. Thank you! You have a new sub.
Excellent review, many important points stated eg padding on headband didn't increase head temperature. Pity that a comparison between the new version and old wasn't included.
I've had the same pair of A40s since 2009. Nearly ripped the jack in half and it still works fine. Anybody who is put off by the price shouldn't be, take good care of them and they'll last.
hey just wanted to say this was a really good review, covered everything that i should need to know and more, also i am looking into buying this type of headset so thanks for the info.
Astro is by far and hands down the absolute best possible headset you could buy for your gaming needs. Don't let the plastic fool you, they are built like tanks and have above average functionality for a gaming headset. Excellent quality, excellent support, it is absolutely unreal and if you want the best you need Astro.
Wow, fantastic review Briar! Love your Destiny content as well! I have the xbox1 version of the a40's and it is a good headset but with the advent of the xbox elite controller with the 3.5mm audio jack I was thinking about getting this headset. I know it isn't a deal breaker but the ability to play music through the headset is awesome.
Great review! I tested out the A50s first, and ended up liking the A40s much more because of the mixamp. If wires aren't an issue, you HAVE to go A40s.
Hey man just want to say thanks for the fantastic reviews! I am getting a ps4 this holiday season and obviously and great headset should come with it right? You are definitely helping me make some hard decisions! Keep up the good work man
Dude not to be offensive or anything but you would make the perfect Santa Claus when your hair turns grey! Also great review, I'm thinking about picking these up.
I previously had Turtle Beach X41s, my first headset which i purchased over seven years ago and still work today. I decided itt was time for an upgrade so i went with the Xbox one Astro A40s for $200. To be honest, I was a little let down. Sound quality was decent, a bit better than my X41s, but wasnt amazing. I constantly have to adjust game volume and chat volume in game to here players. I primarily play Halo 3, and although I am aware that headsets dont help much in H3, these seem to almost help less than my X41s. I plan to take these back and buy Turtle Beach X-0 7 pros, as it has an automatic chat volume adjuster, and has the super human hearing mode which I hope will help i H3 more than astros
Solid Review!!, I currently have the Razer Kraken (Green color $65 bucks) and its ok but not great. I can't hear myself talking thru the headset, so I have to keep one side off my ear to hear how loud I am talking which is very annoying. I'll tell you a little about my current setup: wires running from the PS4, Elgato HD60 and the PC in order to record gameplay and audio. I'm not sure if my jury rig setup has anything to do with not hearing myself (I dont think so), but I am leaning towards the A40s and hoping I don't run into the same problem.
Would the same pair fit both the xbox1 and ps4? Just needing a chat adapter for xbox? Also briar a40, a50 which would u say is better for hearing footsteps in call of duty?
I know I'm not briar but I'll answer your question anyways. To make the astro a40's work on the Xbox one you will need the Xbox one chat adapter (sold separately for $20-$25) and a double ended 2.5mm cable to plug into both the astro a40 and into the chat adapter. From there you plug the chat adapter into your controller and your ready to go, of course you'll need to wire it up to your Xbox one but that's pretty much all you need to do. For hearing footsteps I would definitely recommend the astro a40, all the pros use the astro a40 simply because it is A. Wired meaning no delay in the sound and B. The mixamp pro is such a huge advantage with its virtual 7.1 surround sound it's great for hearing footsteps. Hope I answered your question :)
I found the a40s to have better sound direction. I could tell where shots were coming from much quicker with the a40s. Heard footsteps more often. However I ran into a problem with it's mic. No one can hear me when I'm in party (PS4).
So I have a microphone with a seperate audio out port for live monitoring that i wanted to plug into the mp3 port in the mixamp. So I was wondering if you knew if there is any noticable latency when the "mp3" input is mixed with that coming from my PC via the USB cable :) I cant really use the monitoring port unless I still experience it as live.
I have the astro a40 2014 edition and doesn't seem to worth the upgrade for me. Is there any real changes from the last years edition? I use the blue yeti myself and I find if I lower the gain that it doesn't pick up background noise either.
I can't seem to get my mic to work with the a40s after the firmware update. The only time my buddy could hear is if I had the mic cable part way in. Bad headset?
I've been considering this as a solution with surround sound and voice chat that works on Xboxone and PC. The £200 price tag it goes for here is a bit steep though, are there any cheaper, but still good surround headsets that still have all their functionality on xboxone, pc and maybe a few other platforms for a little cheaper?
Does 2013-2014 edition a40s work perfectly with the ps4 and Xbox one? Or is it not fully useable for next ( like sound differences and chat and game volume separation )
Briar, not much of a question to do with this video (which is great by the way) but how do you clean your PS4? Do you just dust the side? Use some spray or something? Always worried that a lot of dust will get into my system
Will the A40 +Mixamp Pro also be compatible with the new xbox one Elite controller? (It has a 3.5mm headphone jack). I don't want to buy that A40 +XBoxOne Mixamp crap.
Would you think the attached mic would be acceptable to upload videos to RUclips temporarily? I just don't have the money at the moment, but I plan on getting an AT2020 USB mic sometime this summer.
Whorax Yes. Start making videos. Get used to recording your thoughts and start to find your niche. As your skill improves, and you decide to stick with it, start adding in better equipment. But to begin with, just roll with what you got!
A problem I've always had with headsets that swivel is either the pin that the ear pieces swivel on or the head band breaks. That is the issue I currently see with this brand is the plastic head band. It looks like it is barely holding the ear pieces on. I had turtle beach and in 2 years I went through 4 headsets. They were always willing to replace them but I simply got tired of calling them every 4 - 6 months. I don't know if that is a random instance with consistently getting bad sets but I have been told a lot since then not to get turtle beach anymore. My current headset is the afterglow universal wired headset because they were cheap at the time and I doubt I will be able to break this one all to easy. I will be keeping them as a back up pair. I am looking to get a better headset and I am currently eyeing the afterglow AG9. They look good at a decent price because I can't bring myself to spend $250 +\- for the astro a50 with what appears to be such a structural flaw in them.
Hey could u link a website where I can find the 2015 version or is it just the one still on their website cause their website doesnt look like this one
Hey Briar, do you have any issues hearing in which direction people are shooting, walking, hearing footsteps, etc with either the 2013/2014 A40's and the 2013/2014 A50's?
Hey briar, can u please review this headset called the turtle beach sentinel prestiege headset, 'm thinking of getting it but there are no videos of it on youtube
I currently am using Turtle Beach X12's for normal gaming, music, streaming, and creating RUclips videos. It recently decided to die out as far as sound goes, mic is fine. Would you recommend the A40s over the X12s? And if so, why? I would like to get this replaced ASAP as I have no other speakers, and I just want to hear your opinion. Thanks!
The speaker quality of the astros along with the mix amp are worlds above the x12s but the mic quality isnt as great. The mic quality of the x12s is actually very good for its price point
question for the people that have this i have last the model and the one thing i didnt like about it is that the stream port made an annoying buzzing sound does the 2015 edition fix that?
Nope, I got the Gen 2 A40 to test it out. Still has the hum. Other than looks and using a micro USB instead of mini USB on the MixAmp and Astro claiming the material quality was increased, they are exactly the same.
bro how is it compare to Kingston HyperX Cloud in terms of quality of the sound ?! im playing BF4 so it's important for me to have a good directional sound that Hyper doesn't have surround, i know this one is more expensive, but i really heard good staff about HyperX ? what you suggest ?!
Super Dope I will check into this. I think they are essentially the same as these, but come with a Astro chat adpter instead of the Mixamp. That chat adapter means that the headset will only have stereo sound.
Hello Rabbit, I am in the market for a wireless gaming headset. I seen a few of your vids. just wanna get your opinion on it. kinda torn bet. turtle beach stealth 400 & the Astro A50 & A40 ??? Can you help ???
Hey, I just got the new Astro A40s for Christmas but my friends were saying that the mic quality sounds very bad for them and that I sounded better with the default ps4 earbud thing! Any advice? Should I return them or is this an easy fix situation. Thanks
+ObtainFilms there is no point in getting it without a mixamp tbh... without the mixamp it isjust stereo sound. the reason i got it was because of the 7.1 (and the all in one audio stream out)... way more expensive, but you might as well buy turtlebeache px22's rather than the a40 without amp...
PLEASE HELP Im thinking of buying the a40 for my pc, and my soundcard has these specs: AUDIO OUTPUT Form Factor integrated Sound Output Mode 7.1 channel surround Compliant Standards High Definition Audio Is it necesarry to buy the mixamp for the best sound/bass ?? Or will my soundcard do the same job ? THANKS
I am interested in purchasing these but I am curious, do you NEED the mix amp to get surround sound. Does it sound noticeably better with the mix amp. I would like to save 100 dollars on the mix amp if I don't need it for the best experience.
I am pretty sure you do for surround sound because I have it with the mix amp and its surround sound but when I just go from headset to adapter it is not as good of sound so I am pretty sure but that is Xbox one for me idk what console your talking about .
Mad respect for your headset reviews man. Very detailed, concise and honest reviews.
Always go to you when I'm looking unbiased reviews. Keep up the decent videos bro!!
Ive seen alot of reviews, this one gave the most in depth information thanks man really enjoyed this video!
Thanks for the review. I'm trying to decide between these and the new TB Elite 800s, and this is the only really well done review I've found so far.
This has to be the best review of anything on YT. Wow, just.. Thx.
You did so well on this review man. You really got down to the details that I wanted to know and even explained tons about the mix amp. Thank you! You have a new sub.
Has anyone told you that you look like Jack from Achievement Hunter? A skinner one at that and you got the style of beard as him too.
Best review i've seen for this headset. Great Job!
This video convinced me to buy this headset. I'm now subscribed. Thanks!
You always give the best reviews man i mean it
Just got my pair of astro a40's today thanks alot for all the information
awesome and thorough review man. well done
great review. I don't normally comment on reviews but this was very very well done :) thanks
Hey Briar can we get a setup video. I really enjoy your content

Thanks for the review, picking one up today!
P.s Love the TARDIS in the background ;D
Hey man just want to say thanks for the fantastic reviews! I am getting a ps4 this holiday season and obviously and great headset should come with it right? You are definitely helping me make some hard decisions! Keep up the good work man
Nice review was thinking
About getting these and this vid gave me full details
Dude not to be offensive or anything but you would make the perfect Santa Claus when your hair turns grey! Also great review, I'm thinking about picking these up.
Brilliant Video Bro!

on 3:58 , does the left jack fits in the 3.5 mm jack ?
Hey, briar rabbit i bought my white astro A40 at best buy about 5 months ago do you know if i can trade them in for the astro 2015 A40?
***** Doubt it. Wouldn't worry about it though. Most of the changes are purely cosmetic.
+Briar Rabbit (Daily Destiny Videos) what do I need for this to run on Xbox one ???
+MONEY MIKE xb1 adapter. that is what I use. And I brought the black tr headset.
+Briar Rabbit (Daily Destiny Videos) and sound quality

Also I see Amazon has this headset currently for 224.99
great review really changed my opinions thanks bro :)
Would the same pair fit both the xbox1 and ps4? Just needing a chat adapter for xbox?

I know I'm not briar but I'll answer your question anyways. Like your Astro A50 review really great. If you compare them both soundwise, wich would you choose? Is there any difference?
I found the a40s to have better sound direction. I could tell where shots were coming from much quicker with the a40s. Heard footsteps more often. However I ran into a problem with it's mic. No one can hear me when I'm in party (PS4).
IGotEyesOn
the footsteps thing could be setting you had your a50 on, did you try changing those around?
Do these work with the xbox one? Would I have to order them for xbox 360 since the ps4 version doesn't come with a cable that we need apparently?
So I have a microphone with a seperate audio out port for live monitoring that i wanted to plug into the mp3 port in the mixamp. So I was wondering if you knew if there is any noticable latency when the "mp3" input is mixed with that coming from my PC via the USB cable :) I cant really use the monitoring port unless I still experience it as live.
Briar another great review and vid! I have one question can I plug the headphones directly to my phone?
I have the astro a40 2014 edition and doesn't seem to worth the upgrade for me. Is there any real changes from the last years edition? I use the blue yeti myself and I find if I lower the gain that it doesn't pick up background noise either.
Is not worth the upgrade I got the 2014 atros a40 for 75$ new
Gregory ChinI wouldn't upgrade.
Where did you get you're for $75?!
Where did you get them for $75???
victor ramirez craigslist but i think the guy who sold them to me he stole the headset from somewhere
Hey Briar Rabbit, have you done a review for the ASTRO A40 TR yet?
Very interested in what you have to say.
I can't seem to get my mic to work with the a40s after the firmware update. The only time my buddy could hear is if I had the mic cable part way in. Bad headset?
Except the new look, is there any other difference between the gen1 and gen2 astro a40 and mix amp pros ?
Do you use the optical cable for PC as well ?
Also i have the Logitech G35 at the moment. Do you think it is worth it?
I've been considering this as a solution with surround sound and voice chat that works on Xboxone and PC. The £200 price tag it goes for here is a bit steep though, are there any cheaper, but still good surround headsets that still have all their functionality on xboxone, pc and maybe a few other platforms for a little cheaper?
Plantronics rig is good but not sure if it works on X1
No worries, took the plunge and bought the Astro set in the end. A bit steep, but so far I'm not regretting it.
Well wherever your getting it from us overpriced because you can get Astro a50s with mixamp for £200
Lee are they still good ?
Is it necessary the mixamp for pc's if my pc already has a dolby audio card?
Thanks for the vid!😄 btw are you in a hot room you looked on fire😅
Hey briar I'm trying to choose between getting the stealth 500X or the astro a50s.are you going to do a review on the stealth 500X at any point ?
Nice vid dude help out a lot 👍👍
I just got these there AMAZING!
I have 4 year old Astro a40's and haven't had problem with them. Kinda want to update for the 7.1, but don't know if its worth it.
Does 2013-2014 edition a40s work perfectly with the ps4 and Xbox one? Or is it not fully useable for next ( like sound differences and chat and game volume separation )
I am thinking about getting a pair of Astro A40 can I use the headset for game audio and a blue yeti mic for PSN parties?
Will you do a reviw for the siberia elite prism? just asking ^^
Does the 2015 mixamp have any hissing noise like the older one?
Are they coming out with a black? I'm not too keen on the grey
will this work with a xbox one since they came out with the new 3.5mm jack on the controllers?
Briar, not much of a question to do with this video (which is great by the way) but how do you clean your PS4? Do you just dust the side? Use some spray or something? Always worried that a lot of dust will get into my system
Just use cannef air or a compressor.
I really enjoy your reviews! Do you think you could review the turtle beach ear force stealth 450p? Thanks!
Could you do a unboxing and review of the Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Sentinel Task Force Turtle Beach headset?
Hey, when will you do Astro a40 tr unboxing and review?? Do it soon!!
The mic is actually really good if u plug the headset directly into ur pc. It's the mixamp that fucks it up.
I loved this review now i realy now how to USE a mix amp❤️
Yo my question is The sound of the new gen Astro improved from 2015, with The mixamp or still The same
How can you tell which preset is which? I just got the new mixamp and theres no labeling anywhere. Thanks
Please make a video how to set up your mp3 and also hear game sound please !
Will the A40 +Mixamp Pro also be compatible with the new xbox one Elite controller? (It has a 3.5mm headphone jack). I don't want to buy that A40 +XBoxOne Mixamp crap.
Are you going to review the Astro a40 with M80 mix amp for xbox one?
Would you think the attached mic would be acceptable to upload videos to RUclips temporarily? I just don't have the money at the moment, but I plan on getting an AT2020 USB mic sometime this summer.
Whorax Yes. Start making videos. Get used to recording your thoughts and start to find your niche. As your skill improves, and you decide to stick with it, start adding in better equipment. But to begin with, just roll with what you got!
***** I have a 2035. I like it.
For the same price you can get the better Blue Yeti
+Unsearchable nah I'd rather have 2035
Briar Rabbit What mic do you use to record?

DraconisElibane turtle beaches are bad if you get the cheap ones, but if you're willing to pay more you'll get a good headset
*****
Thanks.
***** is that supposed to be good? try 2.40
Brair I wanna buy this headset for my xbox one and also use it with my pc, do u know if the sorround sound will work on my pc??
Hey briar, can u please review this headset called the turtle beach sentinel prestiege headset, 'm thinking of getting it but there are no videos of it on youtube
amazing review.... now i have wonder a50 have better surrunding sound than a40 ?!!!
Tbh yes way better a50 but what sucks is the battery
I have a Siberia v2 by steelseries and I want to use this mixamp for it, what do I need to make it work properly for Xbox one?
I currently am using Turtle Beach X12's for normal gaming, music, streaming, and creating RUclips videos. It recently decided to die out as far as sound goes, mic is fine. Would you recommend the A40s over the X12s? And if so, why? I would like to get this replaced ASAP as I have no other speakers, and I just want to hear your opinion. Thanks!

question for the people that have this i have last the model and the one thing i didnt like about it is that the stream port made an annoying buzzing sound does the 2015 edition fix that?
Nope, I got the Gen 2 A40 to test it out. Still has the hum. Other than looks and using a micro USB instead of mini USB on the MixAmp and Astro claiming the material quality was increased, they are exactly the same.
If you buy a40s for pc can you use them for a console such as a ps4
Yes
:)
+George Boruga no you dont
+erwin Rommel Just need a chat adapter with original gamepad. Newer gamepads have a 3.5mm jack just like the PS4
bro how is it compare to Kingston HyperX Cloud in terms of quality of the sound ?! im playing BF4 so it's important for me to have a good directional sound that Hyper doesn't have surround, i know this one is more expensive, but i really heard good staff about HyperX ? what you suggest ?!
With the headset if you want the best mic quality just hook the headset up to your controller/PC, then plug your preferred mic into your headset.
OK I want a40 w/ mixamp but I have Xbox 360 and Xbox one and phone will it work on all 3 or do I have to buy separate ones
If you buy the headset adapter for Xb1 can these work with the XB1
Briar, Could you please do a review of the Xbox One Edition Astros if possible, if it's not that's okay I would just really like to see it
Super Dope I will check into this. I think they are essentially the same as these, but come with a Astro chat adpter instead of the Mixamp. That chat adapter means that the headset will only have stereo sound.
You can use these on the Xbox one
Hey briar, what do you actually do with all those headsets after the reviews????
Target practice?
Could you give us the link please? Or where did you buy it from? Amazon?
Hello Rabbit, I am in the market for a wireless gaming headset. I seen a few of your vids. just wanna get your opinion on it. kinda torn bet. turtle beach stealth 400 & the Astro A50 & A40 ??? Can you help ???
Do these now work on the Xbox One with the chat adapter?
how long is the cord to the astro a40 tr headset?
What headset +mic is recommended to start a gaming/RUclips career?
Will these work with the new Xbox one 3.5mm jack on the controller plz respond I wanna get these
Yes
It’s work on xbox one?
Are these things connecting Earcup to Headband Metal?
Nice Swisstool Spirit. My favorite MT.
Which sound quality is better? The Astro A40 quality or the Audio Technica M50x ?
Hey,
I just got the new Astro A40s for Christmas but my friends were saying that the mic quality sounds very bad for them and that I sounded better with the default ps4 earbud thing! Any advice? Should I return them or is this an easy fix situation.
Thanks
Exact reason why I returned mine. How Astro can charge £200 for a headset and put such a shitty mic on it its just embarassing.
That's why most people use other sources to chat because Astros sound quality isn't the best through the console itself
Two questions? Is the mic quality good for Pc and do you think the price during black friday will go down on the main online store?
***** Thanks.
+Xectromorph Yeah I think its probably more efficient to buy it without the mix amp.
PLEASE HELP
Im thinking of buying the a40 for my pc, and my soundcard has these specs:
AUDIO OUTPUT
Form Factor integrated
Sound Output Mode 7.1 channel surround
Compliant Standards High Definition Audio
Is it necesarry to buy the mixamp for the best sound/bass ?? Or will my soundcard do the same job ? THANKS
+Xectromorph Thanks! Was really hard to find any info online. Since the mixamp is pretty expensive i dont think im gonna buy it only for surround xD
Omg can't wait to get my pair :)
Could some1 please reply with the link to this since its not in the description please, the astro website is way to hard to use on mobile device's thx
Void Razer For PC, I notice on their website when I click on PC it comes without the MixAMP but for consoles it comes with it.
i got a pear a few days ago with mix amp and it works with pc so you should be fine Tyler Adams
can i use the 2014 ones also with xbox one? i want surround sound so dont want the xbox one version of the a40.
You'll have to get a chat adapter, 20$ that's like 12-17 pounds. Idek
Very good review.
Is there any difference between this and the 2013 edition?
