Man IHRA here did have a habit of revisionist history. They said this was the “3rd annual”and the first 2 were in 1970 & 1971. Problem. Track didn’t open until August 1971 and first race was in 1972 and than later switched to the NHRA and hosted regional events. So this is the 2nd annual. Although I would say it’s a different Empire Nationals since it’s been 18 years in between. Other times they did that was the Spring Nationals in Bristol in 1985. Called it the 21st annual when IHRA was established in November 1970 and had first season in 1971 and the Spring Nationals first race was 1965. There was a Spring Nationals in Bristol in 1965 but it was for the NHRA and the event moved after 3 years at Bristol.
