The drum arrangement on this live version is just absolute perfection. It's just so good.. It's like there is a form of musical telepathy between him and Joe.
The drummer is Jeff Campitelli and he’s an absolute master of his craft , I had the pleasure of sitting down with him on a few occasions for drumming tips and advice. Not only is he a total professional but one of the nicest damn people in the business - and holy crap can he play , I’ve sat there dumb founded shaking my head in amazement of his skills, then he’s completely down to earth.
This alien surfer brings us the best of, extreme talent, accuracy, precision, harmony, etc, too much too list. A true champion at his art. Thanks Joe Satriani for your talent's that are beyond this reality.
i love joe, but c'mon there are lots of other great guitarists who tell stories with notes. allan holdsworth, jeff beck, tommy emmanuael,, segovia, van halen, and so on. joe is also a teacher, he'd tell you the same..
Try with all your heart to reach Heaven! I will help you if you follow my rules, which are the only rules of life. This is what God said, and He has kept His promise. What about you?
you can do that before you die. in this life. joe is great, but what he does is not magic. nor a miracle. it's the result of work. and he's a teacher, so he would agree with what i am saying one hundred percent. if you really wanna play like this, you can. otherwise, you're just opining.
@@AlexDiesTrying half an hour a day for a year or two will get you to joe's level. he'd be the first to tell you that, being a teacher of other great guitar players.
The entire album did that for me. At the time I discovered Surfing was at a time I was reading Martian Chronicles, and the two worked together very well.
Yeah he is playing exactly in tune and in sync with the music. Compliments Joe's playing perfectly. Incredible! I wish he still played with Joe, the new drummer he has seems like the guy is just there to fill the position and get paid in my opinion.

I remember my brother bringing home a taped copy of a copy of a copy of Surfing. I was about 14. We would play board games and listen to it. i always remember loving the 1st half of the album but found the second half really drew me in and took me off to another place. Circles and Lords of Karma really fueled my imagination. After that I bought all his albums on tape and would scrutinize every tiny photo, read all the liner notes and just wonder about the world of Satch. Back in 1993 we were so distanced here in Australia. When he came out here and toured for the 1st time in the early 2000s I said i could die happy. i got to meet him get my guitar signed and shake his hand (mind blown. Also THE nicest guy in music). He has since toured about 5 times more and each time I am amazed! My point being that I love the fact that you can now see a performance that he has done days if not hours after he has played it. It's amazing that we can just log on and watch this stuff for free!! (I wore my Satch Tapes VCR out long ago). We live in an awesome age where we can see some amazing talent perform even though we are scattered across the globe. I'll never reach SATCHuration point! Long live Satch! (gets off soapbox, picks up walking frame and shuffles off shouting "kids of today have no idea how good they've got it!")
Damo Bozo Damo Bozo yeah ditto... you are right it is amazing that we have access to this music as we do, it's such a privilege... Satch a privilege😏...(I wonder how long it will last before it all may possibly come crashing down, well we had better make use of it perhaps while we can, make hay while the sun shines so to speak.) I have been just chasing up my brother for the CD...that he, that he stole... borrowed, from me, so I can somehow perhaps learn to play, Circles, soundly live, from the CD I borrowed/forgot to give back to my guitarist friend Dan, who was absolutely awesome at guitar, who probably never forgave me/is deeply psychologically scarred by my forgetfulness. Although perhaps if I learned to play it, put it out there in the real world as a performance, he may forgive me, as Lords of karma we would see this moving in righteous Circles, & we'll be Flying...😎
For me it was a mate brought round a copy of the surfing album and played it for me after school on his walkman. I have never heard of the guy at the time and listened to crushing day. was the most amazing thing I ever heard. I was 17. been hooked ever since. seeing him live for the first time in 1 and a half weeks. got VIP so I get to meet him backstage too.
Hell, yeah, dude. I played my cassette tape of it that one summer 'til I practically wore it out. I had vivid images in my mind that went with each song. Such a killer album to this day. Satch is the man!
Amazing. The tightness amongst the members is out of this world. It takes a helluva drummer to be able to keep up with all of the nuances to play in a Satch song and Jeff is as good as they get. Well done.
What's amazing to me is how Joe remembers these songs well enough to blaze through them live. I know he improvs a little bit - because it's impossible to remember EXACTLY as it was recorded and play 18 other songs the same way, but he never seems to mess up. I met him one time after a show .... trying to think of the most sincere compliment I could give him for all the great music he has supplied over time in my life , I simply told him he defined and literally embodied what an "ARTIST" truly is, to me. He seemed to really appreciate that.
Joe's intro's are so epic, they entice the Listener to get so hypnotized into the soul of the song. The main reason I still play guitar today is because of this man.
The drummer is Jeff Campitelli and the bassist, Stu Hamm. I saw them perform at House of Blues Chicago and they were awsome. I could see Joe playing at six feet from me. Won't ever forget that show.
Can we just take a second to talk about how perfect Jeff Campitelli's drumming is in Joe's Music? I would love to see him tour with this whole line up again!!
OH GOD ! HOLLY PHUCK, {the arrangements in that song, abstract, up and down, melodious, hard, soft, phuc me, rockin, u name it] what a song, what a performance .
When this DVD came out, it changed my life. I was on my last year in middle school. Months later my Dad took me to my first ever concert. The G3 tour 2006 with Satriani, Petrucci & Johnson. Another life changing event for me. Life has been interesting, good and bad, but this music has been with me always. (:
What I like about Satriani, from all appearances, is that it's about sharing the music; creating an experience. Too many artists are about "Look at me. I'm a genius."
When I heard this song for first time I didn't know the name. Just listened and I swear that I imagined circles all perfects and nice geometric shapes. How is that a song can make u imagine just the circles. Amazing
Wow! This song is like a huge roller coaster. You go along to the beginning and watch the scenery up in the air that is a beautiful sight. Then, you make it to the top and go over the 200 foot peak. Joe hits the solo, you go over the edge, and loose your stomach for like 2 minutes! Awesome! Joe, you da man!
Playing alongside Dave Larue is a huge baking! You never feel alone for he fills out space so brilliantly! One of the best bassist of all time! Respect Mr Larue😎
I don't remember the exact year but I saw Joe play with Stu Hamm in a very small venue. I was a huge fan and part of the show he played stuff from a new album he had coming out that would be Flying in a Blue Dream. What a way to get introduced to new material, never has it happened again with any band/musician for me.
This man is Incredibly talented, why it has taken me all these years to find him is my loss. Perfect pitch, transfers, tones etc etc etc, Absolutely amazing and at a lose of words. His band mates are truly professionals at the same token. Not may people can pull off an entire show instrumental in rock music, pure Ear Porn.
Russell, Depending on your age it often takes time to either find or get turned on to such talents even if they have been around for a long time , i say better late than never & Joe will not disappoint you whatever you hear.
I think this is my favourite all time live guitar performance... The blues thrown into harmonic minors, diminished, enigmatic.. the most aggressive darkest thing I have ever heard him play backed by phenomenal drums and bass. I love how it turns into the heaviest of Ork music. Much as I love circles the semi impro after it has me buzzing...
This particular live version holds all the reasons why I love Satriani. 5 songs in one!! Reminds me of "Not of this Earth" sound. Wish he toured more with Dave LaRue.
Have been listening to Joe since Big Bad Moon aired on Much Music(Canadas version of MTV. Always loved his music, but found it’s even better after smoking a joint!!
Love how The Maestro Joe Satriani jams on these tunes and then just blows our minds with such passion and melodies to die for!! The opening chords and progression leading up to the explosion of soloing mayhem!! Hendrix inspired playing and the control!! Listen to the end guys you will NOT be disappointed ❤️ WOW!! Thank You Joe and Rock On 🎸🤘😎
I had the privilege of seeing Joe Satriani at a small theater in Davenport Iowa back in like 1988 or 1989 I think it was? He was touring in support of Surfing With the Alien. To this day, that was hands down the best concert musically that I have ever been to! It was very bizarre for that time, but in a very positive way, to go to a live concert and see everyone quietly and attentively just watching the show for the main purpose of respectfully listening to a musician do what he does. I went to many concerts back in those days and that was the only time I had ever witnessed anything like that, and it definitely left a lasting impression. I was lucky enough to be in the front row, and it was truly amazing! so glad that Mr. Satriani is still out there doing it!!!!!😆 Thanks for inspiring me to learn to play guitar!
Insane talent and master of his craft , can play so many different styles. So giving of advice and sharing of the drums. And probably on of the nicest people you’ll ever meet
I got an A in music GSCE playing this for my performance piece! Thanks Joe!(Credit to my guitar teacher at school for being awesome!Back then i didnt truely realize your awesomeness as I was only little back in 1997)

@Angelina Milosevic but it is meant to be focusing on the main musician, Joe satriani, and they could've at least cut it on some of the none interesting guitar parts and shown the whole solo
@Luka Milosevic nowadays with all the internets and such it is easy to critcise editing and mixing and all that stuff... This is when I went out & bought my Ibanez 540R Custom ... still have it 30 some years later ... lite / powerful / easy to play !!! Stays in tune no matter what ... Satch #1 always
My uncle Glenn showed me Joe & Steve 20 years ago and I'm still blown away hearing the skill from these humans just amazing also most of these comments describe Satriani so cool everyone thanks for vibing our Rock N Roll Icons... 🤘😎🤘❤
Can't believe this came out before my Daughter was born, my Baby Girl turns 33 this year and I've loved and played this song ever since it came out " LOVE IT" Love your work Joe, hurry up and bring it Down Under ✌
Great performance right there. Excellent version of Circles with some Enigmatic sprinkled in the jamming at the end. I really like the way he started Circles in particular. That opening melody was fantastic.
Thank you for pointing out that it was "the Enigmatic" - knew it was off Not of this Earth, but couldn't figure out which one. This is in my top five Satch jams.
Freedom living, hairy armed, Italian American, despair destroying, guitar shredding hope elevating Joe !!!!!

An absolute gem. I grew up learning guitar and idolizing the maestro and he has yet to disappoint me. This entire band melds beautifully together.

You have to close your eyes to really get Joe's music.
It takes you to places only he knows the way!
The flow of this is just amazing!!! Changes from one tempo to another seamlessly!! ❤️
He is the MAN......
This might be the best improvised outro ever, the band follows Joe. Great.
OMG, it does sound better than on the album. Much better.
and as an extended version with all of these progressions towards the end!
My favourite Joe Satch tune of all time ...This one really sends my imagination wild and to the Cosmos and back!
Holy Sh!t..Just Holy Sh!it..That explosion at 1.28...I have heard a lot of virtuso obscurity's..Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, etc..This just gets right up there as ultra elite guitar playing..Bravo Joe!
This is when I went out & bought my Ibanez 540R Custom ... still have it 30 some years later ... lite / powerful / easy to play !!! Stays in tune no matter what ... Satch #1 always
Everyone wants a drummer like mr Campitelli and bassist like mr Larue, what a set!!! A kind of dream
just an astonishing version live and that base ..base chords .. super
I was 2nd row at the Palace in Albany, NY for this legendary Satch tour. Thanks for sharing. Truly awesome. Satch is the KING!!!

Love Joe's melodicism.
I remember...." Surfing with the Alien". My first from Joe.... 🎉🎉
My uncle Glenn showed me Joe & Steve 20 years ago and I'm still blown away hearing the skill from these humans just amazing also most of these comments describe Satriani so cool everyone thanks for vibing our Rock N Roll Icons...
🤘😎🤘❤
I love this song....but the live performance melted my computer monitor, the solos were so smokin' hot.
I'm amazed at how he remembers so much complicated music. He is not of this Earth.
Hands down for the band!!
Joe Rules!!!! The Enigmatic at the end!!!!
Love this song I think the live version sounds the best.!!!!
Can't believe this came out before my Daughter was born, my Baby Girl turns 33 this year and I've loved and played this song ever since it came out " LOVE IT"
Love your work Joe, hurry up and bring it Down Under ✌
Such a skilled diverse guitarist. I am always in awe when I hear Joe
