Neat little "older" reel. The newest Penn slammer and spin fishers are great reels but I wouldn't mind fishing this reel for light saltwater game. Thanks for the video. Never heard or seen this older version of the reel before.
@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks, Dennis. I did try this because there is a noticeable kink in the wire, but the bail doesn't have any tension; it lines up perfectly when loosened. There is very slight misalignment on the trip side arm, but barely the width of a thin blade. I added some extra oil around the rotor bushings that I didn't add before and it improved the trips from about 1 out of 5, to 4 out of 5. I think I may have to live with it.
Can you please do a video on showing how to remove the line guide mechanism on the PENN 309 level wind!! My idler gear is missing teeth and would rather just remove it and use it as a conventional reel!
I can do one and will add it to my list. The idler gear that is missing teeth is easily replaced by removing the screw. The part is available through MysticParts.com if you want, but I will show how to remove the assembly if that is what you want to do. Thanks you for asking - Dennis

It is Cal's Universal drag grease, but don't rush out to buy it. You can use the Penn grease that you purchased on the drag washers - Best wishes - Dennis
There are 3 parts to the oscillation system. The oscillation gear drive, located on the back of the main gear, the oscillation gear and the crosswind block. You need to inspect all three. If the drive gars is missing teeth or is broken, it will not turn the oscillation gear. If the oscillation gear is broken, it will not move the crosswind block. If the crosswind block is broken, it will not move the shaft up or down. Whichever part is broken, it will need to be replaced. - Check these three things first - Dennis

i have the same reel. but mine has a issue of winding backward while im trying to reel in my line. any suggestions?
It sounds like you have a problem with the anti-reverse clutch. It is likely dirty and would need to be cleaned or replaced - Dennis
Quite likely you got some grease, or too much oil in it.
EVERYTHING ABOUT THOSE PENN REALS IS OF GOOD QUALITY. SOME OTHER REELS ARE VERY DISAPPOINTING WHEN YOU OPEN THEM.
