  • This is how I set lathe tool offsets in LinuxCNC using an electronic edge finder.
The item used is a FOWLER 54-575-600 0.200'' Electronic Edge Finder

This method will also work with Aloris style quick change tool posts.
Fine tuning of the G54 work offsets can be done after facing or turning, especially when using the reference tool. Fine tuning of the other tool offsets can also be done after a cutting operation using the touch-off buttons.
You may notice the tool is scratched. I thought it might be a good idea to turn the chuck manually to get a more reliable contact. It is not. Don't do that!
My machine is a Shoptask 1720 XMTC lathe Mill Combo with a Pewetools Multifix Size A tool post.
I am a hobbyist and maker and sometimes I sell what I make.
